    Historic port of Lavrion

    I'm staying for a couple nights in the port of Lavrion. Lavrion is currently used as a departure port for several cycladic islands. But it's history goes much farther back. It boasts the oldest known silver mines from prehistoric times. Also, the marble columns for the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion were mined here. The Lavrion silver mines financed the building of the Parthenon and also the Athenian fleets that defeated the Persians.Read more
