  • Shootout at the OK corral

    26 Kasım 2016, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

We had no idea what to expect at the performance of the “Shoot-out at the OK Corral”.

Heather thought that the performance would present a history lesson punctuated by a reenactment of the shootout. Gordon thought that there might be more than just a bunch of guys walking out, counting to 10 and then shooting each other, but could not imagine what it might be.

What it turned out to be was more in the style of a early 20th century melodrama, lacking only a Mary Pickford tied to the train tracks. The acting was large and expansive to impart emotion (and to make up for not being able to hear everything that was said). The audience was encouraged to cheer the good guys (we were told that the good guys wore ties), and boo the bad guys (who wore dirty old clothes). Gordon embraced this audience participation fully, and looks forward to bringing this form of honest and forthright display of encouragement to his next local theater group performance. Heather did not display the same enthusiasm as Gordon. Perhaps it was because she had thought it was childish, or that the acting skill was lacking, or that the all the children (including Gordon) where entirely too loud in there booing.

The performance was done all too soon, the dead scattered on the dirt before us. I would have cheered more and called for an encore, but I was afraid that the shooting of Gordon “Mad Dog” Sweet would have been the encore. Heather was applauding too, but I fear that it was because she was so happy that the performance was over.

So with a tear in my eye, we fled the stands and headed back to our car.

  • In search of warmer climes

    27 Kasım 2016, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☀️ 50 °F

OK Arizona has been great. And we'd thought to further explore New Mexico, too. But Dang! Look at the nighttime temperatures coming up.

We've decided to hightail it over to Texas and see if we can't extend our good fortune on the weather front. So to speak.Okumaya devam et

Can say much about the food other than it did not live up to the reviews. Then again, it might have been the best food for 100 miles.

  • San Angelo KOA

    28 Kasım 2016, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ 🌙 61 °F

Well, we survived our 6 hour journey from El Paso to San Angelo, TX. I had joked with Heather that I would take a blurry picture of nothing and post with with the caption of "this is what we saw in Eastern Texas". But I actually enjoyed the drive. Starting east of El Paso, there was lovely mesa covered lands, and then as we moved further east, the land became flatter and very expansive. Perhaps I am coming to appreciate Texas.

So we got to the KOA in San Angelo. It is very nice. But I suppose our standards might be loosening a bit. The first photo shows us under a mesquite tree, in an otherwise almost empty setting. The second photo shows what I don't see, the power lines, the other RVs, the total lack of grass. Oh well, all I can say is that with low standards we are very content.

Lots of locals here. Nothing but pick-ups out front, and plenty of'em. Bostick's must be doing a land office business.

Gordon is having a BLT which he considers always reliable. I'm going full local with the fraihhhd Cheeikin burger. And chips. And sweet tea.Okumaya devam et

  • Skip and Celia's house

    30 Kasım 2016, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☀️ 54 °F

We arrived safe and sound at my cousin Skip's (to the rest of the world, "Tod's") and Celia's house in Fairview, TX north of Dallas.

The weather is great, the pups (excuse me ... children!) welcoming. Daisy is the attentive one with the eyes that will not be denied. Mini is the small one that moves so fast it is impossible to get an unblurred photo.

Skip and Celia are the busy ones enjoying their retirement by playing with saws and working on grants in conference calls.

We enjoyed a delicious dinner of take-out Chinese and lots of laughs. We forgot the photos. Too hungry I guess.

Celia and I agree we learned to be hostesses at the feet of my aunt/her mother-in-law, Gwen and her, "Here's the kitchen, here's the house, make yourselves at home" philosophy. We are feeling very at home. And grateful.

  • Breakfast at Blue Corn Bar & Grill

    3 Aralık 2016, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ 🌧 48 °F

The rain was a real damper on our mornings plans. So to clear the blues and rain clouds, went out to breakfast. We had delicious huevos rancheros while watching the world go by. But once again our stomachs cried "feed me" before we were able to take a picture of the food.

There was a lovely patio where we could have sat, but, you know, the rain.

  • Sun City Texas

    3 Aralık 2016, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ 🌧 48 °F

We took a tour of Sun City Texas. Large! Huge! Gigantic! But there is a lot to recommend it. We loved the rolling oak tree covered open areas and the activities. But of course there were the downsides, everyone was old (except us of course), the lots were small, and the grocery stores are not the best in the entire world. Much to ponder.Okumaya devam et

We heard it was warmer here. Wet but warm. Even though the weather is less than ideal (the night before they got 10 inches of rain) we find ourselves charmed by this island. Can't wait for the rain to stop so we can explore.Okumaya devam et

  • Waking up in Paradise

    5 Aralık 2016, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ 🌧 52 °F

If the rain didn't wake us the thunder would have. We're in a break right now ... maybe it's stopped. We rolled up our pants and waded to the showers. The inch-thick mat Gordon put down so we didn't have to step in a puddle to get to the car is now covered by a 1/2-inch of water.

Ever industrious, Gordon decided this was the perfect time to squeegee off the trailer as it hasn't been cleaned since we left. I stuck my head out to survey the campground and declared gleefully, "we're camping in a water park!" Gordon (equally gleefully) shot back, "We're camping in a car wash!"
