    Tag 2

    August 1, 2024 in England ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Read more

    Jervaulx Abbey

    September 12, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

    North York Dales NP

    September 3, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We visited the North York Dales National Park on our way to the Lake District. First stop: the Brimham Rocks, weird rock formations that Miel couldn't resist climbing (no worries, it wasn't that dangerous). Second stop: Malham, where we climbed a waterfall to enjoy the amazing views of the dramatic gorge of Gordale Scar and the special limestone scenery of Malham Cove. A romantic riverside dinner made this the perfect day 🥰. The next day we were woken at our quiet park4night spot by some cute cows 🐮.Read more

    Harrogate + Ripley

    August 13, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

After flying into London from Frankfurt I ventured up north to visit Harrogate and catch up with guys I played cricket with 11 years ago! Kristy stayed in London with Julia and Stefan whilst I took the 3 hour train up to Harrogate.
I got in about 9:30PM and met up at the pub 🍻 with a few of the guys that I played at Ripley Cricket Club in 2012 ( time flies 😮). Hadn’t seen them in so long but felt so welcome to be back❤️
I am staying with Robbo (a guy who I used to play with) in his motor home because he of house renovations but he and his family were so welcoming. His son is 14 now and was only 3 when I was over last. He was about half my height and is now about double my height 😂

📍 Harrogate- was treated to a full English breakfast on the first morning before I caught up with my friend James who I used to work with at a local pub. Hadn’t seen him in 10 years when he was in Aus so good to catch up with him over a 🍺. He has two kids now and is getting married early next year- seems like a lifetime ago that we were working at the pub and drinking til the early morning 😂 (definitely grown up)!
I checked out the local town after this and as much as somethings have changed- a lot of it was very much the same!

📍 Ripley CC- went down to the local cricket ground where I played and had a net with few of the boys. Definitely blew off some cobwebs after not picking up a cricket bat since March and could be my only training session before returning to my season back home 😂
They have a special game on tomorrow vs Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) so helped out the groundsmen whom I played with get the ground ready. Spent some time on the mower, roller and helped marking up the lines. Loved the afternoon back on the tools ✂️🍃

📍 Ripley Castle- went for a quick walk around the village, castle and the grounds where I worked whilst I was over here. Very nostalgic walking through the grounds of the place where I was worked as a groundskeeper all that time ago!

Loved my little trip up north. Was a real trip down memory lane seeing old friends and the town I lived in for 6 months. Will be back one day- hopefully not another 11 year hiatus 😂

Also was well overdue for my 🐧 debut.
Kudos to KB for doing this the the time (very grateful) 😘

    All Creatures Great and Small

    May 18, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

It’s hard to avoid the whole James Herriot / All Creatures Great and Small connections when you’re deep in the Yorkshire Dales.
But we weren’t really trying to avoid them - in fact we sought them out. We are unashamedly fans of the books as well as the 2 series that arose from those volumes as they portrayed a rural life so different to ours in Australia. Beautiful, rugged, harsh, stark, majestic - the list of adjectives goes on. What we discovered today was all of this and more.

    But first things first.

Indeed our destination today was Grassington in the Yorkshire Dales, but as we were so close to Liverpool after departing Chester, Loss insisted 😉 we take a slight detour to capture a couple of points of interest from the most famous of all Liverpudlians - The Beatles. Two songs were released by the band in February 1967 - Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields and both of these physical landmarks were on the ‘easy’ side of Liverpool so we sought them out.

First stop was ‘Penny Lane’ and we snapped the obligatory photos of some of the landmarks from their childhood - the Barber, The Bank, The shelter behind the roundabout etc. We even took some video with the song playing quite loudly. No one batted an eyelid as I suspect it is an everyday occurrence for the locals.
About 10 minutes away is ‘Strawberry Field’ which was also a childhood haunt, particularly of John. It was a children’s home ‘back in the day’ with large gardens and grounds. It is now a Salvation Army centre and they do a strong trade in Beatles memorabilia.

Although Loss was keen to seek out other places such as their childhood homes etc, I dragged her away from her 60’s nostalgia and we headed for the Yorkshire Dales. The scenery changed quite abruptly after we left Liverpool suburbia behind us and before long we were marvelling at the beauty of the Dales as they started to reveal themselves.

On the way to Grassington, we stopped at Broughton House (Mr’s Pumphrey’s residence) and then arrived in the absolutely gorgeous town of Grassington at midday. It was too early to check in at our accommodation (The Devonshire Hotel / Drovers Arms) so after exploring the town and appreciating its unquestionable beauty we went off for a longish drive through the Dales. The roads are impossibly narrow and winding and progress is slow - but that is a bonus because around each bend lies a new vista of beautiful rolling hills, little streams, bridges, stone fences and buildings dotting the landscape creating an ‘otherworldly’ sensation.
We ended up passing through Askrigg (the Drovers’ Arms and Skeldale house of the original series) and Yockenthwaite (the Alderson’s farm).
We’ve just returned to Grassington, checked in to ‘The Drover’s Arms’ and been assigned room 7 - the Tricki Woo room :)
We’re just hoping that as a result we don’t end up with Tricki’s unfortunate, recurrent affliction😳

Last day in Harrogate - walks and comedy

    September 21, 2024 in England ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

The weather was a bit grey, and we didn’t want another long drive to somewhere that was also grey. So, we decided to walk around town for one last look, do one last shop, and research the route for my trip this evening.

A couple of days ago, I had dropped my expensive computer mouse on the floor, and it then rattled and did some strange things. So I located a shop that sold gaming stuff that advertised a selection of mice, and we went there first. It didn’t sound good at first. The guy behind the counter reckoned that their only Bluetooth mouse was a generic £6 model, so I agreed on that, but when he came back, he had two. The second one was a later version of the one I had dropped and was nearly five times the price of the cheap one - but that’s the one I bought. It’s great.

The ladies shopped ‘til they dropped, and we went back home for lunch. Christine purchased a Gregg’s sausage roll, and I bought another pork pie from the same butcher’s shop I had been in earlier. Yum.

Earlier on our trip, I decided to attend a live show on Saturday in Harrogate. The comedian Jimmy Carr was in town, and I purchased a single ticket as the two ladies said they would be offended by the language and content (I didn’t argue as I knew that to be so true - watch him on YouTube if you don’t believe me). Being a single ticket, I got a seat in row 5 close to centre stage. So after lunch we walked the 11 minutes from our apartment to the Harrogate Convention Centre (the ladies didn’t trust my navigation skills - probably wise). It was an easy walk.

The show started at 7, so I set off just before 6:30, as I didn’t want to walk in late to a standup comedian. The Venue is amazing, with a spiral ramp leading up to the large auditorium (2,000-person capacity). Jimmy did his stuff for nearly two hours straight. He is outstanding, especially when he invited hecklers from the audience to try him on. Fantastic show. I walked back home without being mugged. The two ladies were worried about that.

It was a great end to a great week.

    Fountains Abbey

    August 7, 2024 in England ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

This place was spectacular. The monastery was built in the 1100s and decommissioned in the 1500s by Henry VIII.

On from it are the gorgeous Studley Royal Water Gardens, but no photos as they just don't do them justice.

These two form a world heritage site and we spent a few happy hours there.
