4am - Leaving Novato

Trystan is the GOAT! He's bringing me to the airport at this ungodly hour.
My favorite airport

It's my first time to use Charles Schultz Airport in Santa Rosa, but it's instantly my favorite airport. It's tiny. 10 minutes from car to gate.
Charles Schultz was the creator of Snoopy and theRead more
Arrived in Seattle

It must look like I'm having a midlife crisis. They "upgraded" me to a Dodge Challenger.
Olympic National Park - Peabody Crk Loop

Olympic National Park - Hurricane Ridge

Took Bainbridge Ferry back to Seattle

Just to get a break from driving for 30 minutes. I'm bringing the car back to the airport, then getting an Uber back to my room.
Boarding the boat

It's all been pretty much like boarding a flight, except slower and a bit disorganized. I've parted company with my luggage. Gone through TSA-like security. Had a passport check. Now I'm in a hugeRead more
Day 0 - Coffee and a view of Seattle

I had lunch on board too, at the same seat. Everybody on board is waiting for their cabins to be made available, so everything is very crowded.
I've had the outside to myself and a couple of others,Read more
Mount Rainier has made an appearance

Returning the pilot to his vessel

We had a pilot on board to help guide the cruise ship through some straits. I filmed him returning to his vessel.
The Northern lights from up North

Finally the lights appeared. Very difficult to take a good picture on a moving ship.
Trip update

The captain announced some dramatic changes to our itinerary tonight. Our first stop will no longer be Sitka, indeed we won't be traveling there at all. Instead we're going directly to Ketchikan, andRead more
Day 1 - Fog and fog horns this morning

It's still dark, but this does not bode well for enjoying the scenery.
Oh well, a reading day I guess 🤔
Day 1 - First views

We're sailing up the Inner Passage. Vancouver Island to the west, the rest of British Columbia to the East. There seem to be farms on the different islands. I'm looking out for bears, eagles andRead more
My office today

Why do good things keep happening to me?
Day 1 - Heading out to sea now

It's starting to get a bit choppy almost immediately. A few pictures of the inner passage. I did see a whale, but it was too far for a decent shot.
New update from captain

So general warning that swells will reach about 9 foot as weather gets progressively worse through the afternoon. There is now some risk to reaching our revised first stop, Ketchikan. So I guess we'llRead more
Day 2 - Arrived in Ketchikan

We docked about 5:40am. I don't think we can disembark until 7.
It's raining a little and a bit gusty. Needless to say, I'm a bit giddy about the rain. I can't wait to get out in it.
Day 2 - Out and about in Ketchikan

It was pretty wet.
Day 2 - Creek Street, Ketchikan

The old redlight district that was shut down in the 50's. Now serving as the historic district.
Back in the boat

Today's winning vegetable creation is a French poodle. By winner, I mean the one I decided was the best. It's made out of cauliflower of course.
Day 3 - First light

We're still in transit to Glacier Bay. We've just passed a sister ship, the Norwegian Sun. One of the first things visible this morning.
Day 3 - Glacier Bay

We have a park ranger on board, giving a talk over the loud speakers. Stunningly beautiful here.
For some real time follow along, the boat's webcam is here.Read more
Day 3 - The Margerie Glacier

Honestly the picture doesn't really capture how blue it was.
Day 3 - Just left Glacier Bay National P

This national Park was fabulous and has jumped into my top 3 of the 27 I've seen so far. Fabulous place.
So this morning about 7:30, the park rangers boarded the ship. One acted as tour guide overRead more
