    Historic port of Lavrion

    I'm staying for a couple nights in the port of Lavrion. Lavrion is currently used as a departure port for several cycladic islands. But it's history goes much farther back. It boasts the oldest known silver mines from prehistoric times. Also, the marble columns for the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion were mined here. The Lavrion silver mines financed the building of the Parthenon and also the Athenian fleets that defeated the Persians.Leia mais

  • Staying on a boat in Lavrion!

    I will be staying on a catamaran for a couple days during my stay in Lavrion. It is interesting seeing the boat charter industry at work. Clients arrive at the port via taxi from the airport, usually, and stay on their chartered boats for a night before sailing off to islands. Much of the local port economy seems to be geared towards tourism and the charter season. There are restaurants, bars, markets, and a department store where tourists can prepare for their week at sea. I will remain in port this time, but I will see the islands by plane.Leia mais

  • Lavrion archaeological museum

    This small museum in the main town of Lavrion houses some fascinating artifacts. Some of the artifacts date back to 40000 bc, the Paleolithic era. Much of the exhibition details the ancient mining history of the area. Apparently the surrounding area has some 50 km of tunnel underneath the surface. The area was mined primarily for silver, but also other minerals and marble.Leia mais
