• Yellowstone National Park Day 3

    July 26, 2023 in the United States ⋅ 🌬 25 °C

Today was all about the water . . . rivers, cisterns, lakes, geysers . . . and Old Faithful.

After a good evening in West Yellowstone, Montana, it was back into Wyoming first thing to check out some of the more visited areas. As you might expect, these areas were much more crowded than up in the northern parts of the park. First it was a hike around the Grand Prismatic Springs. This area now has the vivid colors that I saw in Porcelain Basin 33 years ago. Very nice. https://www.relive.cc/view/vRO783pYEK6

Then it was down the road to the Biscuit Basin, and a nice hike up on the Mystic Loop trail to see the Mystic Falls. More beautiful colors and great views. https://www.relive.cc/view/vZqNLpJdx3O

Then the big one . . . Old Faithful. This area has really expanded over the past 33 years, and Old Faithful is still faithful, but a little longer on the release. Every major earthquake in the region effects the underground fissures, and that effects how long it takes Old Faithful to erupt. As I recall, it was about every 69-70 minutes in 1990, now it is just over every 90 minutes. But it went off as projected, and it was still pretty amazing. Driving down around Yellowstone Lake and staying out the East Gate tonight. Another fabulous day.
