Hiking - day 4

Today was a short hike that still involved some hills. We took a train from Bohinjska Bastrica to Most na Soci. The train ride took about 45 minutes and was pretty full. In our coach there was a couple from England. They were traveling with friends who were going to be competing in a rowing competition in Bled this weekend. They were going to Most na Soci for a day trip of hiking. The train carries passengers, bikes, and cars.

We got off of the train just as it started sprinkling. We made our way to the center of town and went to a cafe. While drinking coffee, it started to rain harder. We waited until it let up a bit and then put on our raincoats and started out. The Soca river runs through the town and was damned up for a hydroelectric plant creating a lake used for boating, swimming and fishing. It was quiet being it was the middle of the week and off season but there where a few people in the campground.

Not too far into the hike we went into the forest and started the climb up about 250 m. The rain made things just a little bit tricky and slowed us down a bit. Once we got to the top we started down again before leveling out into the town of Tolmin. It really wasn't a long hike, and not a really interesting one, but the rain made us watch our step even after it let up. We had originally planned an additional side to to a gorge but cancelled that since the hike took us longer than planned.

The town of Tolmin is more of a neighborhood and less touristy. It is very well maintained. We stayed in a cute apartment. The owners live upstairs and greeted is upon arrival. She had juice and beers in there refrigerator for us, along with a variety of snacks.

Dinner was at a restaurant a couple blocks away that had been recommended by our host. Jeff had trout that was was from the river.Read more
