Some rare times a do not want to travel

    October 3, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

Today I have to go "home" in the Black Forest for four days.

Have to? Yes, have to. And I have absolutely no desire to do so, because I was just so looking forward to an autumn weekend in the leaves and in front of the roaring stove with my sweetheart.

But no, now I have to travel again. Yes, I know that this is complaining at a high level. 😉

Why I have to travel? I'll tell you when I get there and have checked the situation tomorrow and know how big the shock is - or whether I'm even shocked at all. 🤪

    Table service?!?

    October 3, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

I just arrived at the main station a little early and decided to get a coffee. Campus Suite, Backwerk, Schweinske - I was spoiled for choice. 🙄

I couldn't decide and as is the case with me when I can't decide: skipped action 🐔. Oooh what pretty colorful balloons! 🎈🎈🎈

    McDonald's? McDonald's?!?
I found the concept so interesting that I had to take a look... 👀

The order monitors have been around for a long time, the usability is really good. What's new is that I'm asked if I want a deposit cup or disposable cup and if I want to pick up the food myself or table service. Please? Table service? 😳 Yes, table service. 💁

The tables have numbers 🔢 and if you choose table service, you have to give your table number, which is then delivered to. The whole thing seems very calm, organized, friendly and not at all like fast food. Well, the food is of course the same. 🤢

Embarrassingly, I have to admit that it was a good ❤️ service experience. I'm excited to see if it lasts...

    Problems, problems, problems

    October 4, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

I promised you today that I would tell you what I actually do here in the Black Forest.

Ten years ago, I took over our family's old farmhouse. Not the whole part, but half of two houses, so roughly one. The rest belongs to my cousin and my aunt.

That means I have two apartments here of about 120m² each, both of which are rented out. One of them is a so-called luxury renovation, which means I built this apartment from scratch (it was the attic) and only used high-quality natural materials.

The first tenants lived in the apartment for five years and the apartment still looked great afterwards. The second tenants have now lived in it for six years and when I arrived yesterday, I got a huge shock. It is the first time I have lived in this apartment and I brought my camping equipment and got an air bed.

Air bed? Lucky me that my brother and my sister in law brought me this air bed over ❤️ - so I can sleep here and start working straight away!

The apartment is completely filthy, the walls are very badly painted and the floor is ruined. Today the apartment was handed over and that was not an easy matter. I'll write to you tomorrow about the solution we found and show you what the apartment will look like again. Today I definitely had a marathon day a with real estate agent, tradesmen for renovation, ex-tenant, insurance agent and flooring specialist. But now I've had enough...

    Solitions, solutions, solutions

    October 5, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

I have found a few solutions. What luck!

Yesterday, after the handover of the apartment at 10:00 a.m., I was able to set some course.

    1. The floor fitter was there at 1:00 p.m., he took measurements and will make a cost estimate for replacing the floor.
    2. My former tenant will submit this to his private liability insurance, together with the broken window.
    3. The replacement for the broken window is already scheduled.
    4. The insurance agent was there at 12. The insurance agent will make an appointment with the appraiser for the floor. He has a key for this and for the installation of the window.
    5. The real estate agent was here and also has the second key.
    6. On Sunday, viewings will take place with two prospective tenants.
    7. The real estate agent will do further viewings if no one suitable is available on Sunday.
    8. My old friend Jo has the third key and will paint everything, replace the joints and clean everything. This will be deducted from the deposit.

If the insurance pays, the money will be invested and the floor will then be replaced as planned when the next tenant changes.
Today I have to clean the shower and bathroom, Jo will clean the kitchen - praised be Jo! ❤️ And tomorrow he will bring a vacuum cleaner and vacuum and mop before the viewing.

Now don't ask me how I managed to spontaneously get a floor fitter and insurance agent on the bridge day, or why the two interested parties have time on the Sunday before I leave. I guess I was pretty lucky!

Let’s hope I get away with just a black eye.

    Work done

    October 6, 2024 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

I did what I could in the short time and today the apartment was ready for the prospective tenants at 1:30 p.m.

It still needs to be painted and a few silicone joints need to be replaced, but the apartment looked attractive enough to view, and it was communicated that it would be renovated. There was a young couple there who I really liked, let's see if they take the apartment. Otherwise the real estate agent will continue to look for tenants and I am confident that we can rent the floor even with the stains.

In any case, I'm pretty exhausted now, my hands and arms hurt like hell and I can't remember the last time I scrubbed like that. Luckily Jo helped me! ❤️

Now I'm sitting in Basel waiting for the train. Phew - done! 💪

    Basel Bad Bf

    October 6, 2024 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

As I’m sitting in the train now until tomorrow morning 1 a.m. I have quite some time to write some stuff 🤪.

I don't know if you know this, but Basel, where I entered the train, has train stations for three nationalities. Swiss, of course, but also German and French.

The Swiss and French are in the same building on the left bank of the Rhine, the station is called Basel SBB. The German station is on the right bank and is called Basel Badischer Bshnhof. If I take the S-Bahn to my house in my valley, the Wiesental, I have to change trains. In doing so, I don't set foot on Swiss soil.

    What? 😱
But the station is in Basel, and Basel is in Switzerland. 🤔
Yes, but this little piece of land on which this station stands is German territory, right in the middle of Basel. 🤓

Funny, isn't it? So I don't have to cross the border and am even in Europe, even though I'm outside of Europe✌🏽
Besides that: It was a great opportunity to grow up in a border triangle. ❤️

    15 minutes early?!?

    October 7, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Arriving 15 minutes earlier? With the German railway? This is definitely some kind of wonder. 😯

Anyway it's too late for the normal bus but I can catch a night bus 🌜🚌 in 10 minutes and it's the same line.

So: Welcome to Hamburg. The odyssey is over - fortunately! I need to go to sleep - immediately 😴.
