    Sittin' on the dock of the bay

    Wastin' Time. Not really, I actually wrapped up another article, on Israel, and cleaned up a few things for future travel. But I have been spending a lot of time just hanging out. Waiting 7 hours here at the airport, for a 2 hour flight to Athens. I will then have a 10 hour layover waiting for a 1 hour flight to Corfu. I'm not complaining though, life is grand.Читать далее

    The downside of lots of travel

    I started to get some sniffles yesterday. Thought it was allergies (not COVID), because I had COVID last month. Woke with a very sore throat last night. Went to the clinic this morning, antigen test, negative. They sent me for x-rays in town, could be pneumonia. X-rays were negative. Then a PCR, also negative. So, blood test to determine if it is viral or bacterial. Turns out its Bronchitis, just a Respiratory Tract Infection . . . Bacterial, so not contagious. So I can resume hashing.Читать далее

    Athens H3 Corfu Island Weekend Trail #2

    Athens H3 - Corfu Island Weekend – 26-30 May

    Trail 2 on Saturday started with an hour bus ride to the other side of the island, to the lovely little seaside town of Palaiokastrites. As we exited the bus, they said this is a quick stop to grab a drink or a snack, or a swim if you wish. Thirty minutes, back on the bus. Well, 2 hours later, we finally get back on the bus headed to the start. Seems someone forgot about the crazy little reindeer games that had been arranged for us on the beach. We had three tasks, making things out of stuff we could find on the beach, but moving right along . . . chalk talk explained the marks, and then they pointed to the top of the nearby mountain, and said that is the start. The bus will take you to the top, and it will be all downhill (but hares lie, even in Greece).

    We did go to the top, as far as the bus was concerned, but the trail is another story. Anyway, the roads getting to the top are typical island roads, and several spots were single lanes where we had to wait, and so narrow once we did go, that we actually scrapped the side of the bus on a wall. But overall, the driver was excellent sneaking his way through the tine lanes. Runners trail ended up being 40% up, and 60% down, with plenty of off road shiggy. Lots of scrub brush and plenty of thorns, which one harriette found out that they are vicious.

    About halfway through this 8 km trail (runners), the walkers and runners came back together for a beer check, and then we all followed the same trail on down the hill the rest of the way into the finish at the beach. This is where things got a bit out of hand. As the pack was coming in, the bus driver went missing. All the beer and softies were on the bus. It would be 30 minutes before the bus driver returned, by this time just about the whole pack had made their way down the mountain, before anyone got some post trail lubrication. So, we quickly downed a couple of beers and boarded the bus for the next stop, at a sea side pub (where we held a quick circle, before sending the swimmers down to the ocean) on the way back to the hash hotel.     Hanging on the wall at the laundromat today . . . the sock graveyard.

    Laundry Day

    When you travel light, with all you have in just one airplane carry-on sized back pack, laundry day . . . every week . . . is essential. I was able to do a load in Brazil just before departure 2 weeks ago, and managed to sneak in two weeks of travel and hashing before today. I had 3 days of transit to Israel, and 4 days in Israel, before spending 2 days getting to Corfu. Fortunately I was able to string it out through the Corfu weekend. I now have a full day to hang out before my 2 day trip to Bangkok starting tomorrow. My only goal for today was to move to a hotel closer to the airport, and get my laundry done. Check and Check. Now for a nice dinner, and a good night's sleep . . . and then back in the air.Читать далее

    Excellent trail from the Harriettes, on a warm but very humid evening. It was a B to A trail, as once we arrived at the parking lot, we soon boarded a boat and scooted up the canal for about 10 minutes. From there, it was a most impressive 8 Km live hare from P*ssy Virus. Weaving in and out of every alleyway and side street he could find, trail was extremely well marked and entertaining.

    There were two beer stops and a cocktail stop (of which I just observed, as I don't drink and run . . . I practice the age old option of running, then drinking). At the end, we had plenty of beer, and some great snacks, as we awaited the start of circle. After several down downs, and getting snagged as a returner (its only been 2.5 years due to COVID), they mercilessly abused my OHS scar for being breast reduction, and yours truly got "Tits of the Week." I'm sure there are some pictures coming soon. PV then invited us to a new Pizza and Guinness Pub, where he shouted the entire pack for food and drinks. An awesome hash trail and on after.     I really feel at home here in Bangkok. The trails on the klongs, back alleys, and dirt lots are so entertaining. Circles in parking lots, hot and humid weather, and Thai food . . . you just can't beat it. This trail of 9 kms started with a balance beam water crossing, and running along a smelly klong, dodging scrub brush, and always looking for the next turn. I may end up here long term some day.Читать далее

    The Fallout from COVID . . . Luggage, or rather . . . Baggage from 2019, back in hand in 2022

    When I started my current round the world hash travel journey on 10 Oct 2019, I really had no idea how long it would last or where it would take me. My first stop upon leaving Hawaii was to All Japan Nash Hash 2019 at Yamanakako. Being Japan in Oct, I was prepared for cold weather and brought along a suitcase of cold weather attire. Turns out it was a lovely weekend . . . well, once Typhoon Hagibis passed through on Friday and Saturday (see attached photos). Overall, none of the cold weather attire was actually required. My next stop was Bangkok, and I had planned on traveling through all warm weather locations from that point, so did not need it after that. A friend in Bangkok had an empty corner and offered to store the suitcase for me for a few months while I traveled.

    Well, we all know what happened in the first few months of 2020 . . . I had gotten as far as Bahrain when the wheels on my cart went fully flat. Initially planning for 4-5 days in Bahrain, I ended up spending a month. I would have stayed longer if they would have renewed my visa, but when they didn’t, I found the first flight out. Fast forward 2.5 years, we have all gone through many months of lock down and limited travel (well, most of you did, I was all over the place, visiting and hashing in 55 countries since departing Thailand in Dec 2019).

    I arrived in Bangkok on Wednesday (after not being able to enter Thailand since), and today was able to get back into the suitcase I left behind 30 months ago. I anticipated it might be a little like Christmas . . . but no, just a bunch of hash crap and misc clothes. About 25% has gone into the trash, sending a friend a few items, and the rest will stay put until some future date when I may finally settle down . . . could be here in Bangkok for all I know . . . but I am surprisingly still having a blast traveling, with no planned end date.

    My old friend Bushman set an amazing 7 km trail out north of the airport (BKK), with loads of shiggy. Dashing along on rice paddies, and dodging trees, along with several water crossings, the pack of about 20 had an excellent day. Was good to be back after 30 months of exile in the COVID era. A quick but fun circle, was followed by an all expenses paid dinner, thanks Bushman. Great times in Bangkok.Читать далее

    It all started out well. The pack gathered, the hare explained the marks, and off we went. 5 minutes later, it started to sprinkle. 5 minutes after that, it started to rain. 5 minutes after that, it poured . . . And continued to do so, for half an hour or more. Trail totally washed away. The pack straggled in on their own over the next half hour, all but one . . . Who was out there lost for 3 hours.     Special Edition for the 50th Anniversary of Hashing in South Korea (1972-2022)

    Although Mother Hash is now coming up on 84 years old, and Father Hash is 60 . . . The greater world of hashing is also coming of age, with many clubs celebrating their 50th Anniversary of setting trails.

    Expanding on my earlier writings on Hashing in South Korea, this enhanced article celebrates 50 years of the Seoul H3, and a bit more.  As you will read in the article, I had the pleasure of meeting the founder of the Seoul H3 earlier this year, and getting his story.  I also had the pleasure to meet and get the story of the founder for the second hash club in Seoul, which was the first Harriettes hash club in Korea.  Lots to read about, and you can see it all at https://www.gotothehash.net/history/ItS-Seoul.pdf

    As you will note if you read the article in the link above . . . is that I have met the founder, Ian Young, and he sent the following to me to relate to the all of you on the occasion of the 50th anniversary . . .

    “For the Seoul Hash to have thrived for the last 50 years there obviously have been many others who successfully directed the Hash’s well organized chaos. These include my co-founders, Robbie Douglas and Tony Parry and another enthusiastic, and still active, early hasher Jim Whitely. While for the Seoul Hash it is 50 and counting. For the four of us it is 80 and counting. Wishing you all a great celebration. Have a down down for me.”

    To recap the trail for the 50th anniversary . . . it was a classic run around Namsan, with plenty of UP UP UP.  What has changed is, that the old trails we used to run (single track dirt trails, with rocks and roots) are now smoothly carpeted (yes, carpeted with woven rope matting) twin track trails.  The rest is neatly paved or covered with stairs . . . bottom line, the old “land of the not quite right” is now . . . quite right in all regards. 

    As far as the boys in orange, they still have the same vigor as always, but the circle has changed.  Gone is the fire, by public decree.  What used to be an organized circle, where all were silent unless (putting your mug over your head) you requested to speak . . . is gone.  The circle was a solid mixture of private parties and outbursts of comments. 

    No longer are you required to sing a song or tell a joke when it is your turn for a splash . . . and the sacred bedpan (maybe mostly due to COVID) was sparsely used, and when not in use . . . carelessly set on the ground where it was bumped into or tripped upon. 

    I am not complaining by any means, but the old traditions have been lost.  I only say this, because the Seoul H3 circles have always been some of my favorites over my 38 years of hashing.  I have run with nearly 400 hash clubs around the world, and Seoul H3 has always been one of the most unique in all hashdom.     

    But I understand that times change, people change . . . and hashing changes.  “As Hashers, we owe no allegiance to any Kings, Queens, Popes, potentates, or any other futhermucker, only to ourselves … TO THE HASH!”  RIP Shitonya, and the many other Seoul bruddas we have lost.    Читать далее

    It has been about 22 years since the last time I hared a trail for this hash. I have been back for a couple visits since, but only caught the trail. This 8km tour of southeast Seoul gave the pack of 15 hashers an opportunity to stretch their legs on this glorious Sunday afternoon. I even threw in a walkers split to knock off about a km for those in need. There was a ladder to climb as well.Читать далее

    I first came to KL for INTERHASH 98. Since then, I have been back about a half dozen times for various events (International Hash Challenge, Mother Hash 3000th, Pan Asia 2003, Mother Hash 75th Anniversary, etc).     After an early morning arrival, and one great night’s sleep, it was full on for Wednesday here in KL. Starting with lunch at the Royal Selangor Club with Neil & Sim Campbell, we then took a ride out to where construction has recently begun on the HASH HOUSE. Something the Hash World has been waiting for over the past 20+ years. Then, it was off to the run site for the KL Harriettes.

    It was an outstanding trail, but not without its controversies. Even here in Malaysia, the trails sometimes do not work out as planned. This trail was planned as a 7 km shiggy romp, with a few walkers knowing where to cut off a bit. Well, we got to check number 2, and the FRB turned right, and about 200 meters out, found paper . . . and led us all back . . . to the start, in just under 4 kms. So after a short discussion with the hare, the runners took off back out on trail to find out what we missed. In the end, the 7 km trail turned into an 11 km trail, but it was gorgeous.

    Tons of shiggy, water crossings, and at one point I stepped into what turned out to be a mud hole, and sunk in about 3 feet, losing my sneaker in the process. I was able to dig it out, but it was covered in mud, so hobbled along in one sock foot until I found a water hole to wash off in. From there, it was smooth sailing to the finish, just before dark. After a quick circle, we adjourned to a local restaurant and had a great dinner. As always, another great time on the hash. Looking forward to several more great trails over the next 8 days in KL.     (for those unfamiliar with Malaysia, this was NOT Mother Hash)

    The temps have been in the 90s F (30s C) all week, but an afternoon shower cooled things off (actually enjoy the heat). With the rain on the ground, the humidity was super high, and I already need no help getting my sweat on. So right from the start, I was soaking wet. Trail started at the Royal Selangor Club, and although it was basically a pavement pounder, it was still an interesting trail.

    We had somewhere between 50 and 80 hashers on trail (meaning I saw about 50+ at the start, but counted 80+ after). The checks were quite difficult, with the first mark being roughly 150 meters away (which on a couple occasions was two blocks and turn left to find the first mark). With all the extra checking, I had about 9 kms, but my guess true trail was right around 7 kms (but also, the marks ran out about a km short of the finish - good thing I knew where the finish was).

    Although I have run with them once before, 9 years ago . . . Overall, I did not get the feeling they get many visitors anymore. There was no mention of the two visitors, no one really spoke to me unless I spoke first . . . and one fine gentlemen actually suggested I leave (since I was not a member of the RSC) after the trail (but that is another story). Fortunately, one hasher named Sly stepped up and covered for me, so all was well in the end. As the evening lingered on, I did have a few nice chats with some of the hashers. Along with that, I also had a couple Tiger beers, and a bite to eat, and no hard feelings. But next time I turn up in KL, I hope the Damansara H3 is up and running again, so I can run with them instead. Wink Wink, Nudge Nudge. On On to more fun on tomorrow's trail with the Petaling H3.     What an awesome trail we had out in the countryside north of Kuala Lumpur. Start was about 60 kms to the north, and we met along a lazy old stream. Although it was sunny when we started, it quickly turned overcast as we took off on trail. After a short run up the old road, we turned right and into a rubber tree plantation for what would be 9 + Kms of fun. 10 minutes into trail, it starts to sprinkle. 10 more minutes and it is more like rain. Another 10 minutes and it is pouring. Totally drenched, our pack of about 50 hashers are looking for small 4 inch square pieces of paper that are made to disintegrate in 3 days or less, but in the rain . . . in about 30 minutes. The trail is just lovely, and we are having a ball going through the maze of rubber trees (if you have never been in a rubber tree plantation . . . oh boy).

    Seriously, some checks, there is literally a dozen equally possible ways for the trail to go. You don’t want to get out of shouting distance if you are checking, because if you do, and the pack finds the trail, and you don’t hear it . . . well, oooops (and in the pouring rain . . . double, no triple ooops). So we slog our way through this trial for nearly 2 hours, and make the river crossing at the end, and all is well. Really, it was one of the most awesome trails I have run. Virginia may be for lovers, but damnit . . . Malaysia is for Hashers!! On On.    Читать далее

    Malaysian Hash Council

    I was invited to attend a meeting on Sunday, with the Malaysia Hash Council at the Royal Selangor Club. We started with a 2 hour discussion on the purpose of the MHC, and what they are facing in Malaysia. Among other issues, the three biggest issues, not unlike other parts of the world, are . . .

    1. Paper complaints . . . people are complaining that the paper used to set trail is litter. Some clubs have started having sweepers follow along after trail, or the next day, and picking up all the paper.

    2. Large groups making lots of noise, singing songs, songs with foul language, and drinking in public. This is an ongoing issue, and some circles have been shut down and dispersed by the police. Malaysia is a predominantly Muslim country, and large groups of (often) foreigners, drinking and making lots of noise, is causing complaints.

    3. Being recognized by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) as a recreational sporting activity. This is mostly politics and bureaucracy.

    After the discussion, we had lunch and a couple beers, and I took a peak in the HHH Museum there in the RSC. Does not look like anyone has visited in years, primarily due to COVID, but probably not to much before that in recent years either.    Читать далее

    Excellent but grueling trail with Mother Hash out at Broga Hill. After making our way through the first check, trail quickly embarked on a steep climb up to the nearest peak, slogging through the jungle. Eventually reaching an actual trail in the park, and making our way to a point about 2/3rds of the way to the top, trail then turned down once again, just to make a loop down and back up to the same point . . . where trail crossed over the same point, and finished its climb to the top. From there, trail had a few brief encounters with some razor grass and other shiggy, but came in mostly on an access road and on in to the finish. One of the toughest trails I have done in a long time. Great to see a few old friends, and meet several new ones. No trail pictures, just one from the start.     That wraps it up for this trip, another super shiggy trail with the KL Harriettes, and 5 hash trails over the past week. Many thanks to Neil & Sim Campbell and Opera for the rides to run sites (and thanks to Hash Flash for the many excellent trail pictures).

    Great to see some old friends, and as always . . . I have been fortunate to make several new friends here in KL. I even managed to run my lifetime 3500th hash trail on Saturday (yea, I keep count. A lot of hashers I know do the same). Tomorrow it is back to the airport for an overnight trip to my next adventure.    Читать далее
