The girls spent the new year's in Budapest, as we the parents have long realised we cannot compete with Mama,TV and blue champagne. To top it all, the celebrations continued in Mc Donald's two days later, before those poor souls are returned to their strict diet of home cooking.Read more

Greeting the new 2024

While the girls celebrated in Budapest, we walked over to meet and greet the new year at Anikó's and Ricsie's, together with the usual suspects ( Rozi, András, Dávid, Anita, Hajni, Adrien, and the gazzilions of their kids). András surprised with a micro -Shuba - his take on the Russian herring shuba my mum made here a few years back. We spent the first day of the year walking Rosie in the woods ( mushrooms!) , reading,and hanging out at home,with Anikó, Ricsi,Hajni and Adrien, and the little Juli, Viola,Zorka and Konrad.Read more

I keep receiving leaves for my permaculture garden from people of Győrújbarát, and in the last two days I have received 15+34 giant bags of leaves. What a catch!

Growing like mushrooms

It's been raining all morning, but having Rosie means long walks happen regardless of your opinion on the weather. So off we went to the woods, Rosie and I, to find the mushrooms that do pop up in the dead of winter ( although I must say,it is 10 degrees Celsius even now in January). Here is the bounty : more than 1kg of oyster mushrooms ( on the abandoned plot right next to us,so no need for the two hour walk in the rain, really) and some velvet shank ( that I did not pick as I was not entirely sure that it was it).Read more

Me, myself, a cat and a dog

So, what does one do while at home alone for a week? Start a day with a coffee in the Zoula with Rosie, listening to the birds and enjoying the fact it is below 30 degrees for a few hours. Then walk Rosie in the woods and pick elderberries (for drying, and for immune system boosting syrup), attempt to garden if heat permits, water the garden, harvest fruit and vegetables, braid garlic, celebrate Rosie's "nd birthday, feed the dog, cat and fish (which had to be resqued from the pond that overheated), and all the rest.Read more

Shop for food no more

On this week at home on my own, I decided not to shop for food, and insted enjoy whatever the garden or the forest present me with on the day. Turns out it was not just slim pickings, but gourmet meals all the way. And the flavours were as good as the colours!Read more

"Skates, Snacks, & Sweet Treats in Győr

It’s not quite proper winter yet, but the ice skating rink in Győr is already open, so we popped down for a bit of skating while Gergő was off partying with Space Global in Ireland. After an hour and a half on the ice, we’d worked up an appetite, so we decided to check out that gluten-free spot, Szafi. They’ve got all sorts – gluten-free lángos, pizzas, burgers, and more. And while we were at it, we also popped into Mono, a dessert place Zsófi recently discovered – the cakes and treats there are amazing, and yes, all gluten-free too!Read more
