Napier, Hastings & Cape Kidnappers

Nachdem wir vom Great Lake Taupo aus gestartet sind, ging die Reise für uns weiter nach Napier und der 20km davon entfernten Stadt Hastings. Kurz vor Napier verbrachten wir zwei entspannte Nächte auf einem freien Campingplatz am Lake Tutira. Dort haben wir zwei kleinere Wanderungen gemacht, die uns zu den Te Ana Falls (Bild 1), den Tangoio Falls sowie über die am See gelegenden Weideberge (Bild 3) führten. Durch eine riesige Kuhherde zu laufen, mit 3m Sicherheitsabstand zu den Bullen brachte uns ganz schön Muffensausen :D .
Eine weitere Nacht verbrachten wir direkt in Napier auf einem Stellplatz direkt am Meer. Dort waren genau 8 Plätze für Camper vorgesehen und wir waren so glücklich und ergatterten einen davon :) . Zu Fuß erkundeten wir die Stadt und ließen uns leckeren Kuchen und Kaffee im DMP-Café (Bild 4)schmecken.
Auf dem Weg nach Hastings machten wir halt am Cape Kidnappers. Jedes Jahr kommen im Zeitraum von Oktober bis März rund 200.000 Astraltölpel aus Australien zum Brüten an das Kap. Nach circa 11km bei Ebbe am Strand entlanglaufen hatten wir das Kap erreicht und konnten die Vögel von 1m Entfernung aus beobachten (Bild 5 & 6). Sehr schöne und beeindruckende Vögel diese Tölpel!
In Hastings machten wir nur kurz Halt, da die Stadt an sich nicht unbedingt sehenswert ist und auch im Umkreis eher wenig zu erleben ist.

Napier, Hastings & Cape Kidnappers

After starting from Great Lake Taupo, the journey continued to Napier and Hastings about 20km south. Before we headed to Napier we spent two relaxing nights at a free campsite on Lake Tutira. There we made two smaller hikes which led us to the Te Ana Falls (image 1), the Tangoio Falls and the pasturing hills on the lake (image 3). After we climbed the hills we had to go through a huge herd of cows. We made it with 3m safety distance to the bulls which was a little bit exciting. :D
After the campsite we spent the next night directly in Napier on a parking space right on the sea. There were exactly 8 spots for non-selfcontained campers. We were so happy and got one of them. :) We explored the city by foot and enjoyed delicious cakes and coffee in the DMP-Café (picture 4).
On the way to Hastings we stopped at the Cape Kidnappers. Every year, between October and March, about 200,000 gannets come from Australia to the Cape. They brood there eggs and bring up there young stock. After about 11km at low tide on the beach we had reached the Cape and were able to watch the birds from a short distance (picture 5 & 6). They are very beautiful and impressive!
