    May 16 Dunnottar Castle

    We prepared ourselves for a big day. The plan for the day is to walk to Dunnottar Castle from Stonehaven and all going well back again. It is a 5 km walk each way with a good bit of climbing from Stonehaven up to the cliff tops. Fortunately the sea fog had cleared overnight and it was a lovely day although the breeze was a bit cool.
    We made our way along the foreshore as far as the port and had a stop for coffee before tackling the path up to the clifftops. We made it with a couple of short stops and within a short distance the remains of Dunnottar castle came into view in the distance.
    The castle was built on a rocky headland surrounded on 3 sides by the North Sea. There is steep path down to the base of the headland and up to the top of the headland making it easily defensible.
    The headland has been inhabited since before Christ and the main castle was built in the 15th and 16th centuries although the chapel dates back to the 12th century. In the 17th century the "Honours of Scotland" being the Scottish Crown Jewels were hidden in the castle from the invading armies of Oliver Cromwell. Throughout history the castle has been occupied variously by the Scots and the English.
    It was relatively quiet at the castle so we were able to have a good look around before making our way back to the port for a well earned couple of beers and a late lunch at the pub.
    After that we headed back to the motorhome for a lie down and a quiet night.    Read more

    May 15 Stonehaven

    We were a little slow to get underway this morning but it was a nice morning in Fraserburgh. We headed off trundling down our old friend the A92 which is fine as far as roads go but it is not wide and there are next to no places to pull over and let people pass. As a result progress is not fast. As we headed south towards Aberdeen a sea fog began to roll in off the Atlantic and the temperature dropped quite noticeably. We took the ring road around Aberdeen which was a great expressway with hardly any traffic on it.
    Not long after that we arrived in Stonehaven which is a beautiful fishing village. We were too early to check-in so parked up and went for a wander around the town before having a coffee. We headed back to the camp to catch up on chores and have a quiet evening in the motorhome    Read more

    Dunnottar Castle & Aberdeen

    Um zum Dunnottar Castle zu kommen, gehts mit dem Bus von Edinburgh nach Aberdeen. Dort bieten sie Tagesausflüge zum Castle und Royal Deeside an. Von Edinburgh hät ich leider nur spanische Touren gefunden…
    John hat mich schon gewarnt: Aberdeen ist nicht grade besonders :(
    alles hier ist Grau in Grau und es gibt nicht viele Attraktionen… Nach 3h Busfahrt check ich also gleich mal ins Hotel ein (wo ich eines der größeren Zimmer mit Ausblick zum Hafen bekomme) und mach mich auf eine eher enttäuschende Erkundungstour durch Aberdeen. Maritim Museum und Strand (mit Codona Vergnügungspark): mehr gibts für mich nicht her….

    Am nächsten Tag gehts mit „Rabbies“ zum Dunnottar Castle: ein absolutes Highlight für mich Burgen-Fan 😍
    Umringt von 3 Seiten Meer steht die prächtige Ruine mitten auf einer Klippe, umringt von einer atemberaubenden Aussicht!
    Da hat sich Aberdeen auf jeden Fall gelohnt. Leider können wir nur 70min bleiben, was definitiv zu wenig ist. Weiter gehts auf eine kleine Wanderung in einem National Reservat und in das kleine Städtchen Braemer und weiter zur Royal Deeside.
    Da hätte ich lieber mehr Zeit beim Castle verbracht, also für die Zukunft: entweder Auto mieten oder sonst irgendwie selbstständig zur Burg fahren!    Read more

    Day 2

    An der Küste entlang...

    Heute hat uns unsere Reise nach Newburgh, Slains Castle, Cullen, Elgin, Dunnottar Castle und Stonehaven geführt. Aber der Reihe nach.
    In Newburgh haben wir am Strand die Robben besucht. Auf dem Weg dorthin sind wir durch ganze Felder gelbblühenden Stechginster gewandert. Den die gibt es hier - übrigens genauso wie die Narzissen - wirklich überall.
    Danach gings weiter Richtung Norden, die Küste hinauf zur Ruine von Slains Castle, die direkt am Meer liegt und wo Dracula gedreht wurde.
    Danach waren wir in Cullen, wo wir eine großartige "Cullen Skink", eine schottische Fischsuppe gegessen haben. Am Viadukt vorbei ging es weiter nach Elgin.
    Dort haben wir die Ruine der Cathedrale, die 1224 dieser Bischofsstadt gebaut wurde, gesehen. Sie wurde die "Die Leuchte des Nordens" genannt.
    Das heutige Highlight war Dunnottar Castle. Die Burgruine in Aberdeenshire liegt wenige km von Stonehaven entfernt auf einer felsigen Landzunge.
    Die verschiedenen Gebäude innerhalb der Burganlage aus dem 14. und 16 Jh umfassen einen Wohnturm und ein Palastgebäude.
    180 Stufen hinunter und wieder hinauf und der zu zahlende Eintritt haben sich wirklich gelohnt.
    Kälte, Wind und Regen konnten uns nicht davon abhalten, uns diese eindrucksvolle Anlage anzuschauen.
    Am Rückweg haben wir uns noch in Stonehaven am Beach bei "The Bay" die leckersten Fish & Chips geholt.
    Dann gings zurück nach Aberdeen, wo wir ein wohlverdienten Bier genossen haben und dann noch zu einer kleinen Stadtbesichtigung aufgebrochen sind.    Read more

    It was up at the crack of dawn to set trail today out on Slug Road, as it had rained off and on all night. It rained just a tad while setting, as it did while the pack ran it, but all was well. Only issue was someone had kicked out a few of the marks, but fortunately we were able to fix that before anyone got lost.

    This 10 km trail came through with plenty of shiggy, muddy trails, several swampy bits, a bit of elevation . . . and even a water crossing. All in a days work, as they say. Everyone looked happy at the beer/sweets check (yes, there was a beer check 😊 ). D for DONE!!    Read more

    Farther up the coast lies the town of Stonehaven which is a beautiful fishing port. I was thinking of the pilgrimage to Santiago all morning as I walked along the cliff between Dunnottar and Stonehaven, and then, in the town I came upon the Church of St James the Great (Santiago) so I took it as a sign to stop to show a little gratitude and to have a quiet moment to reflect on the past five months of travel.Read more

    Dunnottar Castle is credited with saving the Honours of Scotland (Scottish Crown Jewels) when all of Scotland was invaded and the castle stood as the last holdout. They had been used in the king’s coronation but couldn’t be returned to Edinburgh because Oliver Cromwell had marched north and taken the city. It was decided that Dunnottar would be the safest place and they were smuggled into the castle in sacks of wool just before Cromwell’s troops laid siege. When the castle surrendered six months later, the honours were nowhere to be found and could not be destroyed by the English forces. The wife of the governor of the castle had been allowed to visit three times during the siege. Each time she hid the crown, sceptre, or sword in among her things and got them past the English to be brought to a nearby church and buried under the floor. At the time of the Restoration, the honours were dug up and returned to the King.Read more

    Driving out of Stonehaven, everything looked fine as a nice morning for a run. But as we made our way out of town, and gained elevation, we soon found that there was snow. It actually snowed so hard that much of the trail ended up being covered . . . so it was quite an adventure, but with a little help from the hares we managed to complete over 5 miles of foot stomping fun (including a water crossing, damn). By the time we finished, the sun was out and brightly shining. The on after was in the opposite direction, so some of us went back to Stonehaven for a bite to eat, and a couple of us ended up staying there all afternoon, sampling whisky. A grand day for sure.Read more

    We had a fun trail that started in Mineralwell Park in the center of Stonehaven. After wiggling our way to the edge of town, trail then started working its way through the forest and countryside. Bouncing through a few neighborhoods and small parks, the pack then found themselves headed out of town and out to the amazing Ury House. Ury House was built in 1885, on an estate that dates back to 1413. Plenty of history in every direction, the pack seemed to enjoy it all. This was my first time to hare in Scotland, and with a lovely co-hare, Fireflaps. So the question came up on how many countries I have hared in, and that would now be 42 (well, actually 41 since Antarctica is not considered a country, but have hared on all 7 continents).Read more
