Hiking - Day 6

Today we hiked from Kobarid to Bovec, a 14.5 mile hike. Our accommodations had breakfast in their common room. Today was a longer day so we chose to have our backpacks sent ahead. They were picked up at 8 and we headed out with just our daypacks around 8:30 to.....rain, again. It was not a heavy rain, but it was still rain.

The trail was a mixture of a little of everything. It basically followed the Soca River so for most of the day we heard the river waters flowing, sometimes more violently than others. We got off trail early, but super navigater gps Jeff found a connecting trail to get us back on track. Initially we walked on a narrow stone path along the bank of the river with steep dropoffs on one side. We were rock straddling and stepping carefully. We crossed a swinging bridge over the river and at one point we had to cross tributary waters, swollen by the rain, without a bridge, simply rock hopping or crawling. And once we just had to walk through ankle deep water, committing to getting our feet wetter than they already were. Surrounding the river were views of gorgeous mountains.

A climb up away from the river took us through some forests and pastures. There were mountain goats on the steep rock edges. When we came back down to the river we were mostly on gravel or asphalt roads and then sun came out! The river became a little calmer and there were many kayakers and rafters on the river. We passed more hikers today than we have all week and many bikers.

After 12.5 miles we finally came to a town that had somewhere to get something to drink. We all had a cold Cockta, their version of coke made from herbs. After the needed rest we made our way to the town of Bovec and our ending for the day, 8 hours later. Dinner was at the Thirsty River Brewery where we had very good smash burgers and fries.
