El Camino de Santiago

St. Jean Pied de Port France to Fisterre spain. Planning for 830 kilometers. On foot. Lue lisää
  • Matkan aloitus
    27. huhtikuuta 2023

Our journey begins on April 27.

    15. huhtikuuta 2023, Meksiko ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

On the 27th, we fly to LA to catch our flight to spain. After meeting Kathy and Javier in Madrid we four make our way to southern France where our walk begins on May 1.

There are many pilgrimages ending in Santiago de Compostella, the cathedral containing the bones of St. James, Spain's patron saint. The route we will take, known as the Camino Frances, begins on the french side of the pyrenees mountains and continues south and westward some 750 kilometers to Santiago Spain. We will be continuing on to Finisterre on the coast, for a total of 820km and around 6 weeks of walking.

This is the most popular camino in Spain likely due to the movie "The Way" and while a religious pilgrimage since the 1100's, today everyone travels their "way" for uniquely personal reasons.

We will post here as often as we can. By clicking on the blue "el camino de santiago" trip name by our picture above, a map will come up with our live location.

Feel free to follow us here at findpenguins.com on the web, or the Findpenguins app.

Thanks for coming along with us!

  • Cloudy Friday in LA

    28. huhtikuuta 2023, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

Having breakfast at the hotel, its going to be a long travel day today. Yesterday, making our way up from PV was about as relaxed as possible. Everything went smoothly and uneventfully. We usually travel pretty lightly, trying to pack a single carry-on each unless we plan to mule stuff back. Yesterday we checked my backpack due to its length and threw the trekking poles in as well. Waiting for luggage and having to re-check at customs in PHX was the only foot tapping-watch checking time for me. Melanie wore her pack as carry-on and I travelled in high style with all of my clothes the neck tattoo of luggage; a shopping bag.

  • Madrid comes alive at night.

    30. huhtikuuta 2023, Espanja ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

Its 4:30, Im laying awake since 2:30 am. I got a good solid 4 hours sleep and since changing so many time zones my body seems to be adjusting well. Our Airbnb is right in the middle of Madrid nightlife and im laying here listening to the sounds of the night. Its loud.; very loud. Whats its not, is angry or violent. I hear no drunken arguments, no one is screaming, no sirens, no bottles breaking. I hear lots of singing (including some opera voices walking along), soccer chants, lots of laughing... It just seems alive in a good way. It kinda feels good to have been woken by it.

Today after a cafe stop, we travel by train to Pamplona and catch a cab north to France. If all goes well, we start walking tomorrow.

  • Madrid to St Jean Pied de Port

    30. huhtikuuta 2023, Ranska ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

Our dream of walking the Caminó Frances has come to fruition.
Javier and I went to a Camino informational meeting at REI many years ago, this is definitely a bucket list item we get to check off.
When we moved into our Condo in PV in 2020 during the pandemic we met Jim and Melanie and as our friendship grew we discovered that they also had a desire to walk the entire Camino as well. We have all been researching, buying gear, training and rigorously been planning for well over a year.
Now that we have finally arrived we’re like kids the day before Christmas.
We officially start our Camino tomorrow, we’ve got our credentials from the pilgrim office, our sea shells are hanging on our packs and our gear is as ready as we are.
We’ve already met fellow pilgrims from Sacramento, Barcelona and Brazil and we look forward to this journey with anticipation.
We are all walking for different reasons but have a common path. I look forward to sharing this adventure with Jim and Melanie and I know our Camino family will grow with each passing day. Hopefully these footprints will give everyone a glimpse of our journey and also serve to document our memories for us. Buenas noches… Kathy

A day of synchronicity and serendipity. Everything that could go wrong...didnt. Everything that could go right, went better. The train ride from Madrid to Pamplona was smooth and on time. The one thing that had been weighing on my mind--my forgetting to pre-arrange our cab to France--worked out smoother than hoped.
After getting off of the train in Pamploa I immediately ran outside to see if I could find a taxi van that someone else had prebooked. Since its Sunday, I wasnt hopeful.

The vans hold 6 passengers and frequently pilgrims will book them ahead for themselves and hope that passengers getting off of the train that are heading for the camino and looking for transportation will jump in and split the cost.
This is what our plan was. This was what I forgot to do.

Outside I found our brand new friends-for-life Jose and Maria with Juan their van driver. They happily added us 4 to their van and we made our way north merrily singing camp songs...well, not really singing, but all of the languages being spoken at once certainly filled the air with joyful noise, and Juan kept us entertained the whole way with his wealth of area knowledge and Camino lore.

It was a day of camino magic.

    The camino provides.

After a great lunch in St Jean we made our way to the pilgrim office, got our credentiales, our first stamps and our shells.

  • We climbed the Pyrenees today to Orrison

    1. toukokuuta 2023, Ranska ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

We had a short stroll today just about 5 miles today with a total ascent of 2,273 feet. We had fantastic weather with just a few minutes of drizzle and mist. The pictures don’t do any justice.
I thoroughly enjoyed the climb, we are so fortunate and blessed to be here.
We have met pilgrims from Australia, Korea and Germany today and are staying in an Albergue a first for all of us.

  • Orisson FR.

    1. toukokuuta 2023, Ranska ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

What was once a tiny fishing village protected from the unpredictable ocean by Banderas Bay, Puerto Vallarta sits nestled between the water and the mountains. In some areas of our city the hills come right to the waters edge, in others, such as our neighborhood, or "colonia", we have a buffer of about 4 blocks. Our home sits high on the hills of the Cinco de Diciembre colonia and this has given us an excellent training ground. The four of us have been training in these hills for over a year in preparation for our camino. Hundreds of hilly miles (my last pair of shoes had 600 "Strava" miles on them before I retired them last month...from one year of use).

Through illness and injury, heat and humidity we've persevered. In spite of this, we have always planned to make our first day in the Pyrenees a short one. Instead of our expected daily average of 14 miles, our first night we chose to stay in Orisson, a 4 mile hike gaining 2200 feet in elevation.
This was planned to give our travel sore bodies a chance to rest, adapt and recuperate.

Our training prepared us well physically and mentally, but I was surprised by the relentlessness of the climb. It was one continous hill the entire way--for our PV friends, think 4 miles of Calle Nicaragua!--I did fine for the first 3 miles, but had to rest many times on the final push to our Albergue (hostel).

Melanie, Jav and Kat and a warm bowl of vegetable soup was waiting.

All in all, on what is supposed to be the toughest physical part of the camino we are doing very well and are just so happy and grateful to be here.
    Oh, and the views!

We had our first communal pilgrims meal at the albergue. It was an experience I'll never forget and it gave me the reasons I am doing this.

  • Orrison our first shared pilgrim meal

    1. toukokuuta 2023, Espanja ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

Last night we had a magical meal with strangers from all over the world and this time will be engraved into my heart forever. We shared our meal and as dessert was served I shared that one of our roommates was celebrating her birthday and that I had heard another gentleman was as well.
Lisa from the Gold Coast of Australia had specifically planned on being in Orrison to celebrate and we soon found out it was Flavio’s birthday from Brazil, so I asked everyone to sing Happy Birthday in whatever language they wanted and so we sang, what happened next was beautiful, different people stood up and sang in their native language. The first video is in Taiwanese the second in Korean. We heard at least have a dozen different rendition’s.
Later in the evening each Pilgrim shared their name, where they were from and why they were walking? There were so many heartfelt reasons and so many bonds and connections made. I’ll say it again we are so fortunate and blessed to be experiencing the Caminó Frances.

Today’s climbing of the Pyrenees was not as tough as yesterday. The scenery was breathtaking and I feel so blessed to be able to do this. On the side of the road of our uphill journey was a small monument with a small Mexican flag 🇲🇽 waving in the wind and it reminded me of our beautiful hometown of Puerto Vallarta. I believe all the heavy climbing is over and I’m very grateful for that😎Lue lisää
