    Day 1 Warsaw

    August 3, 2018 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Time for a new trip: This time to the Baltic states and additional Warsaw! Marcel joined me and we drove to Memmingen airport to find out that the flight to Warsaw was late for 2:15 hours. We decided to have something to eat in the meantime until I checked the flight status again and luckily it changed to 15 minutes delay which was great. After the arrival we had a hassle to get another bus ticket to reach the city. Finally we arrived at the palace of culture which is a quite impressive relict of the Soviet time. We walked to our hostel and afterwards we explored the neighbourhood which consisted almost only of banks and businesses - okay for one night. At least we found a small shop which sold beer. Later we went back to the hostel and slept. This night Warsaw was only a stopover!Read more

    Day 2 Tallinn

    August 4, 2018 in Estonia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

This morning we got up to reach our actual destination for the weekend: Tallinn! After a short Uber ride we arrived at Chopin airport. The flight to Tallinn was quite normal and when we arrived the rain stopped right on time - the rest of the day was perfect weather! We obtained our accomodation which was a old furniture fabric turned into really stylish flats. Later we checked a neighbourhood called Telliskivi which offers street art and hipster cafés/restaurants. We had dinner there and after a walk to the sea we went to several pubs in the old town. Although it was Saturday night we didn't feel that there was much going on, it felt chilled everywhere, so we headed back to our flat quite soon.Read more

    Day 3 Tallinn

    August 5, 2018 in Estonia ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

On this day we got up and went to the city's old town to do a free walking tour. On the way we grabbed a small breakfast and arrived on time for the start of the tour. Unfortunately it turned out that the guide was a big nerd which was eager to talk a lot but not everything was interesting. After one hour we managed to walk about 300 metres and then we had enough: We left the group and did our own tour through the old town. The weather was again perfect, lots of sun and almost no clouds. We visited all famous sights and saw also the sea again. After a while we had a beer in a café and went back to the flat. Later we returned to the Telliskivi neighbourhood to have dinner in an Estonian restaurant. Afterwards we went on top of the old city hall at the sea to watch the rest of the sunset. Then we enjoyed a craft beer in a bar of the old town. At around midnight we returned to the flat.Read more

    Day 4 Riga

    August 6, 2018 in Latvia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

In the morning we left our fancy apartment and took a bus to Riga. The ride was about 4,5 hours long and was good. When we arrived we looked for our next flat in the old town of Riga. We found it in the near of the Riga cathedral. After we could check in we strolled around the old town and saw already some sights of Riga. We rested in a park and drank a beer. Then we returned to the flat. Later we went to have dinner at one of the local Latvian restaurants. Next to the interiour (a cool vaulted cellar) the food was delicious and the beer was great. The evening mood already started once we finished dinner. Therefore we enjoyed a beer in our flat and played awesome music. In the end we didn't go out anymore, as it was Monday it wasn't that bad anyway.Read more

    Day 5 Riga

    August 7, 2018 in Latvia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

This day we got up and headed to St. Peters Church where a free walking tour started. This time we were lucky - the guide Tom was informative and funny. He took us 2 hours around the old town and told a lot of stories. After the tour we decided to rent bikes to explore areas outside of the city center. No sooner said than done we went to a bike rental shop and got us 2 bikes. We visited the neighbourhood north and east of the old town where lots of Jugendstil buildings are. Then we saw the Nativity Cathedral and a big market. Next to the market was a prominent Soviet building which looked a little bit like the Empire State Building. On the top was an observation deck, so we went up there and enjoyed the view over the city. Afterwards we crossed the river Daugava to see the city from another perspective. Later we went to have dinner in another Latvian restaurant. For the sunset we sat at the river Daugava and drank some beers.Read more

    Day 6 Vilnius

    August 8, 2018 in Lithuania ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

This morning we left Riga with a bus towards Vilnius. Everything went smoothly again and we arrived around noon. We met our host of our accomodation and it turned out that he was kind of a Hippie. His flat had its own old charme and this also in every detail - oldschool. After hearing a part of an old vinyl LP we went out to explore the city center of Vilnius. We were up Gediminas hill with a good view over different city parts. Later we were also strolling through small roads in the old town. Next to the bastion we made a break and returned back to the flat to hear vinyl records again. We carefully selected a best of from the LP collection for the time here including for example Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode and U2. Hearing Depeche Mode in this special environment was terrific. For dinner we went to a local Lithuanian restaurant and pub which offered a variety of food and beers. Afterwards we sat a while in a central place and just enjoyed the cozy night. The we returned to the flat, turned on some lights and enjoyed the atmosphere with great music.Read more

    Day 7 Vilnius

    August 9, 2018 in Lithuania ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

At 10 AM we made our way to the city hall where our next free walking tour started. Our guide showed us around in the old town and also the Uzupis neighbourhood. This area claims itself as Republic of Uzupis, similar to Christantia in Copenhagen. It is a place where lots of artists live and therefore nice to see. The guide made a great choice of stops and so we could see other spots than the day before. After the tour we returned to our flat to relax and of course to play some vinyls. Then we went to a park in the old town to enjoy the awesome weather and also an ice cream. Later went to have dinner in a local restaurant in the old town. Once we finished the food we went straight to the last spot which we didn't see yet, the hill of the three crosses. There we enjoyed the sunset and drank a beer. Afterwards we went to some bars and tried to get to know the local nightlife a little bit.Read more

    Day 8 Warsaw

    August 10, 2018 in Poland ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

It was time to leave Vilnius and therefore we got up very early to reach the airport. We flew to Warsaw - the last stop on our trip :-) When we arrived we checked our apartment and were shocked! It was really small and didn't even have a proper bed and sheets!!! :-( it seemed to be a leftover from the former Soviet Union, maybe it was a live museum ^^. We decided to find another flat and found one some kilometres away from the old town. We rested in the Lazienki park for a while and called an Uber to get there. The new flat was great in comparison, luckily. After some time we walked to the old town. It is really beautiful, but crowded with tourists. Therefore we went on to an area above the river Weichsel to drink a beer. Afterwards we had dinner, piroggi and a rye soup - very tasty. We left the old town and walked back to our flat, quite a long walk as we noticed then.Read more

    Day 9 Warsaw

    August 11, 2018 in Poland ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

Our plan for this day was to do a free walking tour in old town to get to know it a little bit better, but as we woke up it was raining cats and dogs! After all this time with perfect sunny weather we haven't been prepared at all. We decided to sleep late and relax until the weather got better. In the afternoon the rain ended and we were able to go into the old town. We catched a free walking tour. It led through the old town and was quite interesting. Afterwards we ate polish dinner again and returned to the apartment. Finally we went out to explore the nightlife of Warsaw. We found a club which was partly outside and it seemed to be quite local. After some hours we returned to the flat.Read more

    Day 10 Going home

    August 12, 2018 in Poland ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

We woke up and it was time to go to the airport. We took an Uber to the airport and we arrived there way too early. Everything went fine and we arrived at home safely. The vacation went by so fast and now it was over. Visiting 4 countries meant that we had different experiences and can compare them up to a certain extent. All places we have been to have their pros and their cons. Tallinn has an awesome old town and is lovely small, Riga is a liitle bit bigger, but still has kept its small town and medieval style, Vilnius has the best price-performance ratio and Warsaw is a big city with great food. Overall it has been great to travel to these countries and I hope I can come back to one of them in the future. Especially Lithuania had a young and vibrant attitude. See you next time...Read more
