My friend Marcella emailed me yesterday to let me know that Nan Schulman from our Camino group in Oregon was volunteering as a hospitalera "somewhere on the Meseta". It turned out that the town she's in was a good stopping point for me today.

This is a very quiet town of about 150 people. Quite a few of the buildings are built of straw and adobe.Read more

Early morning walk

Since I took an alternate route yesterday to stay at the albergue that my friend Nan was volunteering at I had a longish walk (about 12 miles) before breakfast. I started just as the sun was coming up.Read more

I'm leaving the Camino Francés - the most popular route, which I've done twice, and starting on the Camino del Salvador, which has much fewer people, and is more mountainous.

Day one of Camino del Salvador

There was a mailbox with a notebook along the trail today for those walking this route to sign in on. There were also some first aid supplies inside.
I also walked through oak forests and by fields with wild lavender, and if course more wild poppies. I didn't see any other walkers until I was just a couple of miles from my destination.
I also thought that there would be a café in the small town that I walked through about 1.5 miles into my walk. There was one, but since it was Saturday it wasn't open yet. So I had to make do with some peanut M&Ms until I finally reached a town with a bar/café after about 13 miles.

A looooong day

I decided to do a 30 km walk today which usually wouldn't take me more than 5-7 hours, but because of the terrain and lots of ups and downs I was walking for over 10 hours.
The trail was very overgrown in parts, and many parts were very rocky and steep, which made it very slow going.
I decided to do this long walk because the weather was really good for it - temperatures in the 70s and partly cloudy. And there's a good chance of rain tomorrow, so I'm glad that I did it today, even though I'm very tired.
Since I crossed over into Asturias today, which is known for its sidra (cider) I'm having dinner in a sidreria.Read more

Just a few pictures from Oviedo, which is the end point for the Camino del Salvador. The Cathedral here houses many relics, including the cloth that is said to have covered Jesus's face. However the one on display is only a replica.Read more

I wasn't expecting a Woody Allen statue

I was surprised to see this statue of Woody Allen in Oviedo. Apparently the city awarded him one of its highest honors back in 2002.

Back on the Camino del Norte

I walked from Oviedo to Avilés today, so I'm back on the Camino del Norte, which I almost completed last year until I got shin splints and had to stop walking.
Today's walk was about 18 miles, mostly through green hills and farms, and usually close to the road. No overgrown remote trails like I had experienced the last few days.Read more

Avilés to El Pito

Fairly easy walk today - about 16 miles. Finally had someone to talk to in English! A nice college student from Singapore. I resisted the urge to walk too far, and stopped around 1:30 today.

Piñera to Tapia de Casariego

It was on this stretch last year that I walked too fast and got shin splints. I'm happy to report that I made it today uninjured. 😊
And additionally I walked an extra 2.5 km to be closer to the coast, which was beautiful.Read more

Fields, farms and stone buildings

A nice cool day for walking, and no big hills! There are lots of old stone buildings in various conditions, and much of the trail today was lined with low stone walls made of large pieces of slate.

Finisterre - The End of the World!

Maybe not the literal end of the world, but the end of my Camino this year. I had a nice short walk here today, and made the requisite walk to the lighthouse and the zero kilometer marker. It's an absolutely perfect day - 70° with blue skies and fluffy white clouds. And yes, the water really is that color!Read more
