2022 - What’s Next

Lots more travel to come, with several new places plan to visit, and two major hash events to participate in. Les mer
  • Quick Tour of Buenos Aires

    5. desember 2022, Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

After the overnight flight into BA, an hour in the customs line, and an hour taxi ride into the city, we arrived in time to catch the Japan vs Croatia match, which went into double overtime, and then on to kicks to resolve it. That took away over an hour of our afternoon time for sightseeing. We only had 2 hours on the Hop-On Hop-Off bus, and only got halfway around . . . so most of these pictures are nothing special, but they will give you a hint of what the city looks like.
Buenos Aires is a lovely city, very warm and welcoming. Should get to see some more better sights on Wednesday . . . tomorrow is our ferry ride over to Uruguay.

  • Uruguay Hash Prelube to Antarctica

    6. desember 2022, Uruguay ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Nearly 40 hashers made the 75 minute ferry ride across the widest river in the world between Argentina and Uruguay . . . meeting up in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay for a prelube hash. It was a roasting 90 degrees F when we set off on trail from the Reina Café on the coast, hared by Hazukashii. Trail looped its way along the shoreline to the local stadium, then dashed up into the ville passing many small shops. Eventually passing the military base, the pack soon found the runner/walker split. The walkers headed mostly straight back to the port for the on in along the shoreline, while the runners enjoyed a long swing through Parque Ferrando with all the trees and sand. Making its way down to the shoreline again, trail passed through some dirt tracks of a neighborhood, then down the street passing the port, before making its way back along the grassy banks of the river, ending up back at the café. The pack wasted little time finding some cold drinks, and settled in for some snacks.

After rehydrating and a snack, a rousing circle was formed, and down downs were passed out. We actually had a real life virgin with us on trail, and she ran the whole trail, good job. The pack was made up of hashers from all over the world, and we had some good songs and charges. We then strolled back to the port for the 75 minute ferry ride back to Argentina. Most of the pack followed on to the Desnivel for dinner, and fun . . . FUN I TELL YOU, was had by all.

  • Buenos Aires H3 / Waddle On #1

    7. desember 2022, Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

We had a nice trail around the city streets of Buenos Aires, hared by liquor Up and Occupied, and I believe the pack was between 50-60 strong. Runners had about 11 kms to deal with, while the walkers had . . . less, I don’t know. We ran past some cool statues, over some cool bridges, and through some interesting parks, with the last one being rather large and containing several coolers full of beer courtesy of the Buenos Aires H3. Five of the local BAH3 hashers turned up to welcome us and bring us some beer, of which we were all grateful. After our rehydration efforts, we headed back to the bar where we started, for more drinks and a circle. All in all, a splendid evening.Les mer

  • Waddle On Trail #2 (Ushuaia)

    9. desember 2022, Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

Most of our crew has made their way down to Ushuaia, where we will meet the boat for our Antarctica adventure (we sail at 6 PM Saturday). That gave us one more chance to get in a hash trail in the cool air, before we explore that seventh continent that we all are so looking forward to (but more on that later). This trail was hared by Keeps it Up and Wild Bush, and took us from one end of town to the other . . . and back, while also gaining some elevation along the way. Including the “searching for trail part” it was a solid 7 Kms of fun in the snowy southern tip of Argentina.

As the pack slowly regrouped at the hotel, a few beers were consumed, then we gathered up for a rousing circle led by Sex Toy and Thanks for the Mammaries. Another great adventure . . . then it was back inside to watch Argentina defeat the Netherlands. What a party took place in town after that big win, it was awesome.

Note: Stole all these pictures from fellow hashers, thanks my friends. 🙂 I did take the videos of the party in town (after the semifinal victory in the World Cup), you can see them at https://www.facebook.com/Hazukashii/posts/pfbid…

  • Antarctica Adventure - Day 1-3

    10. desember 2022, Chile ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

10 Dec – We departed Ushuaia at the scheduled 1800 and headed east along the (Beagle Channel between Argentina and Chile). We had some great views, including a close passing of Port Williams, the furthest south city on the planet. By late that evening we exited the channel and began our crossing of the Drake Straight (a.k.a. the Drake Shake or the Drake Lake, depending on how rough the seas are). A previous cruise a couple weeks before us, had been hit by a 30 foot wave that crashed through a porthole and sucked a passenger out into the sea. On the morning of the 10th, our ship (the Plancias) returned from its previous cruise that was scheduled to visit the Falkland Islands, then South Georgia, and then on down to Antarctica. Unfortunately, after departing South Georgia, one of the passengers slipped and banged his head, and had to be taken back to the Falkland Island for medical attention, but passed away due to a brain hemorrhage. Both ships never made it to Antarctica.

11-12 Dec – Sunday morning was a bit rough, but fairly calm. A few of our party had a bit of seasickness but by the afternoon we were enjoying the Drake Lake effect with nearly flat seas. We continued on through Monday to Antarctica without incident, arriving off the coast by the late evening.

  • Antarctica Adventure - Day 4

    13. desember 2022, South Atlantic Ocean ⋅ ⛅ 0 °C

Our first day of off ship excursions, we were able to go out for the first stroll with the penguins. This year the snowfall has been exceptionally heavy, and the penguins have been mostly unable to lay their eggs. They are stamping around on their nesting areas trying to help melt the snow. In the afternoon, more off ship excursions took place (kayaking, mountaineering, and hiking).

That night the first group had their night of camping ashore. We departed the ship at about 2100 and rode the zodiac boats to shore with a bag filled with a cover, two sleeping bags, and a thermal mat. We were also handed a bivvy sack upon arrival. We set about digging our graves in the snow, big enough set up our sleeping bags ensemble. That took about an hour for most, and many took the first opportunity to jump into bed and get to sleep .

We waddle back to our snow holes to jump in for a cold night’s sleep in the open. It would not be under the stars, as there was no darkness. While the sun did slip over the horizon for a couple hours, it never got dark enough out for stars to make their presence known.

  • Antarctica Adventure - Day 5

    14. desember 2022, Antarktis ⋅ ☁️ 1 °C

The morning we awoke early from our snowy slumber, repacked our sleeping accoutrement, filled in our holes, and then made our way to the shore for pick up and return to the ship. This was supposed to be our afternoon opportunity to go ashore and assemble for the Thinking Drinking H3 trail, but the weather was not cooperating.

All ashore activity had to be cancelled due to high winds, so I spent the rest of the day relaxing on the ship (which just happened to be my birthday), and sipped a bit of adult beverage. The second half of the passengers had their opportunity to camp, and they repeated the whole process we had done the night before. They had a new spot that looked even more interesting than what we had enjoyed the night before.

  • Antarctica Adventure - Day 6

    15. desember 2022, Antarktis ⋅ 🌧 0 °C

We awoke to an overcast and foggy morning, but the winds are minimal and the seas are very calm. Excursions are back in full swing, and we took advantage of the great weather to run the Thinking Drinking H3 trail #77, followed by the Polar Plunge.

Everything went on schedule, and we made it back to the boat for circle.

  • Antarctica Adventure - Day 7&8

    18. desember 2022, South Atlantic Ocean ⋅ 🌧 0 °C

16 Dec – Another very calm and pleasant day, so nice out that the afternoon mountaineering had to be cancelled due to increased avalanche potential.

17 Dec – I guess there was plenty of snow slide, since about 4 am, there was a loud scratching down the side of the ship. I looked out the porthole to see a large iceberg moving down the length of the ship. Had to get up and go outside for a better view. Ended up staying up for the morning excursions (but had a good nap in the afternoon). We had a split effort today. Half the group went ashore for a hike and seeing penguins, while the other half had a zodiac ride around the icebergs and island. Then we switched. I got the boat ride first, then the walk ashore.Les mer

  • Antarctica Adventure - Day 9

    18. desember 2022, South Atlantic Ocean ⋅ 🌧 0 °C

This was billed as our day to actually walk on the continent. We had a short zodiac ride to the shore, with a stop at an iceberg to get a closer look at a seal that had lounged out there. Ashore, we had a good walk around to see another seal, as well as see the whole bay. Lots of great pictures.Les mer

  • Antarctica Adventure - Day 10

    19. desember 2022, Antarktis ⋅ 🌧 1 °C

Last day for excursions, as we visited Deception Island. Deception Island is a super large volcanic caldera. Listed as still active and has a steam vent, but it has not blown in about 50 years.

    More info at . . . http://www.deceptionisland.aq

We entered through the very narrow Neptune’s Bellows access point, and sailed directly to the other end where some of the passengers went out into the cool windy weather to walk up the side. By noon, we were all back on the ship and headed for the exit as the weather turned sour. We then made another lap around the island on the outside before heading north and back to Argentina.

  • Antarctica Adventure - Day 11-13

    22. desember 2022, South Atlantic Ocean ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

20-22 Dec – The sea state was a bit rougher than when we sailed down. During the night of the 19-20th and through most of that day, we had steady 5-6 meter swells, with occasional waves up to 8 meters or more. By the morning of the 21st, we were in calmer waters and the final day was fairly steady. By the evening we had entered Beagle Channel on the final leg back into Ushuaia.
We actually arrived back in port late on 21 Dec, but spent the night on the boat with a bit of partying, and some took the opportunity to run a hash trail out into town . . . and I heard something about shower beers as well. That’s it for the adventure of a lifetime. 2022 has been such an amazing year (you would not believe all the places I have been this year, other than Antarctica).

Since I am traveling with only a backpack, I could not keep the give aways. So I gave them away . . . even the shirt off my own back. 😄😄😄

  • Postlube Trail in Ushuaia, Argentina

    23. desember 2022, Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

This was originally going to be a ferry ride over to Chile to spend the day in Puerto Williams (the furthest city to the south on planet earth . . . although, we were not too far north of it). Unfortunately, Chile was not cooperating. So our hares Yoron-Weed, Nut Mechanic, and Homeo (with some assistance from Sprechen sie Douche), found a park near the border. Google Maps is maybe not accurate on the exact line, and some hashers said we actually did cross into Chile, so they were happy. I decided it was not significant enough to count it as a new country for hashing, so will fly into Santiago next year to join the hash group for a regular trail. This was the end of my 19 day trip to Antarctica (including a total of 5 hash trails with pre/post lubes in Uruguay, Argentina (Buenos Aires and Ushuaia x2), and down in Antarctica.

  • Second Leg to Houston

    25. desember 2022, Forente stater ⋅ 🌙 -2 °C

Second leg was an overnighter from Buenos Aires to Houston, on United. I got a cheap upgrade and flew business class, what a relief. Got to sleep for a few hours on the 10 hour flight. Was supposed to be a 4 hour layover in Houston, but then the plane broke . . . result was 9 hours in Houston. Finally headed to Tampa.Les mer

  • Taco Tuesday H3 & Jolly Roger H3

    28. desember 2022, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Finally got into Tampa at 6 pm on Christmas day, and headed straight to the house. Slept well on Sunday night. Monday was a day of rest.

Tuesday I made my way out to St Pete for the Taco Tuesday H3. Good 5 mile trail and white elephant party, with good food.

Wednesday, it was off to the Jolly Roger H3 for trail #1616. Trail was really short, so left with no other choice, had to run it twice. :) Then after a short circle, we all went into the Side Spliters Comedy Club for the show. Great time all around.

  • Dabada da, That's All Folks

    31. desember 2022, Forente stater ⋅ 🌧 20 °C

To finish out the year, I flew up to spend New Year's Eve with one of my best friends. She picked me up at the airport, and then we had lunch with another good friend of mine in Charleston. I met and hashed with Puking Cougar in Germany, over a decade ago. Was good to see him all grown up, married, with 2 children. A fine young man.

After lunch, we drove up the coast on our way to Boston, stopped for a run along the Little Wambaw Swamp Wilderness trail.
