    Famous Old Bridges

    Everyone will remember the song:

    "Sur le pont d'Avignon
    On y danse, on y danse,
    Sur le pont d'Avignon
    On y danse tous en rond"

    Well we weren't really able to do any dancing when we visited the bridge in Avignon because the Mistral wind was so strong - we were told to be sure to hold onto Claire given the strong gusts - but we got to learn about the history of the renowned bridge, how it was built over several centuries and then eventually mostly destroyed.

    Then we braved the winds (70 km/hr gusts) and pedalled to the next old famous bridge on our itinerary for the day, the Pond du Gard. This was a Roman aqueduct bridge built close to 2000 years ago, and still a stunning work of architecture. We crossed the bridge over the Gardon River, then carried on to find a campsite with some wind protection as the Mistral continued to blow through the night.
