  • Gander is a small town located at the northeastern part of Newfoundland island, with population around 11 thousand. On Sept 11, 2001 Gander International Airport (YQX) received 38 international flights and 4 military flights, Gander hosted 6,700 stranded passengers and crews. A piece of steel beam from the NYC burnt down twin tower was presented to Gander as significant symbol of thanks for the selfless role during that time.
Gander has been heavily related to North Atlantic aviation history, most of its streets are named after famous aviators.
During the WWII Gander was the transportation hub for the air ferry between North America and Europe. Some 10,000 military personnel were stationed here, and about 20,000 fighter and bomber flights stoped here en route to Europe. After the war ended, Gander became refuelling stop for transatlantic commercial flights.
By the Trans Canada Highway is the North Atlantic Aviation Museum. Albeit its name, the museum itself was rather small with limited exhibits. The contents were mainly related to the Gander area.

  • Day seventeen 475 km
Today we reserved a site at Sanger Memorial RV Park, Grand Falls-Windsor for one night. There are quite a number of large / super large motorhomes from over all the places, BC, Florida, California, etc., very impressive.
5 min walk there is the beautiful mini park George Park for the public by the Exploits River. The view is stunning with fresh and elegant tranquility after the rain. What a nice surprise.

  • J.T. Cheeseman Provincial Park JT

    16. juni, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Right off of the ferry, in about 5 minutes driver we came to Newfoundland Visitor Information Centre searching for RV site information. Based on the advice from the staff there we should avoid highway driving after the sunset, for the road condition and the frequent roaming wildlife e.g. moose 🫎 and deer 🦌 .
From the map this would be the closet site we can get to before dark, although no reservation we decided to drop in for overnight stay.

  • Onboard the ferry to NL

    16. juni, Gulf of St. Lawrence ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

We arrived to the terminal 1hr15min ahead of departure time, was told at the gate that we were the last vehicle boarding! I thought we must show up one hour ahead, but was two hours. Oh well. Now we are sailing across Cabot Strait.

  • Road trip plan changed

    15. juni, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Our original itinerary was significantly impacted due to my inexperience with camper trailer specifications. When booking the ferry from North Sydney, NS to Argentia, NL back in February, I mistakenly classified our stand-up-height camper as a "low trailer". The consequence? Our reservation was invalid, and we would be definitely denied boarding. Upon realizing the error, I immediately contacted the ferry office, but unfortunately, no “high trailer” spaces were available.
    Revised Travel Plan:
    - Canceled the original ferry booking June 18th overnight crossing to Argentia NL
    - Booked the June 16th ferry to Port aux Basques, NL (a shorter route landing on the island’s west coast)
    - Cancelled our Cape Breton National Park three nights reservation, stay at Whycocomagh overnight instead
Now, we’re reworking our Newfoundland road trip itinerary, though some planned stops may need to be adjusted.

  • Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse

    14. juni, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

    (Ref: novascotia.com)
Nova Scotia is home to over 160 historic lighthouses, but no beacon is as photographed as the one in the vibrant fishing village of Peggy’s Cove.
Built in 1915, Peggy’s Point Lighthouse still keeps watch over surging ocean waves and working lobster boats. Amble over giant rocks worn smooth by the sea and share in the view.
    (Ref: visitpeggyscove.ca)
    RESPECT THE RISK
While the sea and its pounding waves are Peggy’s Cove’s natural attractions, they can also be its most dangerous hazard.
Sudden high waves can happen even on calm and sunny days. All visitors must be mindful of the dangers of the waters surrounding Peggy’s Cove.

  • Swissair Flight 111 Memorial

    14. juni, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Today on the way to Peggy’s Cove we visited Swissair Flight 111 Memorial.
    (Ref: wikipedia)
Swissair Flight 111 (SR111/SWR111) was a scheduled international passenger flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, United States, to Cointrin Airport in Geneva, Switzerland. The flight was also a codeshare flight with Delta Air Lines. On 2 September 1998, the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 performing this flight, registration HB-IWF, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean southwest of Halifax Stanfield International Airport at the entrance to St. Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada. The crash site was 8 kilometres (5 mi; 4 nmi) from shore, roughly equidistant from the small fishing and tourist communities of Peggy's Cove and Bayswater. All 215 passengers and 14 crew members on board the plane were killed, making the crash the deadliest accident in the history of Swissair and the deadliest accident involving the McDonnell Douglas MD-11. It is also the second-deadliest aviation accident to occur in Canada, behind Arrow Air Flight 1285R.
The search and rescue response, crash recovery operation and investigation by the government of Canada took more than four years and cost CA$57 million. The investigation carried out by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) concluded that flammable material used in the aircraft's structure allowed a fire to spread beyond the control of the flight crew, resulting in the crash of the aircraft. Several wide-ranging recommendations were made which were incorporated into newer US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards.
