Leaving Labrador 离开拉布拉多

Day twenty-eight 563 km
We left Labrador City after 8:00 AM. After 20 km on Highway 500 we entered Quebec, and the road changed into highway 389. The 540 km on HW389 drive to overnight stay location Camping Manic 2 was scenic but challenging.
About Highway 389
- The only road connecting Labrador to the rest of Canada
- Has 2 gravel sections (75 km and 95 km) - very dusty when dry
- Many steep hills and sharp turns
The Hydro Dams
We passed two big power stations:
- Manic-5 and Manic-2 — they provide electricity to much of Quebec and the northeastern U.S.
- Both offer tours, but:
• We missed Manic-5's tour by 30 minutes
• Manic-2's only tour is at 1:30 PM - too late for us
Travel Tips
- Fill up gas whenever possible - few stations along this route
- Bring extra water and snacks
- Check tour schedules in advance if you want to visit the dams
This road is remote but beautiful. Just be prepared for driving condition on the gravel parts.
