  • Šolta, I'm coming!

    14. September 2024 in Kroatien ⋅ 🌬 20 °C

Barbara picked me from the bus - it is soooo nice to see her again after 1,5 years ❤️.

So the time on the ferry passed like a flash by chit-chatting and updating each other.

  • Cloudy

    15. September 2024 in Kroatien ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

    Today it is cloudy.

I am not surprised because I have read that it is raining non-stop in Austria, the Czech Republic and Poland.

Here it is just the trough of low pressure and I can observe the clouds above the horizon.

There is also quite a bit of wind, but the temperatures and the view of the sea make up for it.

  • Swimming first

    16. September 2024 in Kroatien ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

After I had a nice Darjeeling in bed this morning and read a bit, it was time to get up.

At first I thought that an hour of yoga would be the right decision. But then I decided to go swimming first.

That was a great idea. The sea is still wonderfully warm and the sun is very pleasant at 10 a.m.

I'll just do my yoga after swimming and then have breakfast. Today will be a good day!

  • Power outage

    17. September 2024 in Kroatien ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

It started at 8:30 a.m. and will probably last until 3 p.m. - power outage.

I was just downstairs in the village cafe and they said that the power might be back on as early as 12 or 1. But the landlord has a gas stove and left a pot of peppermint tea on the stairs - how sweet is that?

Now I'm sitting comfortably on the balcony and everything is incredibly quiet, no power, drinking peppermint tea and enjoying the view. 🤗

  • Markets & food

    18. September 2024 in Kroatien ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

First we went to the markets. I bought some delicious figs and börek & pastries from one of the sellers and then we had pistachio ice cream and an iced coffee.

Unfortunately the fish market was already closed but we discovered some wonderfully designed restaurants in the many small streets of Split.

I really liked the streets and I can well imagine how nice and refreshing it can be to find some cooling in these streets during the hot season.

  • Old town of Split

    18. September 2024 in Kroatien ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Split is the second largest city in Croatia and is popularly known as the "capital of Dalmatia".

The city had a population of around 180,000 in 2011, which was almost 4% of the entire population of Croatia. Split is an important port city and the city's origins can be traced back to Diocletian's Palace.

The city center of Split, including Diocletian's Palace, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. It is located on the south coast of the Split peninsula and is formed by the old Diocletian's Palace, from which the city developed, and the medieval city extension to the west.

Directly on the sea along the harbor bay in the old town lies the Riva, a promenade that is probably the most famous landmark of the city.

The old town is manageable and very easy to explore on foot. There are a few tourists at this time of year, but not so many that there is no place to sit in a café.

All in all, it is a small, winding, clean old town that is beautifully designed and, with the Riva, really offers a little gem. I would definitely not stay in Split for too long, but it is perfect for a day trip

  • Stomorska

    19. September 2024 in Kroatien ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Today, it’s raining and so I will tell you something about the village I stay in.

Stomorska is a small village on the island of Šolta, and it immediately felt like I had stepped into another world. Stomorska, one of the oldest ports on the island, is a charming little place nestled along a bay, surrounded by crystal-clear turquoise waters and traditional stone houses. The village’s relaxed atmosphere, with its fishing boats swaying gently in the harbor, instantly made me feel at ease.

Šolta is a relatively small island, just a short ferry ride from Split, yet it feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the mainland. It’s a perfect escape for anyone looking for a quieter, more authentic Croatian experience. Unlike the more touristic spots like Hvar or Brač, Šolta retains a sense of peace, with its untouched landscapes, olive groves, and vineyards that stretch as far as the eye can see.

Some days ago I was wandering through the narrow streets of Stomorska, admiring the old stone buildings with their red-tiled roofs and the colorful flowers spilling out of windowsills. The village has a long history, originally founded as a fishing port, and you can still feel that connection to the sea today. Watching the local fishermen unload their daily catch made me realize how closely tied the community is to the rhythms of the Adriatic.

Stomorska has several small beaches, and I found a quiet spot where I could swim in the clear, calm sea. The water here is so clean and refreshing - it’s like swimming in a natural pool.

When the sun sets, Stomorska transforms into an even more magical place. The colors of the sky reflects in the water, and the village lights up with a soft, golden glow. Then I sit on my balcony by the harbor, sipping a glass of local wine, watching as the boats coming in for the evening. There’s something truly special about the simplicity of life here.

Šolta might not be as famous as some of Croatia's other islands, but that’s exactly what makes it so special. It’s a place where you can slow down, connect with nature, and experience the traditional Croatian island life at its finest. In short: good choice!

  • Good morning Croatia

    20. September 2024 in Kroatien ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

    Good morning Croatia!

The roosters are crowing, the sun is shining, the view of the harbor is great. I'm sitting on my round balcony and once again my landlord has put a peppermint tea on the steps for me. Once again? Why is that?

Well, *another* power outage and once again three quarters of the day. Once again no tea since I use power for my stove and he gas. Welcome to Croatia 🤣. Well, I thought, then this is a perfect day for a scooter tour around the island. I called the scooter rental company and asked how much a 125cc costs per day: €80. Welcome to Croatia 🤣.

Sorry, you can keep it - I'm going swimming 🏊, hiking 🥾 and doing yoga. 🧘🏾

  • Over the hill

    20. September 2024 in Kroatien ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Today I hiked up into the hills above Stomorska, where the views were absolutely breathtaking. From the top, I could see not only the entire bay but also the neighboring islands in the distance. The combination of blue sea, green hills, and scattered stone houses created a picture-perfect landscape.

The original idea was to access my favorite bay from the other side - that didn't quite work out 🤪, but the view was great.
