  • WALVIS - the brief

    October 18, 2021 in Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

“A five-day hike stretching over 100 km. The Namib100 takes you through one of the wildest, most unspoilt places on
the planet. As a part of the greater Skeleton Coast, you will walk over massive sand dunes in the Namib, the world’s
oldest desert, and along the Sandwich Harbour lagoon; rich with sea and bird life with only your thoughts as company.
This stretch of Namibia has ancient history, a place of old diamond claims, sun-bleached whale bones and shipwrecks
that hide in the mist. You’ll follow no tracks and leave just your own. It is one of the world’s iconic hikes.” - Live the journey intro

  • Day 1 Oysters and Champaign

    October 19, 2021 in Namibia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Modderbankies is where the Kuiseb River in ancient times flowed into the Atlantic before it was stopped by the desert. Here we saw the remnants of mud and
silt that were deposited at this estuary millions of years ago. Although the river disappears under the dunes’
fresh underground water filters into the Sandwich Harbour lagoon, it changes the color and temperature of the
water and even the immediate environment, creating a micro-climate that nurtures a huge and abundant bird and sea life. Sandwich Harbour was classified as a Ramsar Wetland of international importance in 1995. The
total area of the Ramsar Wetland is 13,8 hectares.

Combined with the unique vegetation adapted to the micro-climate of this lagoon, this first day set the tone for the diversity in scenery, fauna and flora that we experienced in the following days.
The tracks of animals will reminded us that we were not walking alone and then we saw the lonely jackal. For the last stretch of the day we followed the lagoon’s
shoreline – in the distance the mirage of our fellow hikers seemed to have them floating on water and then up the last dune to our camp.

The day ended perfectly with a 5star camp and a 10star dinner

The oysters and champagne in the desert after a 24 km hike was definitely a first. Followed with steak kebabs and braai broodjies.

  • Day 2 Seal colony

    October 20, 2021, South Atlantic Ocean ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

We passed a number of huge seal colonies on your way to the Langewand where the dunes drop directly into the ocean.

It is only possible to walk the Langewand at low tide as you will be trapped between the
perpendicular dunes and mighty Atlantic during high tide.

  • Day2 Langwand

    October 20, 2021, South Atlantic Ocean ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

The 22.4km walk ended early in the afternoon.
The weather was very kind with little wind and the camp was set up to overlook the sea.

We sneaked in a quick walk late afternoon to visit the Shawnee wreck.

Dinner was superb with a lamb stew and bread freshly baked.

  • Day 3 Room with a view

    October 21, 2021 in Namibia ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

We started the day again at the wreck of the Shawnee that stranded in 1976. The skeleton of this wreck reminded us again that this coastline is the book of remembrance; telling the story of hopes and dreams and of lives
lost. The shore is littered with the shells, white-washed whale bones
and driftwood that comes from some mysterious places.

23.2km later we were at the new camp.

The camp was on a dune, overlooking the desert and the sea. We but just speckles in a vast space of nothingness.

  • Day 4 Die Soutpan

    October 22, 2021 in Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

On the 4th day we turned inland to see a completely different face of the Namib. The sea coast and dunes were replaced with long stretches of scattered white quarts or the black snake-like formation of exposed lava fields. This is one of the diamond areas.
The diamond mining era formed an important part of the history of this area. Big diamond companies monopolized this area to strip it from its diamond bearing gravel. That is why it was called the
    Sperrgebiet – or Forbidden Land.

We ended the day at ur camp near one of these old mining settlements where wind, washed buildings engulfed by Namib sand, reminds you of lives lost by those that were enchanted by stories of diamonds lying under trees like plums. People literally walked themselves to death in these harsh conditions, searching for the big one ...

    19.4km for the day.

  • Day 5 Soutknersvlakte

    October 23, 2021 in Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

We started the last day with a quick hike to the old mining town.

The hike started through a patch of greenery where the tracks and droppings of oryx tells of a nearby natural spring. Just image life 100 years ago in this barren landscape....

Again we turned towards the sea, crossing a huge saltpan and ancient ocean floors littered with shells, the crunching sound of our feet breaking through the salt crust. So different to the texture of the dunes and again different to walking on the beach.

Occasionally catching sight of the wreck of the Eduard Bohlen in the distance, beckoning you to come closer.
The Bohlen stranded on 5 September 1909 and it is also at the Bohlen where the hike ends. 13.3km for the day....100km on the dot.

Champaign all around. 100km in one of the harshest environments on earth.
