  • Fort McHenry

    11 marzo 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ 🌬 4 °C

Starting the day visiting Fort McHenry it was here in 1814 that the British attempted to take Baltimore from the Americans in the 1812-1815 war (though not heavily stated in the museum, the war started because the Americans declared war on the British in 1812, the war ended with both sides reverting to the status quo before the war).

What makes this fort so famous is that the morning after the battle Francis Scott Key watching on from a neutral British diplomatic ship wrote lines that went on to become the national anthem of the US- star spangled banner. 🎶

After the batter the fort was used for other purposes, such as the civil war, a hospital during WW1 and WW2 and at various points a military prison. Now it is a park and visitors centre.

  • Inner Harbour Baltimore

    11 marzo 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

After visiting the fort I got the bus back to the city centre to visit Federal Hill park (which offered great views out over the harbour). Then on to the inner harbour, which was fantastic, with beautiful views, old boats moored up and great shops and restaurants. I pit stopped for a coffee before carrying on (I asked for an espresso and got (the equivalent) of a pint of coffee 😂.Leggi altro

  • Boats, harbours, art and a column

    11 marzo 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Finishing up my short time in Baltimore I visited the old boats dotted around the port, the most interesting was the US submarine Torsk, on August 15th 1945 it sank two Japanese boats, this was the last US enemy ships sank during the war.

After that I visited the Walter Art museum for a brief look art of the America’s and in particular Native Americans.

Finally, I finished up the day at the Washington monument (not the one in DC), this one is 54 metre landmark dedicated to President George Washington. It was 227 steps to the top, but using the step machine in the gym finally paid off as it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. At the top you are rewarded with views across Baltimore!

  • Market Street

    12 marzo 2023, Stati Uniti

To start the day I decide to work the 6.6KM to the Eastern State Prison, walking down market street along Benjamin Franklin Parkway (to the Rocky Steps) and then turning back towards the prison.

    On the walk I saw:
    • Independence Hall (I’ll visit later today).
    • Reading Terminal, beautiful old train station terminus used up to 1984, which is now a corner shop and Hard Rock Cafe.
    • City Hall
    • Masonic Temple (I think it’s their HQ but don’t quote me).
    • Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul
    • Museum Quarter
    • and I finished up just outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art… better known as the steps from the film Rocky (see other post for pictures of this).

  • Eastern State Penitentiary

    12 marzo 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

Eastern State Penitentiary opened in 1829, it aimed to reform criminals through isolation and once built, it was the most expensive construction in the United States at the time. This was down to the fact that every cell was built for one inmate, with their own person outdoor exercise area. The prison soon became full and the one person one cell rule was soon gone, in favour of mass incarceration. Eastern State finally closed its doors as a prison in 1971.

During its 142 years in use, it has had many inmates including none other than Al Capone who, after visiting a cinema in Philadelphia, was arrested for having a concealed firearm, he was sentenced to one year in prison.

Also Pep the dog, who was imprisoned by the Governor for killing his cat… or so the story goes, no one is quite sure why the dog ended its days at the prison. Though people believe it was due to the prison needing some positive light after a lot of bad press.

Another interesting prison tale is the 1945 Prison Escape, when Clarence Klinedinst starting digging a tunnel, he dug 4.5 metres down and 30 metres under the prison and popped out just outside the prison. Him and 11 other inmates then escaped but it didn’t last long, they were round up within a few hours. The final inmate came back a day later, knocking on the doors of the prison because he was hungry!

The prisons isolation experiment soon fell out of favour due to money, it was far too expensive and the so called “New York” method of mass incarceration became the standard in the United States.

  • Independence Hall

    12 marzo 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Final stop today is Independence Hall. Built in 1732 it is said to be the birth place of the United States as it is the site that both the United States Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were debated and adopted by America's Founding Fathers.

The first room we entered was the where the original Pennsylvania Supreme Court met during the colonial and early national periods, but the room hosted other courts and even a museum later in its history.

The second room was where the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution were both signed.

Though most of the artefacts were not present at the time of the signing, the seal in the Supreme Court is original, and the chair in the centre of the legislature room is also original. This fair was used by the first president of the United States George Washington for nearly three months of the Constitutional Convention's.

Most importantly though it’s the set of National Treasure!!!!

  • Liberty Bell 🔔

    13 marzo 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

Was and out early this morning to beat the queues for the Liberty Bell- can confirm it was very quiet and there was no need to get there early, BUT it did mean I got the bell to myself (as wrong as that sounds).

The Bell was originally placed at the top of independence hall and rang out over the city. The bell was ordered from the Whitechapel Foundry in London, in 1751. But in first ring that bell cracked, so local metalworkers John Pass and John Stow melted down that bell and cast a new one in Philadelphia. Hence the names Pass and Stow on the bell.

The large crack that emerged across the bell was due to heavy use over a period of 90 years, and is the result of a repair job gone wrong. It means that nobody living today has ever heard the bell ring.

The bell was not originally called the Liberty Bell, it went on to become so via popular culture and the original media companies.

  • The first Congress & Senate

    13 marzo 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

After visiting the Liberty Bell, I went across the road to Independence Hall, again, to visit the original US Congress and Senate buildings. This was the spot where the first president George Washington oversaw proceedings and the transfer of power from him to John Adams occurred.

Also interesting was the fact that the US replaced the British monarchy with a republic, but then adorned their new government building with picture of two European monarchs, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. This was due to the fact that the French government had supported the US during the war of independence. However, the relationship deteriorated when the US decided not to support France in the war against the United Kingdom.

  • Old Town Walk

    13 marzo 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

Before lunch I did a short 5KM loop round the old part of Philadelphia (I should stress is not that old by European standards). I visited:

    • The tombs of the unknown soldier in Washington Square
    • First Bank of the US, opened 1791 and is the oldest federal building in the US.
    • Carpenters Hall, where the first continental congress was held in 1774 to resolve grievances with the United Kingdom, it was these grievances that led to the American revolution.
    • Spruce Street Harbour Park
    • Benjamin Franklin Bridge
    • Elfreth’s Alley Museum

  • Liberty Landing

    14 marzo 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ❄️ 2 °C

Early starting to the day to come over to Liberty Landing to catch the ferry to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.

The ferry port was the main arrival point for immigrants after being processed at Ellis Island. The 20 track platform offered service far and wide.

The landing also included a memorial to the twin towers, the memorial lines directly up to where the twin towers could have been seen!

  • Ellis Island, Museum of Immigration

    14 marzo 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ 🌬 2 °C

The ferry took us over from New Jersey city to Ellis Island. It was here that the US processed the majority of arrivals to the country from 1892 to 1924, it saw 12 million people pass through the emigration hall (third and fourth picture).

For many the stay on the island was 3-7 hours, but for others it could be days, weeks and sometimes months. This was due to extra questioning, delays or heath screening. During the time it was open only 2% of arrivals were declined entry to the United States, for these people they were sent on the next boat back to the port of origin. The museum was absolutely fantastic, particularly from a social history point of view!

  • Statue of Liberty (Liberty Island)

    14 marzo 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ❄️ 1 °C

Finally made it to the Statue of Liberty, I hadn’t planned to visit Liberty Island, but the ferry to Ellis Island, included a free return trip to the statue. So I decided to head over and see the girl in person.

The Statue of Liberty was dedicated in 1886 and was named "The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World,” it was a gift from the people of France to the United States standing for democracy, liberty and freedom.

The statue was far smaller than I thought it would be, with the majority of the height coming from the base. But she was beautiful, particularly when the sun briefly showed an appearance. The island contained a museum, cafe and shop. But my god it was cold!! And it had started to snow but the time I got there.

After visiting the statue I headed back to New York for my exploring!

  • Times Square & Bad Cinderella

    14 marzo 2023, Stati Uniti

Finishing up the day at ‘Times Square’ and the see of lights. I visited here once over 5 years ago, but that was during the day, so this was the first time seeing it at night.

After that I went round the corner to the Imperial Theatre to see Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Bad Cinderella. It didn’t last long on the West End, but I really, really enjoyed it! It had some great music, dancing, a pantomime like story (which was Cinderella but updated).

Getting in the theatre was a joke though, their ticket scanners weren’t working, so we had to exchange our digital tickets for paper ones… for EVERYONE. This meant the show started well over 40 minutes late. But it was worth the wait, just made the seat even more uncomfortable.

  • Brooklyn & Manhattan Bridge

    15 marzo 2023, Stati Uniti

After having another walk around the World Trade Centre site I walked to the Brooklyn and then walked over it. The views from the top of the bridge were absolutely fantastic, probably the best so far on my trip.

After that I came off the bridge and went left down into Dumbo, this was something I found online and was an instagramers paradise.

Also, a note on the weather it is absolutely beautiful today, the snow and rain has gone, but the wind has stayed. But in the sun it is really nice!

  • Roosevelt Island 🚠

    15 marzo 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

Lunchtime on Roosevelt Island! Thanks to a tip off from my Mum’s friend I jumped on the metro to Roosevelt Island and from there took the cable car back to 2nd Avenue!

The cable car was totally surreal being in the middle of the hustle and bustle of New York, and travelling in between the skyscrapers, was a fantastic experience. Though getting on it was a nightmare, they didn’t take cards, and you needed a NYC metro card- which I didn’t have. Sadly I couldn’t buy one as the machine kept refusing foreign cards. Anyway 10 minutes, and a free metro card later I was allowed on the cable car for free 😂Leggi altro

  • Movie tour 🍿 🎥

    15 marzo 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☀️ 7 °C

To finish off the day, I went on a 10KM walk through central NYC, visiting all the main sights that I’d seen in films and tv programmes! The tour culminated in seeing Universal Studios filming a remake of Bernard and the Genie behind the Natural History museum. I was able to see British actor Paapa Essiedu. I’ve put below the spots I saw and some of the films that they were in… many have been in more than one though!

    • Ghostbusters HQ (cheating a little on this one, as I saw it first thing).
    • Queensboro Bridge (from the film Manhattan).
    • Grand Central Station (countless films from here).
    • New York Public Library (films include Ghostbusters, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Spider-Man, Sex and the City: The Movie and many more).
    • The Chrysler Building (seen in pretty much every New York skyline shot)
    • Tiffany Co (Breakfast at Tiffany’s)
    • Rockefeller Centre (seen in EVERY single Christmas film ever, including Jingle all the Way! )
    • Radio City Music Hall (Annie, Godfather, and many more)
    • Trump Tower (this is where Trump launched his candidacy for President)
    • Russian Tea Room (Tootsie: this is where George Fields, Michael Dorsey's agent, meets Dorothy Michaels for the first time).
    • Park Plaza (Home Alone 2)
    • Central Park (countless films)
    • National History Museum (Night at the Museum)
    • Final pictures are of Universal filming Bernard and the Genie behind the Natural History museum.

I will come back to this to add in side by side photos of my pictures with the film version.
