    Nostalgia

    May 20, 2017 in Hungary

An unlikely choice of activity for a sunny day, we spent this afternoon in an indoors soft play. Nóra has been asking us to go there for weekz so she can sit for hours in the tiny plastic car she so loved when she was about half her current age. So we went. She barely fits in it, but the love has not been lots. Emma discovered the trampoline ( first circus artist of the family..?) and lots of vehicles to try. Followed by a pizza and pasta at Vapiano, and crowned by a blitz shopping in the supermarket, our day is now complete. Don't say we don't know how to party...Read more

    It's been a year!

    May 24, 2017 in Hungary

The school year is almost over, and Nora and the Blue Group (Kék csoport) had their first year graduation party today. The weeks long practice of songs, dances and poems was shown off in full glory to all the parents (younger siblings not allowed not to steal the limelight) by the nervous kids and proud teachers (Márti-néni and Kriszti-néni). My favourite was the song about a three-legged chair (Három-lábu-szék). A great show, and a great year is behind us now- so many new friends for the kids (and for us!). Our babies are now officially "the middle group" instead of the "little ones" - congrats and well done, everyone!Read more

    Meatsweats

    June 3, 2017 in Hungary

Team BBQ for all permanent Novoschool staff at our place. There was meat, there were salads, there was meat, and there was meat. There was also sun, wine, laughter, presents (a flight over Budapest for Gergo and me- whohoo!) and more meat. What a lovely day (With Éva, Marcsi, Merci, Trixi, Tunde, Anita and Csaba).

    Cousin love

    July 10, 2017 in Hungary

Shalev, Dana and little Zohar are visiting us before taking a trip to Austria and the hood with their Italian friends ( who they met years ago at a pizzeria in Rome!). Zohar quietly observes everything that her older cousins have to deal with in a two-child family and hopefully only learns the good things. Perhaps she thinks having a dog ( poor Fonzee has been left at home! ) is better than sharing your space with othrr noisy kids, but she keeps smiling and enduring it all, be it Nóra's love or Emmas mixed feelings and occassional show of irritation as Zohar dares to look at Her Stuff. But nothing beats ice cream and proper berries which there seems to be plenty of on this trip. ( Dana's post-trip task is to get in touch with the Hebrew academy in Israel and get them to name the berries properly - currants, goosberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries all seem to be referred to as Petel. Shalev agrees...)Read more

All the way from down under

    July 23, 2017 in Hungary

Marina, our dear friend from university and my ex flatmate in London lives in Australia now. On the way to visit her parents in Riga, Budapest became the stopover of choice and we meet again after 4 years! Since then her son Alex has been born , she has beaten cancer, gone back to work in a senior role in finance, involved herself in lots of not for profit activity of doing good, and in general has created a life that does not cease to amaze me, all az asingle parent, far away from her own parents and supportive old friends. It was great to meet, catch up and play with the kids. Who knows when we will meet again, but its nice to see that the distance hasn't changed much between us. Love is inter-continental!Read more

    An end of an era

    July 24, 2017 in Hungary

Last days in Budapest before we travel to France, and last days of Merci as Emma's nanny, as Emma will be starting nursery in September, and Merci starts a full time teacher's job in Szentendre. Merci has been with us for a year, and it is hard for both sides to part. While we and Nóra loved Merci from the first moment, Emma warmed slowly (screaming for the first three weeks of being left with Merci alone). That is all long forgotten now, and it is clear that Merci is Emma's first choice for a playmate. We will all miss you, Merci, and hope to have you visiting us often! Love, love, love.Read more

    New property

    June 29, 2017 in Hungary

The girls are getting a new wooden playhouse - after hours of internet research (trying to balance the price and the looks, as usual...) and weeks of waiting in complete radio silence from the seller, the house arrived flat packed, smelling of freshly cut pine. A few screws here and there, and viola!

    Shalom to Sunday School

    June 25, 2017 in Hungary

The Hebrew school is closing for the summer. Nora has been coming to weekly Sunday lessons with Vered and Iris for half a year now - improved her Hebrew and made new friends. She only recently started speaking Hebrew to me - for almost 4 years it was me speaking Hebrew to Nora and her responding back in Hungarian. The Sunday school, together with my (now) strict insistence, have done wonders, and although it is still not as fluent as her Hungarian, Nora now uses only Hebrew with me. Shalom, Sunday school, it's been great!Read more

    Sunset on the Danube

    June 23, 2017 in Hungary

The longer evenings call for some nightlife, and the kids deserve some too. We set off to north pest, arrived at a dodgy looking car park, and discovered this sunset gem with a relaxed crowd sipping beer, walking dogs and chatting away. The promised Estonian band was not the highlight of the evening, but the vibe of the place was exactly what we needed. Salut!
