    Day 21–22

    Abenteuerlicher Road-trip

    Heute sind wir das letzte und spannendste Stück der Route gefahren.
    Die Straße war noch mal ein Stück schmaler und es ging steil bergauf. Wir sind eine Strecke gefahren bei der ich mich wirklich gefragt habe wer auf die Idee gekommen ist, da überhaupt eine Straße hoch und wieder runter zu bauen. Es war so steil, kurvig und eng…. Das war, vor allem weil es seit gestern Abend wieder so stürmt und regnet, wirklich sehr abenteuerlich. Mir hat es Spaß gemacht aber ich kann mir vorstellen, dass viele Leute dort einen halben Nervenzusammenbruch bekommen 😄
    Mir sind zwei Motorradfahrer entgegengekommen, die gar nicht richtig fahren konnten wegen des Windes, sie mussten sich mit den Füßen links und rechts immer wieder abstützen und in Schritttempo fahren.
    Es gab einige Warnschilder vor Beginn des Passes, aber sie hatten das Wetter wohl genauso unterschätzt wie ich.
    Auf der anderen Seite des Berges im Tal angekommen war es Zeit für etwas Nervennahrung :) süßes Gebäck können die hier wirklich (Brot leider nicht 😄).
    Eigentlich wollte ich heute auf einen Campingplatz, das dachten sich bei dem Mistwetter aber wohl viele Leute. Deswegen waren die, die ich rausgesucht habe schon voll.
    Ich hatte mir wegen des Wetters heute eh eine sehr lange Autofahrt vorgenommen und hatte dann jetzt doch keinen Bock mehr weiter zu suchen. Deswegen stehen wir jetzt wieder an einem wilden Spot. Sehr schöne Gegend aber raus gehen ist nicht wirklich eine Option 😅
    Ich bin froh dass ich einen Großteil der Strecke heute schon einmal bei gutem Wetter gefahren bin, es sieht zwar alles auch bei diesem Wetter magisch aus, aber die Aussichten die ich auf dem Hinweg hatte möchte ich nicht missen 🥰 lucky me!    Read more

    Isle of Skye - Fort William - Glencoe

    Leaving Isle of Skye today. A summers day in Scotland??!! - wet and cold (a few pics for you Lynne, just in case you're missing it). Thought we would take the 20min ferry from Armadale to Mallaig to save 1hr drive., rough as!!! , the locals said it was a reasonably smooth crossing?!?! (and I was nearly sick)
    Drove through the beautiful town of Fort William and arrived at the village Glencoe where we are staying at a country Lodge. (unfortunately due to the weather it was hard to get pictures that showed the real beauty of these places.

    Day 67

    Refuge de Meanach > Kinlochleven - 15km

    Il nous reste 15km à faire pour atteindre Kinlochleven, alors on se dit que cette journée devrait se passer tranquillement ! Mais bon forcément, elle a eu son lot de surprises...

    Premièrement, pour continuer la trace, il faut passer de l'autre côté d'une rivière. Un pont est indiqué sur les cartes, mais une fois arrivés à destination, il n'y a rien qui ressemble de près ou de loin à un pont. Il faut donc traverser à pied, avec les vélos ! Heureusement le courant n'est pas très fort, et la rivière n'est pas très profonde. Bastien passe les deux vélos et nous nous posons un peu au soleil de l'autre côté, le temps de se réchauffer les pieds glacés par l'eau froide.

    Ensuite, nous prenons la route vers la ville, mais les 15km qu'il reste à faire sont des kilomètres de chemin caillouteux une nouvelle fois... On pousse donc les vélos, en se disant que tout cela est bientôt fini et qu'on sera bien en arrivant au camping pas trop tard.
    C'était sans compter sur Mylène : 3 kilomètres après une pause que nous avons faite dans la matinée au bord du lac Eilde Mor, elle se rend compte qu'elle a oublié son sac banane là-bas... Nous prenons la décision de laisser les vélos et de faire l'aller-retour en trottinant. Mylène, plus rapide, finit par retrouver son sac, et nous voilà repartis dans l'autre sens pour finir ce périple qui paraît sans fin.

    Encore un peu de chemin, et nous arrivons enfin à Kinlochleven, petite bourgade qui sert de point de départ à de nombreux randonneurs. Avant de rejoindre le camping quelques kilomètres plus loin, nous déjeunons, Mylène a même acheté des glaces pour se faire pardonner !

    Nous voilà ensuite enfin au camping, situé au bord du Loch Leven, assez tôt pour avoir le temps de faire une lessive, changer des plaquettes de frein et graisser les transmissions. Maintenant, c'est repos !    Read more

    Day 66

    Gaur > Refuge de Meanach - 30km

    Après une journée bien fatiguante la veille, nous nous réveillons avec pour ambition d’aller petit-déjeuner à la Corrour Station House, le café/restaurant situé à la gare de Corrour, la gare ferroviaire la plus haute du Royaume-Uni (1340 pieds, soit 400m).

    Seulement 15 kilomètres à parcourir... Mais c’était sans compter la qualité de la route sur les 10 derniers.

    Après avoir quitté la Great North Trail, nous revoici dessus, avec des chemins de grosses caillasses et un bon dénivelé plus adaptés aux marcheurs et aux VTT (soit dit en passant, souvent électriques)…
    Après avoir hésité plusieurs fois à faire demi-tour, nous parvenons tant bien que mal à destination pour l’heure du déjeuner et dégustons un délicieux curry végétarien.
    Il nous reste à présent 20km dans la montagne pour rejoindre Glencoe, nous espérons que le parcours sera plus adapté à nos vélos. Les 5 kilomètres suivants le confirment, nous sommes sur un chemin de gravier, facilement praticable !
    Passés une rivière, nous arrivons sur un sentier, clairement pas faisable avec nos vélos mais nous décidons de continuer en espérant une amélioration et parce que revenir sur nos pas nous aurait amené à faire un énorme détour.

    Et dans quelle aventure nous nous sommes encore embarqués : la fonte de la neige a creusé plusieurs torrents, rejoignant la rivière, que nous devons traverser. Mylène n’arrive pas à porter son vélo sur certains passages, c’est donc Bastien qui s’y colle.
    Après 6km en 3h, une belle fatigue et les pieds trempés : il est déjà presque 19h, nous devons donc réfléchir à bivouaquer une nouvelle fois car nous n’atteindrons pas la ville avant encore 10km.
    Nous sommes au milieu de nulle part, Bastien part en repérage. Et la, comme tombée du ciel, la maison à 50m, qui semblait inhabitée, est en fait un refuge où nous allons pouvoir faire un feu et dormir à l’abri ! Un groupe de marcheurs arrive quelques minutes après, heureusement, le refuge possède deux pièces. Un des marcheurs nous propose même de l'eau filtrée pour qu'on puisse cuisiner sans se poser de question !    Read more

    Day 4

    To the highlands and back

    We woke up this morning to the first rain of the trip and the temperature had dropped considerably with it.

    We left Dumbarton and travelled up the narrow, winding road along the western shore of Loch Lomond, before continuing north towards Glencoe, the skiing and bushwalking centre of Scotland, and the start of the Highlands. The clouds got lower, the traffic got heavier and the scenery more spectacular at every turn.

    We stopped for lunch at Kings House Hotel, which is a popular stop for bushwalkers on multi day hikes, before continuing on to Glencoe and a walk down the main street.

    We then headed back south towards Oban, our destination for the night... but not without stopping first at Castle Stalker, an island castle best known in popular culture as "The Castle Aaaaarrrrrrggghhh" in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

    Dinner tonight was at the Oban Wetherspoons, part of the chain of 850 pubs across the UK. Fun fact, each Wetherspoons pub has unique carpet, representative of either the building or location. I've included a photo of the Oban threads for the record 😁    Read more

    Vallée de Glen Coe 🏔️

    C’est le moment de quitter Édimbourg: sous la pluie cette fois (il fallait bien qu’elle débarque ☔️).

    Récupération de notre voiture de location et première expérience de conduite à gauche avec volant à droite 🫣🤯… une bonne demie heure d’adaptation avec l’impression d’avoir le cerveau monté à l’envers 😅. Après des inter sections, des ronds points, des dépassements par la droite… on s'habitue doucement. Fâcheuse tendance à dévier à gauche persistante 🤷🏻‍♂️.

    Après 2h45 de route entre montagnes et Lochs : arrivée dans la brume et sous la pluie dans la vallée de Glen Coe. Une ambiance mystique et silencieuse, envoutante. La randonnée de 5H prévue n'était pas pertinente car le sommet "Pap of Glen" se trouvait dans les nuages, donc la vue finale aurait été décevante. On ne se laisse pas abattre, alternative vers The Lost Valley avec nos imperméables pour 2h30 de marche avec peu de randonneurs, un joli parcours ! Nous sommes passés à proximité de l'endroit où la cabane dˋHagrid a été construite puis démontée pour le tournage des films.

    Direction Fort Williams pour rejoindre l'hôtel et se réchauffer un peu, avant d'aller diner : pizza au feu de bois 🍕et bière locale 🍻, un lieu entre taverne et chapelle ⛪️ !    Read more

    Day Seven: The Road Back to Edinburgh

    Today was a perfect end to the Highlands tour. I am leaving feeling satisfied. We were going to start with a hike by the three sisters, which we stopped at on our way up. But Scottish weather took over. It was winding like yesterday but so much colder. So, instead, we ended up finding a little waterfall right below the highway. There were 3 falls merging to one, and it was a cool find with the mountain backdrop. It even started hailing out of nowhere for only about 2 minutes. It was so unexpected yet an exciting and random moment to lighten the mood and make the drive so much easier. On the way back, since we didn't hike, we had time to go to a castle ruins as well as the Stirling castle museum. We started with the ruins, which was really our hidden gem of the trip. It was in a picturesque town with classic architecture surrounded by mountains and a massive river with cascades. Then, walking up to the ruins, you could instantly feel the history and memories stored there. It felt so strange seeing a place that stored generations of memories. Turns out that this castle has a dark past. When walking around it, I passed a stone lined hole, and at first, I believed it was just a cellar or something. Turns out it was the execution pit where they decapitated people... There was even a hanging tree. But it did honestly make the experience even better. It was one of the best stops for me. On our way back through the town, we found a burial site that was on an island and just decided to check it out. It was for the McNabbs. Which seemed so familiar, and it was driving me insane where I knew that name from. By the craziest of coincidences, I am related to the McNabbs! What are the odds of that? And we weren't even supposed to go to this town in the first place. It is hard to comprehend how things work out sometimes. Moreover, as soon as we entered the burial site, the clouds cleared, and it stopped rain, to start raining as soon as we left! Then, to finish the drive, I got to tour a castle museum. A chance to hear all the long forgotten stories of the past. It was so interesting to see why things were built and how many times the ownership of the castle changed. Within a span of just under 50 years, the castle was under seige 8 times, which from 1296 to 1299, the castle was retaken each year by the other side. The poor common people! Even crazier there was no water in the castle, so everyone was given one free Scottish ale pint (which is equivalent to 4.5 pints today). It was a great finish to the Highlands for sure. Getting to see all the views, especially from the castle, was mindblowing. Honestly, I won't change a thing about this leg of the trip. It was a great chance to get comfortable with traveling.     Day Six: Fort William

    Welcome to the true Scottish experience. Today was rainy, windy, and foggy. Yet it was absolutely fantastic. When I was planning to come to Scotland, this was exactly what I expected, and it was beautiful. Even got to see some sheep, as soon as we entered the field, they walked up and just stared at us. Honestly, they are very cute animals. Bht then we started the hikes with a waterfall. Walking through a valley, looking around at misty hills with a massive waterfall in the rain, was just breathtaking. It all just made me feel so small in the right kind of way. Just leaving your soul so satisfied and relaxed. I felt at peace. Nothing else mattered. Even got to walk on a bridge that was made up of 3 metal wires, two to hold on to and one to walk on, completely terrifying experience over a river when fast winds are pushing you around. But where else do u get to do something like that?? Walking back was its own experience, I have never felt wind so hard. You think it would suck but it made the hike. We were both completed soaked at the end, too. Afterward, we went up to the viaduct that was featured in Harry Potter. On the way, we randomly stopped at a church over looking a loch for lunch, which ended up being where Outlander filmed a wedding! A truly get find. But the Viaduct was so large that it is truly a marvel how people build things like this back in the day. And it's always insane to go to film locations. As it kid, it feels like something you will never have a chance to see, yet here we are! We decided to do a larger loop, but of course, it started raining again, and even Scottish rain can get annoying over time. Yet it was the right decision since we got more great high views and got to go through a board walk in a fairy tale forest and have a coffee in an old train dinner car to warm up before we left. Overall, I think our two full days were a perfect combination of weather and locations to get a solid grasp on the Highlands! Now it's time for a beer, dinner, and some quality cousin time.
