    Angeles City H3 #2459

    A bit cooler today, and the trail was much more related to running . . . although this is mostly a walking hash. I pushed on and ran the trail, which was 6 kms, with many beautiful vistas and great dirt tracks. Big pack, seemed like 75 to 80 hashers. Pictures tell the story. Very fun hash, and circle was good fun with lots of singing.Leggi altro

    A brief history of hashing in the Philippine Islands . . .

    The first hash club to start on the Philippine Islands was the Manila H3 founded by James 'Ratcatcher' Howard on 22 May 1972. He came over from Indonesia where he had been running with the Jakarta H3, and was assisted by Paul Bono, Fred Smoot, and Paul Simons. This club did not last long, as the second coming of the Manila H3 was founded by David Jenkins on 28 Apr 1975, with the assistance of Turkey Tom Noonan.
    The history of the Manila H3 has been recorded by long time resident and local legend ‘Squatta’ in his “Poore Squatta’s Almanack.”

    Just 3 years later, the Angeles City H3 (a.k.a. The Volcanic Ash' and originally named the Clark USAF Base H3) was found by Bill Booker on 19 Aug 1978. He had been hashing with the Manila H3, and was assisted by Walt Daniels and James ‘Silver Fox’ Gillard.
    Since both the original and follow on Manila H3 was men only, the opportunity for the ladies to get involved finally happened when the Manila Harriettes was founded by Robin sometime in 1980. She was assisted by Judith Vaughn.

    The Manila Mixed H3 was founded by Malcolm 'Lamb-Butt' Lambert on 14 Feb 1982. Lamb-Butt was assisted by Mike Gawthorpe, Olivia Gawthrope, Henning Jakobsen, and Nikolai Stettevollin.

    The La Union H3 was founded by Bob 'Cobra' Chambers on 20 Nov 1983. Cobra had been hashing in Papua New Guinea with the Port Moresby H3, and was assisted by Wayne 'Wicked Mudguard' Ward, Ray 'Veteran' Bruce, and Rob 'Malibog' Denny.

    The original Puerto Galera H3 was founded by Eric 'Digit' McGaw in Oct 1986. Digit had been hashing with the Manila H3, and was assisted by Andy 'The Fat One' McGaw. This club does not appear to have lasted long, as the second coming of the Puerto Galera H3 was founded by John 'Capt'n Malibog' Molyneaux on 8 Oct 1990. He had arrived from Hong Kong where he was running with the Wanchai H3, and was assisted by David 'Moby Dick' Austin and Chuck 'Coral Garden Walrus' Driver.

    The Olongapo H3 was founded by Valerie 'Toe-Ma-Toe' Trader on 16 May 1987. She had been running in California with the San Diego H3.

    Wrapping up the 1980s, the Angeles Beach H3 (a.k.a. British Empire & American Colonies H3) was founded by Rob ‘Malibog’ Denny on 20 Jul 1987 as a splinter group from the Angeles City H3. He was assisted by five others; in all they were called the ‘Gang of Six.’

    NOW . . . getting to the point . . . The Corona H3 is a splinter hash off of the Angeles City H3 as a result of the COVID Pandemic. It was founded by "Egghead" back on 22 Mar 2020, more details to follow on that, but here is the scoop on today's trail.

    Local hashers can make their own way to the start, but most choose to meet at Harriette's Place to ride in the Hash Truck (the overflow go in a jeepnee as needed). It was about a 35 minute ride out to the run site, way out beyond where the pavement ends.

    The Corona H3 is known for their more physical trail requirements, to put it bluntly, and today was no exception. It was only 6+ kms, but took most of us well over 2 hours to complete, due to the extreme hills, bamboo forest, ditches, gullies, shit to climb over (and under), and all the other glorious shiggy. There was water, there were climbs, BUT, there was NO PAVEMENT. What a great day.

    After finishing trail, the hares served us with a BBQ and there was plenty of hash beer. We had the chance to jump in the pool to cool off (OH, did I mention it was close to 38C (near 100F), so it was enough to regenerate enough energy for circle. After lighting the bonfire, we circled up for an hour or more of great entertainment. You'll just have to come out and experience that for yourselves. What a great day on the hash.

    Bangkok Monday H3 #2204

    Another hot and humid day, just the way I like it. Nothing makes that first beer taste better than getting a good sweat going on trail.

    I don't think that our hare, Khlong Dump, had anything in mind for the shape of his trail, but it vaguely makes an outline, take a look for yourself. It was explained as a long trail, nearly 9 kms, but if you have to break checks, it can easily add some distance.

    We had one visitor from San Francisco, well actually England, but . . . this led to the funniest moment of the day. In circle, the RA, 4x2 called in his own wife for the first down down, stating that as they pulled in and saw me chatting with the visitor, she said . . . "Oh Look, Hazukashii brought his mother." Well, since the visitor, Just Sam, is younger than me, it drew a huge laugh. I got another laugh when singing a down down for someone else . . . Why where they born so beautiful . . . and got to the part, "They may be a joy to my mother . . ." pointing to the visitor. Good times.

    Other than that, our visitor was also awarded the Prick of the Week. Honors to her.

    Another club I had the opportunity to set trail for the first time, after a couple dozen visits over the decades. Managed to find some dirt tracks out in Lat Krabang, near BKK airport . . . along with a couple railroad track and river crossings. Had about 30 hashers turn up for this 8 km soiree.     Venturing way out of the city, Kamikaze took us on an adventure in the rice fields of Nong Chok (about 50 kms away), and it was a free hash shirt day so thanks to the hares for that as well. Trail was all on wide open spaces, as the photos will attest. Fresh air for all. Pretty good sized pack, but I did not count them, maybe 25+ attended. Another great day on the hash.Leggi altro

    Bangkok Harriettes #2255

    All hail the Harriettes, on their 44th Anniversary. The Bangkok Harriettes had their first run on 17 March 1982. Having previously hashed with the Jakarta Harriettes, the founder . . . Janet Baker, with the assistance of Christine Morf, set about to get the Bangkok Harriettes up and running on a weekly basis on Wednesdays, which they continue to do to this day. There was a brief period where they changed their name to the Bangkok Wednesday Hash, but that lasted less than a year, returning it to Bangkok Harriettes.

    Often referred to as the ‘Friendliest Hash in Bangkok, Janet Baker explained the founding like this . . .

    “Tony ‘Godfather’ Erswell urged Christine Morf and me to start the Bangkok Harriettes, as he felt there were a number spouses of active Members of the All Male Bangkok H3 who would like to run and who would enjoy the spirit of the hash. We talked it over and deigned to give it a try. However, we really didn’t think it would fly. We decided to lay the first five runs in Lumpini Park until we got the hang of the whole thing. We had quite a group for our first run, but it was padded with female staffers of the Bangkok Post! Well, we got some good publicity out of it!”

    Although the Bangkok Harriettes started out as a women’s only club, eventually men were allowed and it became a mixed hash. Christine Morf was a regular in the beginning, but departed Thailand after the 50th run, she commented that “After 2-3 months we had trumped up a pack of around 20 harriettes, but I don’t really remember when we allowed men to join. Maybe it was after I left?”

    Well, the MEN are fully entrenched in the Bangkok Harriettes now, and this week we had two MEN hares, Checkless and Gringo, that set an amazing trail out near the golf courses of Ya Sabai Village. It was a well constructed course of 8 kms, taking in several khlong paths, back alleyways, and various other dirt tracks that kept the pack guessing throughout. Circle was short and sweet, and we then recessed into the seafood shop for good eats. Another great day of hashing in Bangkok.    Leggi altro

    My turn to hare again, stepped in when a fellow hasher had to back out last minute. So I quickly went out and started scouting, and found some decent tracks. I only took a few random photos, so does not offer the full vibe, but gives a glimpse. One area that I planned to use, was through a rice field, which when I scouted on Friday, was dry, but when I got there on Saturday afternoon, had been flooded again. Would have been ankle deep mud (or deeper) to get across. Decided to run them around on the road (which ended up being one of a few down downs due to excessive pavement).

    It was another hot day here in Bangkok, but we still had about 25 hashers turn up, all good. There were a lot more dogs out on Saturday, than there were during scouting, so had to alter some of the intended turns a bit, but it all worked out in the end.
    Next hare will be next weekend for Siam Sunday H3, after that we'll see what is happening with INTERGULF, guess I will visit Angeles City for the first time.    Leggi altro

    Not gonna lie on this one . . . there were a ton of long straightaways, that crush your soul. You run along, and turn a corner, and you can see several hundred meters ahead, and the pack is spread out along the whole length. Once you get to the end, you turn a corner, and the format repeats.

    BUT, the trail was well marked, and in the end we all finished and had a good time. Circle punished the hares enough to make it even, and all was right in the hash world. So there you have it, constructive criticism works every time. Life is grand, and ON ON!    Leggi altro

    A bit cooler this evening, made for a good run around Bangkok. Smaller pack of about 20, we started out with several zig zags that led into a tough check, that kept us guessing for a while. We then found marks and that led us into the beer check. That led us through a door out onto the khlong path.

    We then worked our way back through the streets until we caught up to the walkers that started about 30 minutes before us, just a few minutes before the finish. Good trail, good day for running, and always great to be in Bangkok.    Leggi altro

    Another great day on the hash here in Bangkok. Small pack of about 24, and the trail had plenty of shiggy. True trail was supposed to be 6 something kms, but the hare confessed that he had done a bit over 8 to set it, and many of us in the pack ran over 8 kms . . . so there is all that.

    Fresh off our big 2500 event last weekend, we return to normal trails with an excellent Pork Finder trail. All was well for the first half, then we hit a check that stumped us for some time . . . but eventually we figured it out and were on our way to the beer.

    We had a large crowd for a regular weekly trail, with several returners and a few visitors as well. Temps were a bit cooler than we have had over the past few weeks, so all was well on the hash.    Leggi altro

    I was feeling pretty weak at the start, after having scouted trail earlier in the day, wandering about 10K out in the sun. But it was a hash, so time to rally. We had about 30 hashers turn up for this nighttime trail, and off we go.

    There were limited checks, so the pack got spread out. We pulled it all together in the end, and all was well. Circle was short and to the point, and then dinner. Fun on the hash here in Thailand.    Leggi altro

    We straggled in to the start point, in the blazing sunlight of about 35 degrees C, and endured the wait. Once we set off on trail, the sun began its slow dip over the horizon and things eventually cooled down. Trail was supposed to be a short endeavor, but the hares decided some crazy checks were in order, so we scrambled around in all directions looking for the on out trail. Half of the checks were broken in due course, but the other half were painstakingly examined for an extended period . . . if it looks like kms 4, 5, and 6 are close together, that is because we were befuddled . . . BUT, we eventually figured it out and made our way back to the beer. HooooRay.

    Today, we celebrated run 2200, and it was an exciting event. Lots of visitors, I think we had over 60 turn up, which is more than twice our normal attendance. Trail was over on the peninsula on the other side of the Chao Phraya River, so lots of greenery on trail.
    Circle was raucous, with lots of chatter, so hard to follow, but all in fun. Many thanks to Nibbles as the GM and hare, and the other organizers.    Leggi altro

    Bangkok H3 2500.1 - Hangover Trail

    The steamy summer season has arrived here in Bangkok, and every day is hotter than HELL. We met for a hangover trail today at NOON, and it was HOT. But, we still managed 7 kms of sweaty joy running through Chinatown.

    It was an A to B trail, ending right on the river shore, where we had cool breezes, aided by cold beer, to cool us off. Another great day on the hash.    Leggi altro

    I doubt Bill Panton was even thinking about the 2500th run when he started this club back in 1977, but here we are. It was super hot today, but we all still managed to complete the 9 km trail through the open fields of Ayutthaya, the old capital of Thailand.
    We had about 80 hashers turn up for this wonderous occasion, and the trail, circle, and dinner were all well organized and fun. None of us will be alive for the 5000th hash, so hope we all made the most of today. On On.    Leggi altro

    We started from the same place as the trail on Saturday, fortunately the trail was mostly different (but did cross the old trail a couple times). It was a nice, warm evening, and the pack of 35 was ready for the adventure. The start had a bit of street, but we soon hit the khlong paths and made our way around the On Nut area.

    Circle had a few laughs, with all the visitors in town for the event weekend. Somehow, some way, can you believe it, ended up as TOTW. Whatever?!?!? 🙂

    While today was the actual 2200 run, we will be celebrating it next week since the GM has pissed off on vacation to Bhutan. 🙂

    We had a fun trail today, as we skirted in and out of the campuses of several local universities and colleges. It was a well marked trail, but since you could see a long way in all directions, the pack did a whole lot of shortcutting towards the direction the pack was going. IN the end, we all finished, with a smile on our face . . . and a cold beer in our hands. What a great day to be alive.Leggi altro

    Some relatively new terrain, even for the Bangkok old timers . . . and a well marked, fun trail through many fields and khlong paths. True trail was about 7.5 kms, but I had my weekend Garmin challenge to cover for a 10 K, so did a bit of extra scurrying around. Brought along a couple visitors from Tampa, so they had their first exposure to Thailand hashing, and had a blast. Well done to them.

    One week away from the big 2500 trail weekend of events, but we still had time for fun at 2499. Noriega strapped on the paper sack and set a trail around On Nut. It was a well marked trail, and mostly interesting, except that one km long section on the sidewalk along the 8 lane highway . . . deafeningly noisy. 🙂

    Yes Yes . . . its good to be back. Tonight we had a city run, with mostly streets and sidewalk, but it did have some good khlong paths intermixed with fun night time in the dark running. I was feeling good, but no pictures on trail . . . was clicking off 8 min kms while looking down every side street for a possible turn . . . which there were few, but you have to keep looking. It was a fun night run.

    Circle was a hoot, as we were crammed into a small craft beer shop, all 25 + of us, and the hares shouted us for some pizzas. Another great night on the hash. Friday is a scouting day, then next trail on Saturday. On On!!!    Leggi altro
