• The Dhamekh Stupa

    11. april, Indien ⋅ ☀️ 37 °C

We visited a Jain temple on our way to the stupa.

The Dhamehk Stupa is a massive, 43.6 metre high cylindrical Buddhist monument, marking the spot where Buddha delivered his first sermon. Built in 500 CE to replace an Ashokan-era structure (249 BCE), it is adorned with intricate Gupta-period carvings and serves as a major pilgrimage site, maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. It is surrounded by many other archaeological ruins. It remains a profound spiritual site for Buddhists worldwide.

The site is immaculate - very well maintained and extremely clean. We would have loved to have lingered longer, but our time was running out.
