Loin’s Mound 滑铁卢狮子岗

On June 18, 1815, Napoleon was defeated by the Allied European forces at Waterloo (in present-day Belgium). Nearly 200,000 troops took part in the battle, with total casualties exceeding 47,000. The Lion’s Mound was built to commemorate this historic battle. Rising 43 metres high, it is reached by climbing 225 steps and offers a panoramic view of the entire battlefield. At its summit stands a 4.5-metre-tall, 28-ton cast-iron lion, symbolizing victory and peace.
Standing here today and looking out over the former battlefield, it is impossible not to imagine the fierce and bloody fighting that once took place. It is also a powerful reminder of the precious value of peace.
