    ✨ 183 & proud ✨

    May 8 in Taiwan ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

    Taipei to Taichung

    Wo soll ich anfangen?

7/11 for the win!!
    8. Ich habe 7h nichts gemacht beim radln. Keine Musik, kein Podcast. Schon sehr gestört oder?

    A forest of ferns

    December 12, 2024 in Taiwan ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

We jumped on the bikes straight away this morning. I was on a tandem bike with mum, I just had to sit back and relax! I did peddle sometimes because it was heaps of fun. We visited caves and one of them was called Black Devil Cave. It was a big cave and we had to really squeeze through it. It was actually a bit scary some parts.
We came across lots of beautiful ferns when we were walking around, dad gets excited when there is nice plants.
The ferns were at Beauty Cave- they should change it to Fern Cave.
We had to ride on the right side of the road - I think mum was nervous some times.
We did ride to an icecream shop but didn't get one because the man said we all had to buy something for at least $100 each. That was a bit annoying so we didn't get one.
We walked around the town area at night but not much was opened. We found a man with a taco stall set up so had some and then of course we ended up at the beef noodle soup shop.
The island is quiet at the moment because it is the middle of winter. It's good not to have heaps of people walking around though.
The coolest thing about the island is the turtles. There are about 800 of them swimming around the island and we certainly saw lots of them.

    Exploring Taichung

    August 21, 2024 in Taiwan ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

After a stress free travel day yesterday (fly from Bangkok to Taipei, then fast train to Taichung, with a hot pot for dinner) we were ready to explore. When we started, the forecast had a 60% chance of thunderstorms, but luckily this never eventuated. Just some gusty wind which kept the temperature reasonable.

First stop was the Confucius Temple. It was a pretty nondescript temple, but quite peaceful inside. Very well maintained, and with a pretty garden and pond filled with fish and turtles.

Taiwan is well known for its bubble tea, and Taichung claims to be the birthplace of bubble tea. So naturally we hunted out the original bubble tea store to sample the goods. We ordered an original bubble tea as well as a jasmine & honey tea. Both were delicious, not too sweet and not overpowering, but with a very flavourful tea taste. The setting was very calm, cool and relaxing, with little water fountains and plants decorating the space. We couldn't help ourselves and also ordered some mochi balls to go with the tea.

Next we made our way to a little street market, which was selling cute handmade goods, such as fabric coffee/tea holders, jewellery, alongside the other usual market wares. It was nice to see that it was mostly handmade goods, and not mass produced junk that you find in so many other markets. Vela was intrigued by the film camera store at the end of the market street, and having never experienced the disposable camera era of the 90s, she purchased one to play around with - hopefully we can find somewhere to develop them once we're back...

We passed a cheesecake ice-cream store called "Pretty Wife Eat Cheese", so naturally had to stop for the pretty wife to get a photo eating cheese. Vela spent the rest of the afternoon checking out some stores in a mall, while Nathan found a quiet corner to sit down and read.

In the evening, we headed back out onto the streets to try out one of the night markets. Full of food, lights, and people, we found plenty of food to feed us both for less than 20nzd. This included deep fried stinky tofu, some barbecued meats (and offal), cheesy corn, deep-fried & flame-grilled chicken, and a green bean milkshake for dessert.

    Yum!

    National Taiwan Museum of Comics

    April 22, 2024 in Taiwan ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

Continuing the theme of today we moved onto the Museum of Comics, although we weren't quite sure what it was from the reviews but looked interesting. I still can't tell you what it was, but can confirm it was interesting!

There was art work, comics, beautiful Japanese style houses, and building destroying banyan trees! So much fun to wander around, albeit confused, for free on a Monday morning.

    Taichung

    March 21 in Taiwan ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Busier town. I didn't like it much here when i stopped the first time. Stopped again on the way to puli later on, and it was better. It really just came down to having a pleasant hostel. The first one was just too un-personal, felt more welcome in the family mart/ 7-11.Read more

    Grant's Flag Tour

    December 15, 2024 in Taiwan ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Our last stop in Taiwan was Taichung and I took over the tour duties. Our first stop was Anime lane, back streets painted with a variety of different murals. This was followed by visiting a nearby local market, Taichung 5th Market which had local produce, butchers and a wide variety of amazing street food and endless 2nd hand clothing stores which is an big thing in Taiwan and also Japan. I think Kate could have spent hours here. It is probably the only shopping that I can get involved in because you don't know what you are going to find, bit of an apparel treasure hunt. From here it was a quick stop off at a massive Banyan Tree, probably the coolest tree I have ever seen before heading to the Taichung Natrual History museum and Science centre. Super impressive and huge museum that is laid out telling the story of evolution. The kids found it fascinating, including laughing about how closely I looked like the evolution of man, Australopithecus. It was also our last opportunity to experience the street food of Taiwan's night markets.Read more

    Ice ice baby! It's COLD

    December 13, 2024 in Taiwan ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

We left our favourite little island early this morning on the ferry. There was only about 10 people on the ferry and we were back to the mainland quickly. We had a bus ride for an hour and then onto a bullet train! It went very fast, nearly 300kms an hour!. I love how fast they go- you look out the window and zoom, it's gone.
Our next place is called Taichung. It's a big city and the hotel is right across from the train station and next to a mega mall!! I am pumped, Grinchy is not so pumped.
Me and brother went to to movies this afternoon by ourselves to see Moana. Going to the movies in Taiwan was pretty similar but they had subtitles in the movie. It was a bit more expensive than Australia too.
We caught a bus to some night markets and found more delicious food to try. I found a curry pork and egg scallion and it tasted like Keens curry- we all loved it. On the way home we went through some Christmas markets and we stopped to make a pendant. We melted some plastic and then stamped the coloured plastic onto a design. I chose a sea turtle to remind me of the great island we were just on. I really enjoyed making my pendant. The lady helping us was kind.
And the weather here is sure different- freezing cold!!!! I have to go buy some more long pants it is so cold. What a shame, means we will need to go shopping tomorrow! Haha Grinch!

    The 2nd coming

    December 13, 2024 in Taiwan ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Today deserves its own post. I am currently in Taichung and had a lady stop walking across the crossing to come back and talk to me, saying I looked looked like Jesus himself. In the end I wasn't sure if she was in disbelief, wanted an autograph or she was waiting for me to turn water into wine. The day started by leaving the island by ferry, followed by bus and bullet train to Taichung. I have found my favourite 7/11, it has a seat right outside on the corner of a busy intersection. Perfect for my hobby of drinking cheap 7/11 Taiwanese rice beer. Travelling with Fern means any Mega Malls are mandatory (see photo ridiculously long escalator) and the kids went to the movie to see Moana 2. The evening finished with another obligatory night market. Special mention...I also bought something! A jumper from an op shop within the Mega mall, best shop ever seen in a Mega mallRead more

    Street art & more

    November 19, 2024 in Taiwan ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

🇬🇧| Maybe we got a little wrong with the size of the breakfast. That omelette was as big as a toilet lid. That mass of energy needed to be transformed to „power“ for the YouBikes for a city tour.
Since we visited George Town in Malaysia last year we began to like street art more and more. Here in Taichung we found some. It’s just a small part of a small alley in that big city.
After riding across the streets for hours we met a few really nice places to see.

    Cycling around Taiwan, Part 2

    November 5, 2024 in Taiwan ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

Today, I made quite some distance. I cycled around 110km, from Hsinchu to Taichung. I am really surprised how well my legs are actually doing. They are not really sore, though I do have some ache in my left buttcheek because of how I mount and dismount the bicycle all the time.
But with the padding I bought yesterday, it was much nicer to sit on the bicycle this time.

The weather is still great! I also got to talk to some people:
The first ones are a couple from the US, also doing the cycling tour, but with e-bikes instead of normal ones. I let them go first when we arrived at the bridge with a narrow pathway, as I didn't want to slow them down. Then I managed to stay right behind them for the next 20 minutes. But I am sure the wind blowing into my back helped a lot.

The second one is funny enough, right after I got chased by some dogs. I saw the dogs just after I turned a corner. They were hidden in the tall grass and started barking and coming at me when I came closer. I booked it really fast and only slowing down after I arrived at junction where cars were passing by. This is where a car stopped and the guy inside asked me if everything is alright. If he noticed that I was stressed out or was just seeing a lonely biker, I didn't know. But I assured him everything was fine (the dogs were not here, so I was fine).

The third one was in the city. At one of the countless red lights, a second biker stopped next to me and greeted me.
"I saw you between Taipei and Hsinchu yesterday", he said.
He was super nice, though now I wonder how much I stand out for him to recognize me between all the other cyclist touring around Taiwan.

Cycling through the city, combined with the dog encounter just outside of the city, was stressing me out a bit. Arriving at my hotel, I sat down for a moment, before taking a loooong shower.

Then I headed out to the night market, ate my dinner and treated myself with some thai milk tea. I deserved it!

And now I will google how to put sport bands on my knees. They started hurting a bit and I want to give them some support.
Depending how well it is going, I am aiming for another 100km tomorrow. Though there is a village that I might stay in if I want to tip out earlier. But it's still going to be 75km.
