Some pictures from the descent. It didn't take very long at all; I guess it really helps when it's downhill the whole way! At the bottom you emerge in a river bed with incredible views of the Triglav massif. And just as one beautiful river ended yesterday, another starts, as the crystal waters of the Pisnica lead to Jasna lake.

Ruska kapelica is a traditional chapel I passed on the way down. It was built by Russian prisoners of war in 1915, the same prisoners who built the Vrsic pass road. They were held here by Austro-Hungarians.Leia mais

And here we are, it's a sad goodbye to the Soca river; its source just as incredible as the rest of it. A shimmy along the rocks takes you to a luminescent blue spring in an enchanting cave.

In spite of my numbheadedness in not realising every supermarket would be closed on a Sunday, I've made it to Kamp Triglav, on nothing other than a pack of tower gate's finest digestive biscuits.

Triglav, the name of this campsite, refers to the tallest mountain in the Julian Alps at 2863m; it's a symbol of Slovene national pride and its summit is fewer than 5 miles away.

Soca is just a dispersed settlement throughout this particular valley, but it feels like a good name to whack down a footprint from this morning, which has been so good! It's so so much easier hiking at this temperature, peaking at ~25°C rather than at 34°C from before. The walking has felt magical, through mossy forests alongside the river which exudes an almost electric blue in places.Leia mais

Much of today was spent in Bovec (pronounced Bovetz). It was nice to have a relaxed day and only cough up mild quantities of phlegm. I even then got back in time to see the mighty Bournemouth win the first Premier League game of the season, or at least to see most of it (when friendly dormmate Londoners Hayley and Sula weren't trying to talk to me, so rude)

The weather finally broke! And thank goodness too, it was great to feel the pitter patter of grey matter (that is a brilliant jokette). But seriously, from all the countries I've visited lately, you can tell they've all been dealing with some pretty serious drought, and I think it's still very pretty, and moody amongst the clouds.

It did take me a while to get going for today, which is largely being used for rest, and hopefully for shaking off this weird illness.Leia mais

After a lengthy but enjoyable time walking along the river, I decided to call it a day at Srpenica. Not long after the bus was delayed (it is the Balkans after all), I quickly found a ride into Bovec thanks to hitchhiking with lovely Parisian couple Bertrand and Roxanne.

Whilst it's sad I missed out on a couple of attractions from what would've been the rest of the walk, it's probably important that I treat this as a holiday and not a mission like the coast path. Trekking another 10 km or so in the current conditions wouldn't have been much fun. Devouring 9 ice lollies in a Bovec park, however....Leia mais

Truth be told, I didn't quite go into Trnovo, I just needed a name for this footprint. I've been following the Juliana trail today, which undulates along the banks of the Soca for its entirety. It's been difficult work in this heat, and I might not make Bovec today, but I can always catch a bus onto there seeing how I progress later in the day. There are some fun wobbly bridges spanning the river, and on one of them I met a friendly Polish couple who took a Polaroid of me. Also been for a brief dip again too.Leia mais

After an uncomfortable night with illness, I made my way to a pharmacy and popped some pills this morning. My day had hardly got started when I stepped out onto the trail and was quickly reminded of the surroundings. There are plenty of preserved reminders of war littering this area. Wow Kobarid is an incredibly beautiful place; England just doesn't compare. It's hard to believe that 12 battles took place here in 29 months during World War One, as well as the town hosting the site of a mass grave from the Second World War.

I just wish it weren't so unbearably hot 🥵

So far today I've been following a stage of the Alpe Adria trail, which actually stretches from Austria's highest peak, Grossglockner, all the way to the Adriatic. On the ascent up to the first viewpoint, I was tempted to turn back and follow the easier Juliana trail through the valley, but I hate the feeling of getting to the end of the day and knowing you've taken the easiest choice. So in spite of the peak 33°C heat, coming down with some sort of snotty illness overnight, having dead powerbanks, uncomfortable encounters with two large black snakes, and hauling all my gear, I have ascended up about 700m to the village of Krn, in the shadow of its namesake mountain, which is somehow a further 1400m up.Leia mais
