  • Steinsdalsfossen, Norway

    3 août 2021, Norvège ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

the steinsdalsfossen is a bit like a drive-in waterfall 😉 but if you're on your way to bergen take a stop here, take a snack, a small walk, maybe a short dip in the waterfall and enjoy the tractor 🚜 passing by. one thing is unusual: you can walk under the waterfalll 💧...En savoir plus

  • Sørfjorden & Osterøybrua, Norway

    3 août 2021, Norvège ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

it's not that easy to get a glimpse of the sørfjorden 😥. you drive along this fjord on the way to bergen but the norwegians obviously love swiss cheese 🧀. all mountains are perforated with tunnels - it's like swiss-cheese-o-mania... and i was born in rheinfelden, which is half swiss, half german so i love swiss cheese AND tunnels 🤪. but i managed to get a glimpse of this "last" fjord and this is important because... now we've almost reached north sea 😍.En savoir plus

  • Street art, Bergen, Norway

    4 août 2021, Norvège ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

when in june 2017 bergens 65-year-old record for rain was broken, state meteorologist steinar skare was asked if he was surprised. his answer: "i think we all know where we live." however, reducing bergen to its weather would be unfair if it also affects everyday life. a side effect: the density of cozy cafés and pubs is as high and the art and music scene as good as it is only in a city in which its residents have to spend a lot of time indoors. bergen has the cultural scene of a metropolis of millions - diverse, colorful and surprising. so you can find a lot of street art - sometimes also in wonderful weather 😉.En savoir plus

    4 août 2021, Norvège ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

i love fish 🐟 markets... in every port city i *definitely* check out the fish market! believe me: the one in bergen is the cleanest, best organized and best smelling one i've ever visited. everything is very accurately arranged and it's not very big. you can't compare it with e.g. italian fish markets. it's clean, calm and not chaotic. nevertheless you should visit it - especially in covid times i appreciate that...En savoir plus

  • Bergen, Norway

    4 août 2021, Norvège ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

bergen, historically bjørgvin, is a city on the west coast of norway. as of 2021, its population is roughly 285 900 and it is the second-largest city in norway. the city centre and northern neighbourhoods are on byfjorden, "the city fjord", and the city is surrounded by mountains. bergen is known as the "city of seven mountains". this is the reason why it rains so much here - the water condenses and the clouds hang in front of the mountains. you can take a small mountain train called "fløibanen" and go up the hill to get an overview over the whole area - it's an touristic attraction but worth it.
i like ❤️ bergen - in short: it is a calm, creative port city with lots of colorful houses. and fortunately i visited it in best weather conditions 😍.

  • Vosso, Norway

    5 août 2021, Norvège ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

    mirror lakes all over!!!
the river vosso connects some lakes, which are really great "mirror lakes" 🤪. due to the mountains ⛰️ around these lakes the air is very calm from time to time - then the lakes lay flat as a mirror 🪞. i love ❤️ it...
so although you might be a bit spoiles by all those fjords 😉, driving along the vosso is worth it. the vosso starts at tvildemoen, vossevangen, where the two rivers strandaelvi and raundalselvi meet. it continues through the lake vangsvatnet and evangervatnet before ending in the bolstadfjord at bolstadøyri. between evangervatnet and the bolstadfjorden the river is also called bolstadelvi.
    so: give it a chance!

  • Stalheim Hotel, Vossestrand, Norway

    5 août 2021, Norvège ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

what a view from the lounge & balcony... and inside it seems like time stood still...
the stalheim hotel is located 36 km east of voss and was first opened on 15 May 1885 with 10 single rooms. it burned down in 1900 and was rebuilt, a new fire in 1902 destroyed it once more. in 1906-07 the meinhardts hotel in voss was demolished and moved to stalheim, as the third hotel on the site. some years later, the entire hotel was moved 37 m towards the abyss and expanded with a large new wing.
during wwII in 1943, the german organization lebensborn established the stalheim orphanage at the stalheim tourist hotel with one hundred child places. in 1959, the hotel burned down for the third time. this time, 23 people died in the explosive fire, better known as the stalheim fire. the current hotel was built in 1960, expanded in 1966, and now has 124 rooms and space for 218 guests.
walking around the hotel felt like time-traveling 😍

the stalheimskleiva is a spectacular 1.5 km long road that meanders down the steep mountain from the hotel stalheim with 13 hairpin bends.
it offers a fantastic view of the nærøydalen valley, which was (together with the Nærøyfjord) added to the UNESCO world heritage list in 2004. at the moment the road is closed because a sepentine broke off and is being repaired. so you have to walk - although it is also forbidden for pedestrians, it is possible with a little bit of climbing... . when it was still open to traffic, it was a one-way street that could only be traveled from top to bottom. stahlheimskleiva is one of the steepest roads in northern europe and has a gradient of 20%. on the way you have great views of the 126 meter high stalheim and the 142 meter high sivle waterfalls.En savoir plus

  • Future of the Fjords, Undredal, Norway

    6 août 2021, Norvège ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

today i was sittig at the aurlandsfjord and suddenly a catamaran approached - it was *really* weird because it made NO noise. it was the "future of the fjords", a new 40m long and 15m wide, all-electric sightseeing catamaran built by brødrene aa for norwegian marine transportation company. it can accommodate up to 400 tourists and became operational in may 2018. the vessel was built using lightweight carbon-fibre composite materials to reduce energy consumption, as well as the power and battery capacities. the hull and superstructures feature lightweight carbon sandwich laminates, resulting in approximately 50% weight reduction. the catamaran design also reduces waves and washes on the exposed shores of the narrow fjords.
the catamaran vessel is powered by two electric motors driving propellers through two gearboxes. each electric motor is able to generate a power output of 450kW at 1,180rpm. the compact propeller has a diameter of 1,475mm, while the diameter of the propeller shaft is approximately 100mm. The propulsion system reduces noise and vibrations, NOx and CO₂ emissions while improving fuel efficiency. the advanced charging station is capable of charging the batteries with approximately 800kWh of power during the 20-minute docking period. the propulsion system enables the vessel to sail at a cruise speed of 16k.

  • Undredal, Norway

    6 août 2021, Norvège ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

undredal is a small village located at the aurlandsfjorden which is a branch off the massive sognefjorden in norway's "fjord-country." it's a veeeery cozy location ❤️ - you can hike along the fjord, sit at the fjord and watch the porpoises 🐬 or enjoy some goat cheese 🐐🧀 in the "kafe ost" at the "undredal brygge". well you can also take a "bath" in the 🐐 goats as you can see in the footage 🤪.
with a population of 100 people and 500 goats, undredal is famous for the brown goat cheese (geitost) that is still produced the traditional way. prior to 1988, undredal was only accessible by boat, but since then a road connection has been made by constructing two lengthy tunnels.

  • Aurlandsfjord & Sognefjorden, Norway

    6 août 2021, Norvège ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

do you know slartibartfast? today we drove along one of the fjords designed by slartibartfast. slartibartfast is a designer of planets. his favourite part of the job is creating coastlines, the most notable of which are the fjords found on the coast of norway on planet earth for which he won an award. you can find slartibartfast's signature deep inside a glacier in ancient norway.
if i've lost you know 🤪, i have to explain... slartibartfast is a character in "the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy", a comedy/science fiction series created by douglas adams.
so on the pictures you can see slartibartfast's aurlandsfjord 😉, which is a 29-kilometre long fjord and a branch off of the main sognefjorden, norway's longest fjord. the fjord is deep and narrow, reaching a depth of about 962 metre and its width is generally less than 2 kilometres wide. about 11 kilometers south of the mouth of the fjord, the nærøyfjord branches off from it to the west. the village of flåm sits at the innermost part of the aurlandsfjord; other villages along the fjord are aurlandsvangen and undredal. most of the fjord is surrounded by up to 1,800-metre tall, steep mountains with little habitation along the fjord except for in a few small valleys.

  • Nigardsbreen/Jostedalsbreen Glacier

    8 août 2021, Norvège ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

today i went hiking on the nigardsbreen glacier - but before i tell you something about that glacier, i will tell you why glacier ice is blue...
glacier ice is blue because of its density. light consists of all colors but the the red (long wavelengths) part of white light is absorbed by this ice and the blue (short wavelengths) light is transmitted and scattered. The longer the path light travels in this ice, the more blue it appears. if you cut out ice cubes, they do not appear blue any more.
so now more about the nigardsbreen.... this is a glacier arm of the large jostedalsbreen glacier, which is the largest glacier in continental europe. nigardsbreen lies about 30 kilometres north of the village of gaupne in the jostedalen valley.
the glaciers of norway are not to be seen as relics of the ice age. during a postglacial warm period, the entire area became ice-free, so that the glaciers formed during the ice age had melted. in the subatlantic (approx. 500 bc) there was a deterioration in the climate. this was marked by a drop in the snow line. therefore today's glaciers originate from this period. the tip of the *glacier tongue" you can see on the picture is round about 700 years old.
since 1899, the behavior of the nigardsbreen is observed. from 1899 to 1972 the glacier retreated 2.4 km. dince the mid-1970s, however, a decrease in the return rate was observed. grom 1975 to 1989 there were only minimal changes in the glacier length. from 1990 to 2000, a push behavior showed, the glacier grew by 250 m. then return movements were recorded again. from 2000 to 2010, the glacier retreated by about 100 meters, from 2010 to 2016 by 250 m. In the heat summer 2018 melted the glacier over 100 m.

  • Lom Stave Church, Norway

    9 août 2021, Norvège ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

    dragons!!! 🐲🐉
this is the stave church in lom. it is actually one of just a very few stave churches of which the original medieval crest with a dragon head still survives.
lom itself is situated in the traditional district of gudbrandsdal, where the gudbrandsdalsost stems from. a cheese made from cow whey, cream, cow milk and about 10% goat milk. the cheese has a delicate brown color and a distinct aftertaste of caramel, which results from the special manufacturing process and it tasts awful 🤮. at least one thing norwegians are bad at...
but now back to the church... it dates to approximately second part of 12th century. it was rebuilt into a cruciform church during the 17th century, which gave it the appearance it has retained since. a complete restoration also took place in 1933. an archaeological excavation was conducted in 1973 in connection with the repair of the floors. the excavations uncovered artifacts including more than 2,000 coins.

today is my spa-day. everybody else is on sightseeing but i decided that there is no need for a touristic day in oslo. i already visited the town some years ago. that does not mean that olso is not worth several visits, it's a very interesting town. but a day on my own with lake view, luxury showers, fresh juice and a good book... i prefer that and skip leisure stress 🤪. so no architectural highlights, street cafés or picturesque houses today for you, only boring books... but i can recommend the latest two i read: "herr aller dinge" from andreas eschbach and "achtsam morden" vom karsten dusse.En savoir plus
