      Wandelen langs de Donau

      19. huhtikuuta, Unkari ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

      Run at Margaret Island

      18. kesäkuuta 2022, Unkari ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

Margaret Island in the middle of the Danube turned out to be a great place for a run. They have a track around the island just for runners.

You pass by a mini zoo, medieval monasteries, and Palatinus baths. - SeanLue lisää

      Budapest

      16. kesäkuuta 2022, Unkari ⋅ ⛅ 82 °F

      Miles: 10.1 Steps: 24873
      Flights stairs: 31

Budapest is famous for their thermal baths, so we went to Gellert thermal baths - built in 1918. It was gorgeous. Very unique in that they not only had varying temperatures of warm/hot pools from 96° ranging up to 104° (which is actually uncomfortably hot) - they also had ice cold baths along side them from 50-65°! It was exhilarating moving from one pool to the next. We had a VERY relaxing time laying out in the sun for 4 or 5 hours and dipping in the different pools to either warm up or cool down.

We then hit the Great market hall - a massive shopping center built in 1897 that the locals still use for meats and produce. Really neat to walk around and see how people shop here.

Everywhere we go in Europe there are remembrances and memorials to WW2 - the one we saw today was heart breaking. In Budapest in 1944-1945, the Arrow Cross militiamen executed nearly 20,000 Jews at the Danube river. They lined them up in rows and had them remove their shoes, which were valuable and could be sold - and then shot them, having their bodies fall into the river. An artist in 2005 made a monument - “Shoes on the Danube bank” - sculpting period appropriate shoes out of iron. It was very moving to see these lined up on the promenade, especially the child’s shoes. As I sat there I could almost see the history play out before me.

After that we headed to Margaret Island - it’s literally an island right near the city. There’s running, walking, biking trails everywhere - game fields - just a great space. And of course they had a fountain set to music - I seem to be drawn to them!! Watched it for at least an hour.

Jordan ended up leaving me there to meet up with a friend from high school, and I stayed and hung out at the island. All of a sudden a GIANT storm blew in SO fast. I had no idea what hit me. And on top of that my SIM card quit working and I lost all cell reception. I didn’t know what metro to take back, no one to call even if I could … and lightning everywhere. Definitely an experience. And it was 10:30 at night. So I walked — almost 4 miles, in the dark, in the pouring rain, lighting exploding - towards the area I thought the hostel was in. I eventually made it to a McDonald’s with free wifi and was able to pull up my google maps to get myself back, but it was pretty scary for an hour or so. The excitement of traveling to places I’m completely unfamiliar with!

Quote of the day: “You and I remember Budapest very differently”. (Marvel, referring to Jordan and My evenings)

      Margaret Island

      3. kesäkuuta 2022, Unkari ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

Checked out Margaret Island today. It's in the middle of the Danube and is a great spot to feel like you are getting away from the city (while still being in the middle of it) and to bike or walk or play sports. They have a musical fountain which is really cool, as well as various sports complexes, historical buildings, and so forth. Afterwards, got Thai food at this place where you could watch the family cook and it felt like I was eating in someone's home, so that was a nice family-owned restaurant. Then checked out Szimpla Kert - the most popular ruin bar - which was really unique, then went to a techno boat afterwards.Lue lisää

      Margaretaön

      15. maaliskuuta 2020, Unkari ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

      Margareteninsel

      18. helmikuuta 2020, Unkari ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

      Tour Day 7 - Budapest

      15. heinäkuuta 2023, Unkari ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Today we woke up and I decided to go running with Erin due to the amount of sights in Budapest. We ran to Margaret Island which is connected to the city via a bridge. It was a beautiful morning. The island is MASSIVE, with a swimming pool, mini zoo, small football stadium and Erin even ran past an outdoor cinema. Erin loved the run around the river and I enjoyed a walk around to see a giant lego lion. We got breakfast then headed off to a walking tour of the city. Our guide was funny and passionate about giving good tips for visiting the city. We met a lovely German woman called Annie, who was around our age and travelling by herself. We got to know her on the tour while seeing beautiful buildings in Budapest. Highlight of pettiness was seeing the communist Russian monument that has been left by the Russians (in an agreement with the Hungarians) right by the American embassy. The Americans have erected statues of 2 presidents standing quite close as a retaliation move we think.
The tour ended at the parliament building which is an absolutely stunning building and puts parliament house to shame. We then walked to the shoes on the Denue which is a memorial to the Jews who were killed and pushed into the river during the Nazi period. They were told to leave their shoes as leather was valuable. Just a sad but fitting tribute.
We then headed to get Langos for lunch, which is fried bread recommended with sour cream, cheese and garlic. We actually met our new friend Annie there and had lunch together. Next we headed to the House of Terror which is a museum about the rule of terror by both the Germans and the Soviets with a heavy focus on the Soviet occupation. The 'house' was the 'headquarters' of both these regimes and we even got to see places where people were tortured and wrongly imprisoned. It was a lot of information and very emotional. We then decided to head back to the hotel, and outside was Budapest Pride march! There was bright colours, music and we got to walk along for a short period. It was awesome to see.
We freshened up and headed to the ruins bar which was a massive old building that has about 6 bars inside and now covered in graffiti. It had a super cool vibe and even had some market stalls inside. Then we headed towards our river cruise, got lost and had a drink in a questionable bar.
The river cruise was very fun, we sat with Marlene and Paul who after hearing about the wine debarcle bought us a corkscrew... We had great food, great wine and saw the city at night. It was beautiful. Everyone got along really well, there was a large glass of grapa being passed around to drink which helped... Everyone has been so nice and have such interesting stories, it has made the trip really interesting.
We walked back to the hotel, Paul has smuggled white wine out for us and we chatted with 2 guys we hadn't spoke to much. They are a gay couple and live in America, they told us that the pride march today was actually illegal as kids under a certain age cannot be exposed to LGBTQI+ ideas. It was a good conversation and we even considered going out with them but as soon as we hit the hotel it was bed time. We didn't drink the white wine either. Don't tell Paul...

      Margaret Island

      24. syyskuuta 2022, Unkari ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Yesterday we were a little too productive ticking soo much off of our bucket list. So today we took a more laid back day starting at an island in the middle of the canal. It was beautiful. It was so green and great running/bike lanes. Nice to have the greenery so accessible from the city :)Lue lisää
