Umpherston Sinkhole

The area around Mt Gambier is home to 95% of all sinkholes in Australia. The coast consists of dominantly soft limestone and millions of years ago the entire area was under water. Over time the oceans currents formed large caves. Some of them collapsed and the sinkholes were born. With that many of them around people had to get creative and in the process beautiful cave gardens were build. Other sinkholes are filled with water and are used either as swimming holes or as water source on private farm land.

Die Gegend um Mt Gambier besteht überwiegend aus Kalkstein und war vor Tausenden von Jahren unterhalb des Meeresspiegels. Dadurch sind Aushöhlungen entstanden, die wir heutzutage als Höhlen oder Sinklöcher bestaunen können. Hier in Mt Gambier befinden sich 95% aller Kalksteinhöhlen Australiens.
