• Fort McHenry

    March 11, 2023 in the United States ⋅ 🌬 4 °C

Starting the day visiting Fort McHenry it was here in 1814 that the British attempted to take Baltimore from the Americans in the 1812-1815 war (though not heavily stated in the museum, the war started because the Americans declared war on the British in 1812, the war ended with both sides reverting to the status quo before the war).

What makes this fort so famous is that the morning after the battle Francis Scott Key watching on from a neutral British diplomatic ship wrote lines that went on to become the national anthem of the US- star spangled banner. 🎶

After the batter the fort was used for other purposes, such as the civil war, a hospital during WW1 and WW2 and at various points a military prison. Now it is a park and visitors centre.
