    Postcard production

    Like I predicted: it’s raining almost the whole day. So despite buying calamari at the market it’s about postcard production today…

    It's been a while since I last painted and wrote postcards, and I've received a few puzzled comments about it. Don't you love me anymore? Have you forgotten me? Haven't I written back enough? No, no, and no.

    The postcard painting and writing phase simply seems to be over. Picasso also had blue and other phases; I had the postcard phase, and now I've entered the knitting phase. Actually, I've already left that phase a few times to dabble in crocheting phase.

    But I wanted to write one last postcard to explain myself and say goodbye.
    Unfortunately I really forgot everything I need for postcard productionv: my pens, my protractor, and the printed cards. Thanks to Campo y Hogar, I was able to buy some kind of replacements.

    So, they'll be improvised cards, but better than nothing, and my friends won't have to rack their brains anymore wondering why I've been neglecting them 🤣.    Read more

    After the storm

    The storm is over and today the sun came out again ☀️😊.

    Perfect for a Sunday walk to the last two beach bars that are still open.

    Tomorrow it will rain for a few more minutes, but no significant amounts, so no worries about that - and this will be the last rain until I leave end of November.

    Also a new plan has been created today: I think we will take the bus to Tarifa and the scooter to Vejer during the next two weeks.    Read more

    Túnel de Conil

    Behind the Iglesia de Santa Catalina there is an arch that is called Túnel de Conil.

    It is a hole in the house through which a path leads. It's just as high that I can go through it standing. You could also drive through by car or scooter, but currently this is not allowed 😜.

    Sea foam

    Today is still windy and this creates a large amount of sea foam, which is carried by the wind and tumbles across the beach, and with the bubbles wandering along the wet sand like crabs.

    Gold rush

    In October, when there are more people on the beach during the day, this is a fairly common sight at sunset.

    Then the treasure hunters are on the road with their metal detectors 🪙🪙🪙.

    Vejer de la Frontera

    Vejer de la Frontera is a city, where thr town center sits atop a 200-meter-high hill, on the banks of the Barbate River, 8 kilometers from the coast.

    The local economy relies on agriculture and small-scale summer tourism.

    Its walled historic center, which still preserves the castle and several significant churches, was declared a historical-artistic site in 1976. Vejer has been part of the well-known "Association of the Most Beautiful Villages of Spain" since 2014.

    We went there by scooter and explored the small town on foot and by scooter.

    Outside the historic center it goes up and down like on a roller coaster and with 125cc and two people you have to go full throttle if you want to get up the hill at an adequate pace 🛵🎢.

    It was a lot of fun for me and my Italian driving style helped me a lot when I couldn't find my way out of the one-way maze 🤣. Rainer didn't like that so much 🙄.

    Restaurante La Pluma

    This is a restaurant at the cost of Zahora. I not only like the beach there but also the restaurant itself.

    We sat outside and only enjoyed a drink but when I went inside to pay I saw all the tapas and thought I might come back for them one day...Read more

    Tarifa, 14km to Africa

    Today we took the bus to Tarifa and spent a day exploring the old town and the beach.

    The old town is manageable in size, the beach is beautiful, and the wind is fantastic. However, the coastline is quite built up, and the number of campervans in November is alarming. It's wonderful for a day trip, but I wouldn't want to stay longer than a day.

    Tarifa is located at the eastern end of the Costa de la Luz and is the southernmost point of mainland Europe. Due to its strategic location on the Strait of Gibraltar, Tarifa has repeatedly been the scene of historical events.

    Today, the town, along with Hoʻokipa in Hawaii and Fuerteventura, is one of the "world capitals" for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

    The distance to Morocco, and thus to the African continent, is only 14 km. Nowhere else are Europe and Africa closer together.

    Ferries, including high-speed catamarans, operate several times daily between Tarifa and Tangier.

    Its location between the European and African mainlands makes the region a key stopover for more than 200 species of migratory birds. In the sea, the meeting of the Atlantic and Mediterranean waters creates a unique ecosystem. Among its most spectacular inhabitants are dolphin and whale species such as the common dolphin, the striped dolphin, the bottlenose dolphin, the pilot whale, orcas, the sperm whale, and the fin whale.

    The oldest evidence of human habitation in the region is the approximately 60,000-year-old skull of a Neanderthal, discovered in a cave in the Rock of Gibraltar, 15 km from Tarifa.

    Robalo Lubina / Sea bass

    Today I watched a father and son fishing on the beach.

    The father showed and explained to me how he "installs" the hook in the half-sardine and he secured it many times with strong thread so that the sea bass would swallow the sardine, hook and all, deep inside.

    The son proudly showed me the sea bass he had already caught, and the father was just as proud when the boy showed me how far he could cast his line.    Read more

    Last weekend

    This is my last weekend on my favorite beach ⛱️🌊🌞.

    Next Saturday morning I will be on my way back 🛫 to good old Germany.

    Fortunately, I have so much overtime that my boss forced me to finally take some days off. That's why I only have to work 2 days next week.

    So maybe I'll make it to my favorite beach again during the week - we'll see.    Read more

    Seagulls

    At my favorite beach there are a lot of birds, in this case seagulls. Adult ones and babies. When the weather is cloudy and windy like today it's a wonderful place to observe seagulls because they have the whole beach for themselves.Read more

    Today I have the day off. Actually, I had taken tomorrow and the day after tomorrow off – I still have leftovers from working overtime – but tomorrow I have a training, so I had to swap my day off for today.

    Lunch at Puerto de Conil

    Today we went to lunch in the port of Conil. Actually, we wanted to go to Restaurante El Náutico de Conil but since Tuesday is closed, we were in Restaurante El Pastor.

    As very often we thought: if we cook for ourselves, it is better on the one hand and much cheaper on the other.

    In short: you don't necessarily have to eat here, even if mainly locals eat here and you might be misled by that...    Read more

    Playa del Puerco

    After lunch we rode the scooter through all kinds of small and unpaved streets and finally ended up at Playa del Puerco.

    It's also called Torre del Puerco and a long, unspoiled sandy beach between the village of Roche and Playa de la Barrosa.

    It is known for its fine, golden sand and the surrounding dunes and cliffs, which give it a wilder, yet more peaceful feel than neighboring La Barrosa.

    The name comes from the watchtower (Torre del Puerco) that stands at the beach's highest point. While it is a continuation of Playa de la Barrosa, it has a distinctly different atmosphere.    Read more

    Parroquia Santa Catalina de Alejandria

    This is the mainly used church in Conil in addition it is also the town hall.

    It was built at the end of the 16th century and consists of a single nave with a Latin cross floor plan and attached side chapels. The transept is covered by a vault carved from sandstone, and in its center, presiding over the main altar, is the coat of arms of the Ducal House of Medina Sidonia. The portal and bell tower date from the early 17th century. The cloister and the outbuildings of the former convent are from the 18th century.

    The whole hermitage, built in 1567, was founded by the Franciscan order of the "Minim Friars of Saint Francis of Paola," under the patronage of the Duke of Medina Sidonia and Lord of the Town of Conil, to worship Our Lady of Virtues, patron saint of this town. This building housed the former Minim convent. So it's a quite old building.

    The current Conil Town Hall occupies the cloister and outbuildings of this former convent. So you can go directly from the altar the town hall, which is a funny thing 😃.

    The offices were temporarily installed there in 1839, and ten years later it was officially and permanently established as the Town Hall. Inside, there is a magnificent courtyard that originated from the old convent.    Read more

    Chocos - Sepia Officinalis

    Tonight we had barbecue on the balcony for the last time, this time we prepared chocos.

    This variety of cuttlefish has a more intense flavor than other varieties caught in other fishing grounds. It is a decapod cephalopod mollusk, meaning it has ten arms. It is also known as sepia.

    It is caught year-round using various fishing methods: cuttlefish pots, gillnets, trawls, and trawls such as purse seines or beach seines.

    It lives on the bottom of shallow seas in sandy or sedimentary areas, where it partially buries itself, also feeding on aquatic plants and algae. It inhabits areas near the coast down to 150 meters deep.

    It feeds on fish, mollusks, and crustaceans such as crabs and shrimp.

    Its ink, instead of being black like that of squid, is sepia-colored, hence its name. It is very well adapted to swimming in midwater, an activity it practices intensely, always in a horizontal position.    Read more

    Chiclana de la Frontera

    Today we drove to Chiclana de la Frontera to return the scooter.

    The city has no charm for me. Other people seem to feel the same way, which is why life is still affordable for the locals.

    As a result, you can find everything you need for daily life here, and since the city isn't built right on the coast, there's more space, allowing it to grow somewhat larger than Conil.

    So if you need something, you can get it here.

    One thing immediately stands out: the small cast-iron balconies are everywhere and absolutely beautiful 😍.    Read more
