  • Day 4: Bushcamp

    October 16, 2020 in South Africa ⋅ 🌙 26 °C

Last day of the Olifants trail was the best.
A hippo was lying on its side in a small pool and decided mock charge us as we got closer.

We spotted a lone elephant on our "designated" lunch spot. Dennis the guide had to chase it away.

The last evening also had its fair share of excitement. A grazing herd of elephant approached while we were sleeping.
Our tents, tied to a patch of trees, seemed very vulnerable until the elephants smelled us at 40m, trumpeted and turned away. Lots of excitement 2310 at night in the dark

  • Day 5 Rest day

    October 18, 2020 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 36 °C

Walked the last 6km's to the pickup. 20min from the pickup point we saw lots of lion tracks and then two lionesses dashed from the riverbank to the safety of the Mopani trees

The ice cold beers, a swim in the pool at Olifants camp and a hamburger was all 7 star.

Drove to Mopani camp for the evening and had a surprise visit

Sue and I were eating dinner outside our hut and a honey bagger walked onto the veranda, opened the fridge, had a look inside, closed the door and run away. Only in the Kruger

  • Day 6 hike to Hippo pool

    October 19, 2020 in South Africa ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

First day of the Mphungwane trail. The wildlife is mind blowing. We saw elephant, buffalo, various antelope and a are sharing our water hole with a hippo and crocodile. This is the on water in this area so we are uncomfortable neighbours.

Had an interesting encounter with an old Dagga boy. The old lonely bull has reversed his vulnerable back into a thorn bush for protection during his afternoon nap. We expectedly stumbled into him at the heat of the day. The bull only had one place to go..... forward and towards us. At 40m there was luckily enough time for him to hear our shouting and the guides to cock their 458's.
The bull stormed off for 70m turned and waited for us to leave his territory.

The camp was manifest , flat and on a river bed. We made fire and shared fresh meat with Shadrack and Velly"s pap and sheba.

If Africa only was this simple...

    October 19, 2020 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Velly the guide opened up the nicest water hole. Fresh cold water..... at 37 Celsius the water is so delicious.

A herd of buffalo came down the opposite embankment. 1st the old cow.... slowly....using her age and the herd trusting her instincts. Then the rest followed.Read more

  • Day 8 : Hike to old Ranger hut

    October 20, 2020 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

We spend the 20th on foot walking towards the old Rangers hut but more importantly scouting for spoor (tracks) and animals ...... with great success

We found a spot where the elephants dug for water. Little did we know we were sharing the water with a pack in excess of 20 Wild Dogs.

The dogs were not keen the relinquish the only water in a 6km radius. They kept there distance but didn't go away. Just watching on full alert or maybe ever try and spot a weakness.

Walk back in 40 Celsius and decided to turn our water hole into a foot spa before the rehabilitation process.

The guides where extremely strict in returning any change back and only leave footprints.
