Devils Marbles

North of Coober Pedy is nothing else than red dirt. "Highlights" of the day were crossing the dingo fence 38km north of Coober Pedy, crossing the border to the Northern Territory (490km) and leaving Alice Springs (690km). As Alice Springs is not a place we wanted to stay any longer than necessary we just fueled up and continued another 100km into the outback before we stopped for the night.

The next day was our longest: 1000km to Mataranka! At least this time we had a nice stop at the Devil Marbles in between. The Devils Marbles are some huge rocks lying around in the middle of nowhere. A nice stop for a walk and to camp, but we decided t continue all the way to Mataranka.

Nördlich von Coober Pedy gibt es abgesehen von roter Erde nicht viel. Highlights der Route sind dann schon der Dingo Zaun (mit 5614km das größte ununterbrochene Bauwerk der Welt) 38km von Coober Pedy, gefolgt von der Grenze zwischen dem Northern Territory und South Australia (490km) und dann die Stadt Alice Springs. Allerdings ist Alice Springs einer dieser Orte an denen man nicht länger als unbedingt notwendig bleiben möchte. So gab es für uns nur neues Benzin und ein warmes Essen bevor wir weitere 100km ins Outback zum Zelten gefahren sind.

Der nächste Tag startete für uns mit Sonnenaufgang denn es sollte der längste Tag werden. Auf dem optimistischen Plan standen 1000km bis nach Mataranka (im Outback können wir nur bei Tageslicht fahren, ansonsten wird es zu gefährlich). Auf dem Weg kamen wir dann an den Devils Marbles vorbei, ein paar riesige Steine die mitten im Outback herumliegen. Jedenfalls ein guter Stop für eine kurze Wanderung, bevor es dann schnell weiter ging in Richtung Mataranka.Read more
