    Driving to Palm Springs

    October 13, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 38 °C

As usual, Martin packed like crazy the night before, updating all of his To-Do lists while Kyrian helped him to select his clothes to bring. As usual, Kyrian was already organized way in advance! We needed something for hiking in the hot weather, something fancier for a gallery party with The Artist Shag, and then appropriate attire for dinner and various cocktail parties. We got out of the house at lunchtime, and after a quick stop at our Mobile gas station (getting also our traditional road-trip-snack-food, Cool Ranch Doritos) we hit the 134, the 210, the 10, and finally Monterey Road. Boy, it was hot when we arrived! And as if we had announced ourselves, our friends Cinnia and David, pulled up just a second later! The four of us were sharing a cool Airbnb condo on a golf course in Palm Desert.Read more

    Pioneertown and Pappy & Harriet’s

    October 14, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

After reading a lot of gossip about Pappy & Harriet’s (NY folks taking over a desert joint, incurring wacky lawsuits, the whole shebang), we thought we’d have to see (and taste) for ourselves. The town is in fact an artificial movie set, albeit with real buildings, as opposed to those simple facades that they use elsewhere. Martin did not see any church, but the “town” had a bank, a general store, and even a film museum! And of course, said saloon, Pappy and Harriet’s. Yum, we finally got our Wild West burgers, and not to forget their world-famous Chili Fries. On the way, Kyrian met one of the cowboys inside the Wild West Theatre across the parking lot from Pappy & Harriet’s. He turned out to be an actor with a group called The Bravados, who invited us to their monthly Wild West Show the next day. Sure enough, we’d be back – if there weren’t a certain FEMA alert…Read more

Route 62 and a thunder storm

    October 15, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

After a lot of discussion as to whether this storm alert from FEMA would really impact our plans – yesss, we went back to Pioneertown to watch the Wild West Show. Kyrian expected some sort of rodeo but in fact, it was a situational theater performance, very well done. The cast was made up of possible “Desert Rats” trying to escape the L.A. rat race. Wonderful people, and very talented! Martin joined the team in a photo op – but wasn’t allowed to touch a gun (no license). On our way along Route 62, we discovered the real desert vibe – from folks who want to “Keep Mojave Weird” and conspiracy theorists who believe that “Giant Rock” was cut in half by a laser, to elegant desert design boutiques of the fancy kind. Oh boy – the weatherman was right: 30% chance of thunder turned into an insane atmospheric river, knocking down trees and flooding the streets in Palm Springs. But hehe, we were back in our pad, safe and sound when the storm hit! So from the comfort of our own patio chairs, we witnessed the most gruesome wind gusts that blew branches through the air and onto the golf course. Martin’s camera was hit by one during filming – both survived. Our friends made it back eventually, too. We finished our day eating pizza and watching Robocop on TCM (which happened to start the very moment we turned on the TV).Read more

Windmills and The Artist Shag Gallery

    October 16, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We wanted to visit the wind farm, so we pulled up at the Palm Springs Windmill Tours visitors center. We were told that because we hadn’t booked a tour, we could not view their exhibits and video. They offer golf cart guided tours and self driving tours driving your own car through the wind farm. The golf cart tour sounded like fun so we put this on our list of things to do at a later time.
We’re curious to find out why a large portion of the windmills aren’t even rotating, and how much energy the whole farm actually produces. Later, on our way to visit The Shag Store in Palm Springs, Martin’s camera battery pooped out. Har har, he had a spare battery pack with him, but no Allen Wrench to remove the camera mount! So we quickly found an ACE hardware store – whoa, in Palm Springs they have a lot more stuff than in L.A. - more desert design and lifestyle merchandise. Very chic. Then off to The Shag Store (where we had missed the opening party yesterday because of the storm). Shag wasn’t there, but his images were super fun. That evening, we had a good swim in the pool and a selfie session in the jacuzzi, capping it off with Mexican food which our friend Cinnia brought back to our “home.”

    Trip back to L.A.

    October 17, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We quickly packed and it was painless. We left Palm Desert around noon and after just a 2-hour drive, we were back in Studio City and glad to again be part of the “Real World.”
