  • Amarillo KOA

    7. november 2015, Forenede Stater ⋅ 🌙 46 °F

Nice KOA. THERE ARE A FEW TREES, but we got to have the Texas experience at our site... no trees. I'll get to see if the stars at night are really big and bright here in the panhandle of Texas.

  • International UFO Museum & Research Ctr

    9. november 2015, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

We enjoyed the cheez-fest, but a good part of the museum was in earnest, too. We give the organizers credit ... they are not impartial, but they are making an honest effort to prove their case with scientific evaluation of real data.

On a side note, we understand that the Army PR guy who sent out the press release saying that the Roswell findings were just a weather balloon, was inducted into the Roswell UFO Hall of Fame for his contribution to tourism in the area.

  • Bitter Lakes Nat'l Wildlife Refuge

    9. november 2015, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

These lakes are actually giant sink holes and the water is salty. It is an important site for a large number of migrating birds, and is home to the largest number of dragonfly species of anywhere in the U.S.

Even though it was the middle of the day, we saw flocks of pelicans, sandhill cranes, coots, ducks of all stripes, snow geese, and some very cute quail. Plenty of dragonflys, and unfortunately WASPS which kept us from walking very far.

Unfortunately, the birds were too far to photograph well, but through our binoculars they were up close and personal. Gordon was happy to discover that the brown kangaroo hanging out with the cranes was actually a male crane, red crest and all.

The last photo is just for reference ... that is what it looks like off to the horizon in all directions just outside the Bitter Lakes area.

  • Bottomless Lakes State Park

    10. november 2015, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 54 °F

Another set of sink holes. The cowboys that named it tried discerning their depth by tying lariat ropes together and dropping them in the water. Because they were short on lariats, they decided the small lakes were bottomless.

They had a great little interpretive center, and we got to see a roadrunner. Two, actually, though number two was outside the park. The one IN the park was obviously paid by the State to entertain visitors as he ran out into the road as we approached, ran around in a circle, ran to the other side and back again before disappearing on the same side he originally emerged from.

Shh. We picked up a few excellent small specimens of selenite from the ground.

  • Carlsbad KOA

    10. november 2015, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

A very nice campground, indeed. We arrived early and agreed to spend the afternoon lazing, washing hair, and doing LAUNDRY (John will be relieved to hear).

Weather is gorgeous ... sunny with dappled clouds ... and WINDY! I think it is just getting going, though. They are predicting winds of 40 mph this evening and gusts up to 50! Fortunately, the wind appears to be behind us so the geezer mobile should be aerodynamically situated to weather the weather with minimal shake, rattle and rolling.

They have a little cafe here which gave off a tempting aroma when we checked in, so we have ordered a beef brisket dinner to be delivered to our site.

  • Here's a tip ...

    10. november 2015, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

When traveling, if at all possible, avoid washing your hair in areas where the water comes from aquifers created by passing through living limestone and salty gypsum. Unless you have a marine haircut, perhaps, like SOME people we know.

This is NOT the "wind hair" I promised in an earlier post. This is my hair (if such an appellation still applies) after putting coconut oil on it and trying to style it with the hair dryer.

Mind you, Gordon is the guy that failed to notice the time I came home with FLAME RED hair. ("Notice anything?" "Uhhh ... you got your hair cut?") When I showed up after my shower, Gordon opened his eyes wide (you could see the hamster doing overtime on the treadmill of his mind) and said, "Isn't YOUR hair cute!"

  • Fortifying ourselves for the caves

    11. november 2015, Forenede Stater ⋅ 🌬 57 °F

We stopped at the Blue House Bakery and Cafe in Carlsbad prior to heading out to the caverns. We figured a cup of coffee and a sweet roll would fortify us for the spelunking ahead. But alas... the pastry case was empty! Only one lone croissant left, but that was taken out even as we watched. Oh no! What to do?

Heather noticed that they still had bagels, so we both got chili bagels with cream cheese which came with more chilis to spread on the bagels. Very tasty, warm but not too hot. After finishing the bagels we felt prepared for our adventures at Carlsbad Cavern. But if we had thought about the empty pastry display further, we might have known that today might hold more surprises in store for us.

  • Carlsbad Caverns

    11. november 2015, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

Gordon was all excited to see Carlsbad Caverns. He can vaguely remember coming here as a child. We had decided that we should take the elevator down and up so we would be able to enjoy the walk through the caverns rather than proving how strong we are by hiking down the steep 1.5 mile path into the cave, and then back up the same even steeper path.

But horrors! The elevator was busted! We had to walk down the steep path. We tried to make it all the way, but did not make it very far. But we did get far enough to see some stalactites, which made Gordon a happy camper.

Heather always admires Gordon's gift for revisionist history. First, it was quite a little hike from the visitor's center to the cavern mouth. We started down the path into the cavern, so poorly lit it was impossible to see the walkway at times, and unsure how far was going to be the point of no return. We were SURE we were practically to the bottom where we could start enjoying the wonders of the cavern. Then we came upon a gentleman in a plaid shirt, camera hanging from his neck, taking a breather on his way up. Heather had the bad sense to ask him how much further it was. "Oh, quite a ways. You're about 1/4-1/3 of the way down. And it gets a lot steeper." WHAT?!? Well, Heather is glad Gordon is happy. The MOUTH of the cavern is truly awesome, and we are glad we got to see it.

  • Cherry Cider now in stock!

    11. november 2015, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

On the way back to the KOA, we stopped at the store in White's City. While driving into to the park, Heather saw that they had Cherry Cider. So we stopped to get some. Unfortunately we wasted our $4.50. After having a couple of sips and getting a bad taste in her mouth, Heather read the ingredients on the bottle and announced that there were no cherries and no apples, but only sugar and chemicals. So we put the bottles down and had a drink of water, trying to get the taste of the chemicals out of our mouths.

But in spite of all our set backs today, we both are having fun and are enjoying our adventure.

We are here in the mountains. But the town looks like a ski town without the snow. Not very pretty. Now we go down a very steep hill to Alamagordo.

Heather thought the whole place felt creepy so she took a photo of a parking lot to show how she felt.Læs mere

  • Three Rivers Petroglyph Site

    12. november 2015, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

Heather loves petroglyphs, and this was absolutely the best site we've ever seen. Over 20,000 prehistoric petroglyphs in this one small area. The ranger told us we were free to roam around, and did not have to stick to the path. His last words before we headed uphill were, "Oh, and don't pet the rattlesnakes."

We did not see any rattlers, but did see a roadrunner at close range and a couple of bunny rabbits. The petroglyphs themselves had the biggest variety of well-preserved designs we've seen in all the sites we've seen taken together. All future sites are doomed to be disappointments.

  • The first A-bomb tests

    12. november 2015, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

Just East of us today is the site of the first A-bomb tests near the White Sands Missle Range. You can tour the site on two days a year. Needless to say, we missed it. Unfortunately, I deleted all my photos of the area as they were taken into the sun. Perhaps tomorrow on our way out so you can get an idea of the flat desolation of the area. (Heh ... probably were mountains before the tests...)Læs mere

  • Nuts!

    12. november 2015, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

Ever since we entered Texas we've been seeing pecan orchard after pecan orchard ... but NO one was selling pecans! Today we saw a place, and about did a wheelie screeching into the parking lot. We also stopped at the Pistachio place while we were at it. Heather loves nuts (as anyone who has seen her with Gordon can attest).Læs mere

  • Alamogordo KOA

    12. november 2015, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

Small little KOA which, like Alamogordo itself, is nothing special except for it's extraordinary surroundings. They did make a fine effort, however, with their Thanksgiving front drive decorations. You can glimpse the sunset on the surrounding mountains behind Gordon and the geezer-mobile.

As we were setting up the geezer-mobile, we were greeted by a grizzled old gent with a large belly, a gravelly voice and a cheerful grin. He appeared to be the most long-standing guest resident. He introduced himself as Bob and welcomed us to the campground. He pointed out his trailer, and warned us to watch out for his killer attack dogs. “They’ll LICK ya to death!”

In the morning I was able to get a photo of him in a lively conversation with two other residents, the killer attack pups, and his rescue plastic ghost holding a jack-o-lantern.

  • White Sands National Monument

    13. november 2015, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

I've seen photos of white sand in Namibia, and this is as amazing! White gypsum in nearby mountains washes down into the plains where it forms selenite, which then breaks down into very fine pure white sand. It was hard to convince ourselves it wasn't snow, and we sure began to suffer some snow blindness before we left. But it was truly magnificent. Another of the many lesser known and visited National parks and monuments that will take your breath away.Læs mere

  • Driving thru Mesilla

    13. november 2015, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

Las Cruces was huge and spread out, and we pretty much drove straight through. But we got off the highway just to the West of the city to take a look at Mesilla ... an old Spanish town with many of the original buildings still intact and in use. They were even setting up a market in the town square in front of the old church. We passed by the building where Billy the Kid was tried and convicted. We thought we might eat there, but the narrow streets were too much for the geezer-mobile so we headed on West.Læs mere
