  • Kiev by the river

    July 23, 2019 in Ukraine ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

After the wedding we headed back to Kiev for a couple more days to discover the city and spend some time with Sam and Anna. In the first evening suprisingly we ended up at a beach bar by the river - that's not how we imagined Kiev at all. It was chilled and lovely sitting in the sand drinking some vodka. The next days we visited the Motherland monument surrounded by meters tall communist statues and tanks, a Monestary called Kiev Pechersk Lavra. We also went on a boat trip with Sam, Anna and some more vodka and pickles, then we had the best chicken Kiev ever, and some more vodka which lead us to a karaoke bar where Sam and Tom decided to sing the Wannabe - Spice girls song. What a great way to finish off our Europa trip which also means our wedding day is getting closer :)Read more

  • Kiev - Майдан Незалежності

    July 19, 2019 in Ukraine ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

We arrived in Kiev by plane from Riga. Our hostel was right next to Майдан Незалежності, Independence Square, a noisy, busy meeting place full of fountains, bars and street performers.
The Square has also always been a rallying point for protests and demonstrations and was the central point of the 'revolution' in 2014. In fact, while wandering around in the evening, we suddenly noticed a huge group of people with red balloons gathering around a big monunent at the end of the square. Despite being handed a balloon and invited to join in, we didn't manage to find out much about what was going on except that it was something to do with the president.
We ventured a little further from Independence Square to St. Michael's Golden Domed Monastery and St. Sophia's Cathedral and had a good look around at lots of huge Russian style church buildings. Also in that area we did a brilliant Matrix themed escape room, which was the first time we've attempted one just the two of us. We weren't quite at the top of our escaping skills but really enjoyed it and only finished a couple of minutes late.

    Kiev

    September 6, 2018 in Ukraine ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

My lack of preparation for this trip came back to bite me a number of times on this trip, but nothing ultimately stung more than being denied more time in the Ukraine due to my simple oversight of getting a single entry visa. We both loved the time we had in the country, but it feels underdone and begging for more. I was surprised to discover that Ukraine (including Crimea) is the biggest country located entirely within Europe and we barely scratched the surface. Odessa and Kiev surprised and amazed, yet everyone I met told me that neither comes close to the magic of Lviv a city in the west with easy access to the amazing looking Carpathian Mountains. Both places that could have easily been done if I’d simply done my research.

Not that I’m that bitter, the time we had was incredible and soooo ridiculously cheap. In Ukraine, we lived like kings. On balance I have never been anywhere that represents such incredible value for money. We stayed in beautiful accomodation for a pittance and drank the best cocktails and ate the most beautiful and sophisticated meals in stylish bars and restaurants for prices that felt criminal. We never had a bad or even mediocre meal (not counting the power plant canteen at Chernobyl). And the restaurants themselves were just phenomenal too. Trendy joints with fancy brickwork, exposed air ducts, and artistically creative plating. I have been to very few places in the world with such an abundance of chic and stylish restaurants. I am constantly amazed at the exuding coolness of Eastern Europe, and Ukraine may just be the epitome. Dining here while the beautiful people of Ukraine came out to sip a latte’s and cocktails felt worlds away from my preconceived notions of the country skewed by the media reports.

Maybe it was because of the lack of tourists and touts, but we also slipped straight into local mode. We did very little sight seeing, just enjoying the city, markets, cafe’s, bars and restaurants, it was just a lovely place to be. I guess because postings are on my mind, but I kept thinking that those that get posted to Kiev must think they have won the lottery. A beautiful, vibrant, cosmopolitan, clean, green, safe and modern city that has to be one of the heaped things places in the world to live.

Of course, it’s not all roses. Putin is not just at the door, but has crossed the threshold, which, consistent with Newton’s law, has created an equal and opposite reaction in the rise of Ukrainian ultranationalist. I read an article while I was here about the growing violence towards minorities, particularly Romas, and I happened upon a large nationalist demonstration on my final afternoon (which actually explained all the stencils I’d been seeing around the city in the days before). There was a large contingent of police and a complete lack of counter protesters, so the vibe wasn’t overtly hostile so I wandered around the periphery for a bit taking photos, it was only as I was leaving through the adjacent park and came across hundreds of soldiers drawn up in lines waiting for the order to move in that I got a sense that this was an event that could easily have got out of control.

But, that’s that. This will likely be my last trip to Europe for a few years as my professional and personal focus shifts to north Asia, but once again I’ve had an amazing time, come through largely unscathed and with a broader and richer view of the world.

    Kiev

    August 9, 2017 in Ukraine ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

After 4 hours of border control and 11 hours of bus riding I met Dasha, a classmate of mine from Hohenheim, and her Columbian boyfriend Edwin. She showed us the Ukrainian Kiev in a way I'll never forget. Together we discovered places we'd never seen otherwise. Definitely, Kiev is way more than post-soviet buildings and grey concrete and well worth a visit. Thank you Dasha and Edwin!Read more

    Singing... in Kyiv

    May 14, 2017 in Ukraine ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Ukraine is a tough country - in the last few years there has been a revolution, a downed plane and there are ongoing issues with Russian. I clearly didn't do my research or I may have been a little more apprehensive when we landed in KBP - Kiev's international airport, and sought out Vladimir our taxi driver. We were there for the Eurovision song contest 2017. The drive into town was quiet Vald knew little English and I little Ukraine - we smiled and pointed at a few things. First impressions of Kiev were welcoming - though it had dark undertones - I got the feeling if you wanted to pay to have someone bumped off you should have brought them with you. I had Téa with me - my favourite daughter.

Kiev to be pronounced like Keith with a speech impediment - where "th" is "v". yep that easy, was wet and not that welcoming as a city. The hotel was very nice - I think we could have stayed there a lot longer and it is somewhere where I would be very tempted to go back to.

Beer and food in general was cold and cheap - I liked the chicken kiev's - I had 2 and many many more beers. I gave 5 euros to the porter, and I guess that was enough for him to take his family out for a slap up meal with lots more beers if the hotel prices were anything to go by.

    The Eurovision contest was good - some observations on no particular order;
    - very camp
    - nice welcoming crowd, all on good form
    - not many drunk people
    - lots of over excited people
    - lots of Brits and Irish - but a good all round collection of flags
    - the winning song was a bit pants
    - the variety of songs was fabulous
    - the horse and gorilla were the only weird there

We walked a lot. My feet still hurt. We took the Metro out to the exhibition hall for the contest - some 10km. It cost the equivalent of 20p each way.

I've included some photos - last is the best.

    KIYV kann auch schön!

    October 14, 2019 in Ukraine ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Fazit Nadia: „doch nöd so schlimm, trotz Polizeistaat“

    KIYV CITY

    October 13, 2019 in Ukraine ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

    Street Art

    October 8, 2019 in Ukraine ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

I am always looking to find interesting street art in any new country I visit. However, I was shocked to witness exactly how much I discovered on my travels whilst here. Kyiv has a wonderful art scene that demonstrates creativity in its finest form.Read more
