Staying at Emerald Palace Family Hostel
Woohoo!! Finally Ann’s backpack has been delivered to our accommodation and just in the knick of time! Mine is still sitting at the Fiumicino Airport, chillin’ in the lost and forgotten luggage room, never to be processed or seen. We head out to decathlon so I can get a backpack and the essentials for this trip, Ann has also loaned me some of her clothes and George has gifted me some gloves. We are now on track to walk out of Florence in the morning. George and I find a nice little restaurant, enjoy our last Italian meal in Florence accompanied by a bottle of fiasco wine! The last time George had this type of wine was in 1973, it was lovely. We finish dinner and head back to our respective lodgings for the night, eager to start the Way of St. Frances tomorrow. 👣Meer informatie

      Florence

      22 april, Italië ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

We are up early this morning as we have a 12 hour bus tour of Siena, San Gimignano and Pisa. My favourite part of today though was the lunch at the vineyard, our hosts were really entertaining and fun. The food and wine were amazing, I could have just settled in here all afternoon. It is late when we get back to our accommodation and we basically fall into bed, it’s been a big day, but a really good one.Meer informatie

      Florence

      21 april, Italië ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We are meeting George at 8:45am, we have a tour booked of the Pitti Palace, Palatine Gallery and Boboli Gardens at 9:15am. It is quite cold as we leave our accommodation, but the sun slowly starts shining its rays upon us and parts of the street as we walk. We cross over the famous Ponte Vecchio bridge, the shop traders are no where in sight and we basically have the bridge to our selves. We take this opportunity to snap a few pictures then continue on our way. Our tour guide does a fabulous job, explaining the history of this amazing palace, the gardens and Florence it self. Our tour wraps up after 3 hours and it’s now time for some lunch. We find a lovely ristorante in the piazza and settle in with amazing food, beautiful wine and great company. Once lunch is done I spend some time shopping for some essentials, the amount of tourists here is insane and I dread to think what it’s like in the summer months. I find all that I need and head back to our accommodation to work on finding my backpack and updating my diary. The rest of the afternoon flys by, before I know it, it’s time for dinner and again the food here does not disappoint. After a long enjoyable dinner, we head our separate ways and call it a night. We are all still adjusting to the time difference.Meer informatie

      Florence

      20 april, Italië ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

We wake at around 10:30am, still feeling groggy and not quiet right, but we need to change the trajectory of this adventure and get to having some fun, eat some amazing Italian food and soak up some history of this beautiful city, Florence! But first we meet up with our friend George, he comes to our room and it’s so good to see him, he hasn’t changed a bit since I saw him nearly 2 years ago. From here we head outside and are hit in the face with the cold and rain, we quickly retreat back into the corridor and we head to reception to ask for an umbrella. We are now prepared for the outdoors. We are going on a wine window walking tour that ends up being just the 3 of us and Chiara, our tour guide. Chiara takes us to various wine windows through out the center of Florence, explaining the history of these holes in the walls, and the part they have played over the centuries, at the end of the tour we are able to order a wine through one of these windows then go down into the cellar to drink it and enjoy some beautiful Italian food. What a fabulous first day in Florence, the vibe is great, fun, friendly and safe. We have a relatively early night tonight as we are still adjusting to the northern hemisphere. So I will leave it here.Meer informatie

    • Dag 3

      Dubai to Florence

      19 april, Italië ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

      Staying at Relais Piazza Signoria
By 12:45am our flight is CANCELLED. The only way we know about this is because our departure gate info board updates to cancelled, it is not until about an hour later a staff member comes and tells us that we no longer have a flight, it has been cancelled and our only options are to go to the connections desk and try to get booked on another flight or to go to the hotel desk (which is outside the airport and once you go out you can’t get back in without a boarding pass) and organise ourself a hotel and emirates will contact us when they have a flight for us, (there is no time frames given for this to happen, it could be days). I am not keen on leaving the airport, hotels in Dubai are super expensive and we have already heard other peoples stories of having to pay $250.00 for a taxi ride back to the airport and that a lot of area’s in Dubai is still under flood, so it’s more chaotic outside the airport than it is inside the airport. We stay and try to workout what to do……
Thank goodness for Ann, she finds out that an older couple have been given boarding passes to somewhere else and she approaches an emirates staff member asking if there is any possibility of getting a boarding pass to somewhere close to our destination? Very discreetly this staff member secures us our boarding passes to Rome, we are scheduled to leave at 9:15am and we are elated. On our way to the boarding gate we need to negotiate our way around the sea of people that are at the connections desk. There are 3 bays and each bay has one staff member on duty and hundreds of people lined up. It is crazy, people are sleeping on the floor, on staircases, in alcoves where ever they can find room. We get to our gate and wait there, we still haven’t slept a wink and there are no seats available anywhere. It’s either sit on the cold tiled floor or stand, these are the only options. When the time comes to board, we are just busting to get on that plane, the sheer relief when we taxi down the runway and start lifting off the ground is unbelievable to this exhausted traveller. I relax, settle in and watch a movie, knowing that in another few minutes we will get feed. I am somehow unable to sleep on this leg of our journey, I don’t understand why but here we are. I fill my time by chatting with Therese and Peter that are sitting beside me as well as watching movies and eating. We land in Rome and head to Terminal 1 to catch our flight to Florence. And yes you guessed it, it has been delayed by another half hour, so we don’t fly out until 10:15pm. Once we board, we are delayed longer and I know I have hit my limit, I just can’t keep my eyes open. I keep jolting awake, then fall straight back to sleep, I must have slept for near on the whole trip as I remember taking off and then landing in Florence but nothing. Once landed and off the plane we catch a taxi to our hotel. We basically walking in have a quick shower and fall into bed.

      Florence, Italy (Days 1 & 2)

      18 oktober 2023, Italië ⋅ 🌧 63 °F

      What we did:
      - Off to Lindsay and Jenna’s study abroad home! Our train from Rome got in around 1ish. We grabbed a coffee in a square by our Airbnb and then went to the famous Pino’s for sandwiches. Two of Trent’s friends say it’s their all time favorite restaurant in the world! Family run counter serve spot and it was great. Trent amused them by getting in line a 2nd time for round 2. No shame!
      - We then walked around town for a while to enjoy how cool of a city it is! Big fans. Nice views from the Ponte Vecchio bridge and very cool to see the famous Duomo cathedral.
      - We then stopped into the wine bar “Pitti Gola and Cantina” and wow this place was awesome. We each got a flight of three Tuscan wines (Sangiovese grape). The wine guy was a som and gave us so much information. Great vibes and good wine!
      - We then rushed up to the viewpoint at the top of Piazzale Michelangelo. Wow! Stunning views across all of Florence. We bought a big Peroni from a local stand to split while we enjoyed the sunset over the city. Tons of people hanging out on the stairs, musicians playing Italian tunes and great weather. Italy is awesome.
      - Post sunset we headed over to dinner. We got sat in a table between two other couples and immediately felt eyes from our neighbors…. We order our meal and immediately buddy guy pipes up with “So where you guys from?!” Oh no. Abort. Abort. Nightmare scenario. They were 60ish from South Carolina and we were not sure if they were a couple, coworkers, siblings or friends, but man they were weird. We politely answer a few questions and tried to give the obvious cold shoulder. Buddy guy keeps peppering us with questions and ooong and awwing over our wine and steak. “We wish we had the confidence to order red wine. We only order white wine”. WTF? They then tell us a story about how they hated Milan because they got pickpocketed three different times over a few days! What on earth could they be doing? He then made a scene and called the waiter over to tell him that the pasta was way too salty and he can’t believe they’d serve this food. The waiter had no idea what to say (considering that Florence doesn't historically cook with much salt - see saltless bread in fun facts). Finally as we’re nearing the end of our meal they pack up and leave. Good riddance South Carolina, thanks for another brutally cringy interaction with Americans abroad. We grab some gelato at one of Jenna’s favorite “Gelataria La Carraia” and called it a night. So good!
      - We ended up sleeping in pretty late as it was super rainy and gross. We started off by grabbing sandwiches at another local spot - we voted it way better than Pinos actually! We walked around for a while and tried to see the “David” statue but tickets were sold old out. We settled for the replica in the main square.
      - We hit Lindsay’s favorite gelato “Antica Gelateria Florentina”. So good again! Love the creamy Florentine gelato flavors.
      - Sufficiently touristed, we walked to another wine bar, “Le Volpe Y Ulva”, for a glass of Tuscan wine. We then headed back over to the wine bar from the day before “Pitti Gola and Cantina” and got a flight of Chianti’s this time. So good and great vibes!
      - Buzzed and hungry we head to dinner for some more Florentine classic food and chianti. We then headed to bed for our morning wine tour! WE will definitely need to dry out when we get back to the states.

      What we ate:
      - Lunch #1 at Pinos where Trent had two paninis and half of Stephs. Very good!
      - Night #1 dinner at Angolino's of a massive Florentine T-bone and potatoes. They are known for massive steaks that they cook rare. It was a bit rare for us so can’t say we were too impressed.
      - Lunch #2 at Antico Vinaio for more paninis! Love a good Italian sammy.
      - Night #2 dinner at Cucina in Torre where Trent got a redemption steak and Steph got the famous Florentine truffle pasta. Redemption steak was delicious and truffle was unreal!

      Fun facts:
      - In WW2 Germany occupied Florence and upon retreat had destroyed all the bridges except for the Ponte Vecchio. Hitler loved it’s uniqueness so much he forbid it’s destruction
      - Gelato was invented in Florence!
      - Wish we were art and museum people. According to UNESCO, 60% of the world’s most important art is in Italy and half are in Florence. So 1/3 of the world's art is there. And we just drank wine 🤙
      - Florentine bread is traditionally unsalted. “The reigning theory is that salt was taxed too heavily in medieval Florence, so bakers left it out. They never looked back, not even when the tax was lifted, growing affectionately attached to their baked aberration.”

Beautiful and overly expensive at this time of the year. What i liked most is the unique Duomo (we didn't queue to get inside tho) and the bridges over the river. Surprisingly, the food is much better than in Milan.Meer informatie

      Florens!
