  • Agulo, Rother trail No.59, Gomera, Spain

    6 de novembro de 2021, Espanha ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

we have arrived in agulo, agulo is not only the most beautiful place on gomera - one of the greatest hiking trails on the island also starts here. so we went hiking today. the trail winds through the middle of the mighty, reddish cliff up to the mirador de agulo and on to the mirador de abrante, one of the parade viewpoints of gomera, and continues to the national park visitor center juego de bolas, which invites you to visit. the way back is via a no less beautiful path that runs above the barranco de las rosas.
the whole trail is 8.5km long, overcomes approx. 600 meters in altitude and takes 3.5 hours without breaks. although it is quite steep, it's *definitely* worth it!

  • Casa Rural Los Helechos, Agulo, Gomera

    7 de novembro de 2021, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

this night 🌛 was the second night in agulo and today we had breakfast ☕️ in our accommodation. if you ever stay in gomera come to agulo it‘s such a cozy village and the casa i stay in is simply amazing. if been to gomera several times but never in agulo. this was definitely a failure because it’s not only a wonderful village but a great starting point for hikes 🥾. unfortunately we can’t stay longer because the casa is occupied and this evening we will move on to vallehermoso. as far as i have read it’s also very nice there. the villages here in the north are connected with comfortable busses 🚌. from here to vallehermoso for example, they go 5 times a day, mainly in the morning and the evening. so i’m looking forward to the bus drive this evening because it will be dark and i love driving serpentines trough high mountains ⛰ at night 🌜.Leia mais

  • Playa de Vallehermoso, Gomera, Spain

    7 de novembro de 2021, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

two abandoned places in one day? but let me start at the beginning...
today we went hiking along the valley abajo from vallehermoso to playa de vallehermoso and back. there are trails at the side of the valley as well as in the middle, so except for a small part you do not need to walk the same trail twice. somewhere in the middle of the valley after you passed banana, mango and avocado trees, you pass by an interesting concrete building which seems to have a big garden. so we decided to explore it on our way back and we found a wonderful botanical garden. the building belonged to david bramwell, professor for plant biodiversity. the garden was constructed in 2000 under the direction of the architect fernando menis. 1.86 million euro were invested in 16,219 square metre, plant species from five continents including plants from all the canary and endemic in la gomera were initially planted. the garden is now abandoned for years. in one hand, despite a broken window, the building is in an apparent good shape; on the other hand, the wildernesses cover most of the area and the green houses are destroyed.
but this is not the only abandoned building we found on our hike... on the cost we found the castillo del mar, a former banana loading station. since 1890, all goods on the island, mainly bananas, have been packed via the castillo del mar and then loaded onto the steamboats via the "pescante", a wooden structure that led over three basalt columns. in 1950 the trade via el castillo was stopped and the place was forgotten. the old coastal road was quickly buried by rubble and rocks, making it impassable. in 1981 thomas müller acquired the port facility, but since access was only possible by sea, first attempts at renovation failed. the construction phase began in 2001 and all the natural stone walls that were built as protective walls against both the sea and pirates were restored. a stage and two event rooms of different sizes were integrated. the castillo has been closed for several years due to financial problems and a lack of electricity.
for us it was definitely a nice adventure and a great hike.

  • Chorros de Epina, Gomera, Spain

    8 de novembro de 2021, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

today we went for an adventure. the actual plan was to go for a panoramic round hike from epina direction ermita de santa clara but i will come back to the hike later, first i will tell you about the adventure...
we started in vallehermose by bus and also planned to come back by bus since there is a bus stop directly at chorros de epina where the hike starts and ends. so after we finally finished the hike we waited for the bus to go back home but... 5min, 10min, 15min, 20min, no bus... after 20 minutes at the bus station it was getting quite cold in the chilly wind. i cursed myself because earlier i had sent a taxi away with the words: the bus is coming soon. what was the situation now? pitch black night, somewhere in the nowhere, only one house (closing restaurant) with a bus stop up on the hill, looooong serpentines down the valley, no bus and no cars….
    yeah well…
buuuuuut since i always carry a knife, a folding rule, a lighter and a *headlamp* we started to walk down the valley in the chilly wind *but* with my wonderful HEADLAMP until…
…i saw a car coming down the hill.... fortunately the car needed to reduce the speed because there was a small building site. actually the guy didn't want to stop but since in no time at all i opened my braid and hopped like a young deer towards the car, he had no choice 😜. it was a nice guy who lives in vallehermoso since 15 years and originally comes from germany. so this guy brought us home, he had a nice chat and we had a great hitchhike - the first since years. it was a *wonderful* adventure!
but maybe you want to have some information about the hike? weeeeeeell hardly any hike on la gomera offers such wonderful views and such easy paths as this pleasure tour from chorros de epina to ermita de santa clara. if the tour is too long for you, you can do without a detour to the chapel. the round takes about 4-5 hours, is 12-13 kilometers long and overcomes 710 vertical meters (depending on if you do the detour or not). but without the adventure it wouldn't even have been half the fun 😂.

  • Alto de Garajonay, Rother No.23, Gomera

    9 de novembro de 2021, Espanha ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

today's hike led us to the highest point on la gomera: the alto de garajonay. it is named after one of the most popular folklore stories from the canary islands: the legend of gara and jonay. the different versions tell the story between two young aborigines who end up committing suicide together in alto de garajonay.
the garajonay is not only the most visited, but also the best developed hiking destination on gomera, this quiet and atmospheric hiking trail leads in a leisurely, panoramic high-altitude hike to igualero, the highest village of gomera, and climbs from there to the summit of garajonay. the trail overcomes 700 vertical meters, is 12 kilometers long and it takes 4-5 hours. we drove there by bus and also took two busses back - although getting the right bus at the right time seems not to be *that* easy it worked out perfectly, meaning on our way back both busses were too late but for whatever reasons it matched 😜. so after some tapas in the bar central i'm laying in my bed now enjoying my day with *no* adventure 😂.

    10 de novembro de 2021, Espanha ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

firstly it turns out differently and secondly than you think 🤪. we actually wanted to take the bus to the laurel forest today, but after neither the first nor the second bus drove (fu**ing app), i enjoyed a cortado at the bar central first. gabi then decided on a rother tour, but i wanted to walk next to the well-worn rother for once. so i consulted the maps and then off i went. first i meandered along the villages and that took a lot longer than expected. here the bar owner involved me in a conversation, there the hotel owner. here the old woman chatted with me on the terrace while cleaning vegetables, there the grandpa while watering the garden. and everything in a strange mixture of english, french, spanish and german. GREAT! finally i left the villages behind and it went *really* uphill, that was the steepest tour so far and the descent had alpine qualities. without hiking poles i would have been lost. how lucky that i decided against rother i met no tourist on the tour, it seems like most of them consult such guides. luckily the tour was only 7 km long, but it was 600 meters up and down. without the chit-chats in the villages i would probably have done it in 3 hours, but that would only have been half the fun.Leia mais

  • Laurel forest, Gomera, Spain

    11 de novembro de 2021, Espanha ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

today we have been hiking in the laurel forest. we went there by cab and went mostly down for 1150 meters in altitude direction hermigua where we took the bus (!) back 😜. the trail was round about 9 km long and it took 3-4 hours.
the laurel forest (also called cloud forest) on la gomera is the largest contiguous evergreen wet forest in the world. a total of five different types of laurel and countless other plants and trees thrive there. the evergreen laurel trees and bushes can grow up to 30 meters. the densest laurel forests can be found predominantly on steep slopes - in almost inaccessible regions. when hiking through this forest one experiences different sensory impressions. for example, there is a moist but pleasant haze that has a relaxing and revitalizing effect. the laurel trees are covered with thick moss. meter-long lichen hang down from the branches of the trees, creating a fairytale jungle atmosphere. this are the forests where the spooky stories come from and i think i saw a troll...

  • Barraquito, Vallehermoso, Gomera, Spain

    12 de novembro de 2021, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

the barraquito is a multi-layered coffee liqueur drink normally served in a glass to enable easy viewing of the different layers. the layers normally consist of: coffee, licor 43, frothed milk, condensed milk, lemon peel and cinnamon. the condensed milk is first added, followed by the liqueur, espresso and lemon peel (in this order). milk is then added and cinnamon is sprinkled on top. the name stems from barraquito, a coffee liqueur commonly available on the canary islands, also known as zaperoco.
this coffee reminds me heavily of café asiático, which i got to know from my brother near cartagena. café asiático is a traditional drink that was invented in cartagena at the beginning of the 20th century. back then, sailors from asia liked to order a coffee with condensed milk and brandy when they arrived ashore.
in any way: it's for sure sweet but veeeeeery tasty and it was the right way to start this morning 🤪.

  • Time to relax, Gomera, Spain

    12 de novembro de 2021, Espanha ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

yesterday evening i packed my things, bought some bottles of red wine 🍷, olives 🫒 and cheese 🧀 and today we took to boat 🚤 to finca argayall. the idea is to chill out at the sea, relax, drink the wine while eating the olives and the cheese while listening to (loud) music. so i was curious about this place and i did not fully make up my mind yet. but first things first: the food is awesome - breakfast, lunch and dinner is included. until now we only had lunch and is was soooo tasty. they have different ready made tea (ginger, ayuverdian, black, green, and, and, and). freshly made mango juice is always available and it’s real juice, not the one they stretch with water. also tropical fruit is laying around… the garden is lovely and very special - they grow lots of things themselves. everywhere you find another hidden place with chairs 🪑 , hammock, pool 🏊🏼‍♀️ or deck chair. they offer yoga and meditation 🧘🏻‍♀️ 3 times a day and you can join whenever you like.
so let’s see how that works out 😜 - maybe i will get in trouble with the music, but we have our own space - well but we have neighbors…. i will keep you posted 🤪 - at the moment i‘m listening to fadoul (sid redad) but the neighbors are not here yet 🤣.

  • Playa de Las Arenas, Gomera, Spain

    14 de novembro de 2021, Espanha ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

this is the legendary gomerian „schweinebucht“ (google it)… it’s around the corner - really around the corner - this means you have to climb some steep, sharp, lava rock hill.
after lunch and before „free dance“ we had some time so i said „hey gabi, let’s check that out“. no towel, so suit, no… shoes… well at least me - i only had my flip flops. but since i’ve travelled the world in flip flops (in norway they made fun of me „gina, will you also climb the glacier in flip flops?“) i was sure that this should work out. and…
    …it did 😛.
it is a wonderful beach with pitch black sand. the waves 🌊 are amazing: rumbling, enormous and violent. i haven’t had so much fun in the water for quite some time but you really have to be carful and submerge the waves or they will catch you and won’t let you go for a while - possibly toss you on a stone. so this is concentrated wave fight/flowing and not swimming. what a beach, what an adventure and what a day ❤️❤️❤️.

fortunately gabi took her kamera, so thanks to gabi, there are some wonderful pics ❤️.

  • Flower power, Gomera, Spain

    16 de novembro de 2021, Espanha ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

it’s wonderful to meet good old friends all over the world. i think my best flower friend is the datura - she grows on my balcony as well as in the garden of my second home in reinbek. yesterday evening when i was strolling the garden here in the finca she greeted me with her well known evening and night smell - i never want to live without that smell again.
this is a really funny feeling… you travel the world and end up somewhere, somewhen in a totally different place and walk along some unknown path and suddenly, from one second to another, you feel at home because there is this smell. how wonderful is that? so dear sense of smell, i want to thank you, you are one if my best companions!
actually this also works with me when i smell chinese kitchen smells, because i used to live with a chinese family for 6 years 🤣.

  • Contemplation, Gomera, Spain

    18 de novembro de 2021, Espanha ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

since some days i arrived here in the finca and filled my days with sun ☀️ , ocean 🌊 , swimming 🏊🏼‍♀️ , yoga 🧘🏻‍♀️ , meditation, drawing 🎨, listening to music 🎼 & fruit 🥭. sometimes i left the area of the finca but only once i went to the village, the rest of the time i went the other direction where no people live. and since there has been a land slide a year ago, the road which connects the finca to the harbour/village is impassable by car, as you can see on one of the pictures. so people can only arrive by boat or climb the hill and since the beach is rocky and the waves are seldom as peaceful as today, i‘m here in a different kind of lockdown. i can see the harbour wall and the boats but the ocean separates us - overcoming this distance means to have the right weather or to climb a hill. this made theses days especially calm and wonderful peaceful and i needed to put this feelings into a new drawing - i hope you like it - if i’ll come back this will be the basis for my next postcard…Leia mais
