  • salt & silver journey p.2 - Cerro Rico

    December 27, 2012 in Bolivia ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

We entered the mine of Cerro Rico. Cerro Rico is the name of the impressive mountain which have a size of 4800m. Also the silver mine, which was founded there, is called "Cerro Rico". Today, it's so huge, you need more then 20hours to reach the deepest point of the tunnels. Incredible!

Some "funny" things you have to know: To make some presents for the miners, we bought high percentage alcohol, Coca and dynamite for the miners. Yeah, you're reading correctly, dynamite. You can buy it there in nearby every kiosk. The workers need it to make the gods satisfied. You can see it in the last picture.

Uyuni is a small city in the southwest of Bolivia. It's located in the highlands and close to the Salar de Uyuni, the worlds biggest salt lake and a unique place.

It's one of the biggest salt-production areas in South-America. Our hotel was completely made out of salt.

By there, we started our salt-trip, a three day during trip with jeeps in the south of Bolivia.

    Alpacas and lagoons!

After driving for some hours, we reached a small oasis with an alpaca-farm. Sweet animals with one advantage to lamas: they dont spit so much!
Then we drove to the "laguna capina", a lagoon full with white minerals at the border to Chile.
And no, it isn't hot there! We re higher than 4000m above sea level, we've been just stupid for some funny photos ;-) .

    Still the same day!

The last destination for this day was the "laguna colorado", a brown-red lagoon which gets his color by algae. You could find a lot flamencos there! It was forbidden to walk into the lagoon, because for the native people it's a holy place.

Close to the lagoon we rest for one night in a small cottage. We went out in the evening to climb a small mountain, but it was really cold and windy!

New Year - and my birthday.I never celebrated it so far away from my homeland. And never I had such a good birthday!

We woke up at 4:30am to drive without breakfast to the "sol de la mañana", a vulcan at 5000m above sea level. With the rising sun in minus degrees we experienced this spectacular moment.

After that we visited the "arbol de piedra", a bizarre stony natural rock, polished by wind and rain. There's a legend about it: Once, it was a real tree, but when the spanish conquerors came to Bolivia, the Mayas ask the gods for power, and this tree gave it to them. In this moment, it lost his life-energy and became to stone.
