Timișoara is a Romanian center of education and industry, located about 540 km north-west of the capital Bucharest, about 315 km east of Budapest, the capital of Hungary, and about 150 km northeast of Belgrade, the capital of Serbia.
In December 1989, clashes between the people and the government led to anti-government demonstrations throughout Romania that escalated to Ceausescu's execution.
