Heute startet Tag 1 der Wanderung von Quetzaltenango (alias Xela), der 2. größten Stadt Guatemalas zu einem der schönsten Seen der Welt, Lake Atitlan.

Quetzaltrekkers, die Organisation mit der wir die Tour machen, ist eine Non-Profit Organisation, deren Erlöse in soziale Projekte für Kinder in Xela und Umgebung fließen. Wir waren eine Gruppe von 9 Leuten aus 8 verschiedenen Ländern (Kanada, USA, Australian, Niederlande, Ungarn, Dänemark, Deutschland), davon 2 Guides die als freiwillige in der Organisation arbeiten.

Am ersten Tag sind wir von 8:00 Uhr - 15:30 Uhr knappe 17 km durch atemberaubende Landschaften und ländliche Dörfer gewandert. Fast alle einheimischen hier leben von Maisanbau und etwas Viehwirtschaft. Jeder Quadratmeter in den Dörfern war gefühlt bewachsen mit Mais.
In dem Frontalbild von mir sieht man rechts im Hintergrund den größten Berg Mittelamerikas , der Vulkan Tajumulco (4220 m). Am Ende haben wir in einem kleinen Häuschen einer Privatfamilie geschlafen und durften die typische mesoamerikanische Saune benutzen, eine sogenannte Temazcal. Das ist ein kleines Lehmhäuschen mit einer Feuerstelle im inneren, in dem ein rießen Wassertank erhitzt wird. Hat sich angefühlt wie in einem Pizzaofen zu hocken :D

Today starts day 1 of the trek from Quetzaltenango (aka Xela), the 2nd largest city in Guatemala to one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, Lake Atitlan.

Quetzaltrekkers, the organisation we are doing the tour with, is a non-profit organisation whose proceeds go to social projects for children in Xela and the surrounding area. We were a group of 9 people from 8 different countries (Canada, USA, Australia, Netherlands, Hungary, Denmark, Germany), including 2 guides who work as volunteers for the organisation.

On the first day we hiked 17 km from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm through stunning landscapes and rural villages. Almost all the local people here live from maize cultivation and some livestock farming. Every square metre in the villages was covered with maize. In the frontal picture of me you can see in the background on the right the biggest mountain in Central America , the volcano Tajumulco (4220 m). At the end we slept in a small house of a private family and were allowed to use the typical Mesoamerican sauna, a so-called temazcal. This is a small adobe house with a fireplace inside, in which a huge water tank is heated. It felt like sitting in a pizza oven :DLeer más
