    An der ukrainischen Grenze wurden wir das erste Mal richtig kontrolliert. Es dauerte ca. eine halbe Stunde bis wir die drei verschiedenen Schalter durchlaufen hatten und die Hälfte unser Taschen gefilzt waren.

    Roni wirkte wie eine verschlafene Kleinstadt. Wir fanden ein Cafe, wo eine Männergruppe nach ihrem sonntäglichen Fußballspiel Bier trank. Wir konnten bei ihnen Geld tauschen (was wir am Ende aber zurück bekamen), um etwas zu kaufen und verstanden uns auf Anhieb. (Einer konnte zum Glück Englisch ;)). Es war schon ein wenig unangenehm die Freundlichkeit abzulehnen. Es gelang uns nicht Bier, Pepsi, eine Schokolade und ein Rücklicht (vom Polizeichef Vladimir) auszuschlagen.

    Ein Grenzübergang (den einer einer der Fußballspieler mit plant/baut) von der Ukraine nach Rumänien wird es zum Frühjahr nächsten Jahres fertiggestellt, so dass wir wie geplant zurück nach Rumänien fahren.    Leggi altro

    Heute ging es mit der Fähre wieder auf die andere Seite der Donau. Vorbei an einer kilometerlangen Schlange von wartenden Autos.
    Tulcea ist eine touristische Stadt mit leicht gehobenen Hotelpreisen. Von hier aus starten viele Ausflugstouren ins Donaudelta. An der Unterkunft trafen wir auf Claudine und ihren Begleiter und tranken erstmal ein Bier zusammen. Wir hatten schon vor 3 Tagen für eine Nacht die selbe Unterkunft.Leggi altro

    Heute ging es um 13 Uhr von Tulcea mit der Fähre nach Sulina.
    Dort angekommen wurde erstmal an den Strand geradelt, um das Schwarze Meer zu sehen und darin zu schwimmen! Anschließend gab es noch Nudeln mit Erbsen aus dem Campingkocher.
    Unser "Hostel" ist auf der anderen Seite des Flusses und nur per Boot erreichbar. Die Ausstattung ist etwas abenteuerlich.    Leggi altro

    Film festival

    Today, we met Jürgen. He is traveling with his airplaine! We liked the idea very much and had our second breakfist together with him sharing our stories. He called the airplaine his "flying bike" :)

    We shortly visited the lighthouse and in the heat of the day we cycled 35km on small pathes next to one of the river streams. Normal people use the boat...That is why our bikes suffered from a lot of stones, we suffered from sandy parts and we had to walk trough water. Jos water holder broke off and made a hole in the plastic bottle. First thing to repair. However, we saw many animals when we had some minutes without being eaten by mosqitos.

    In Sfântu Georghe, we stay on a great camping village with large chillout areas and beach volleyball fields. Right after arrival Wi found a pin in her back wheel! Shit, this is the first flat tire of the trip. At least it did not happen in the nowhere but only next to the tent. The 15th international film festival takes place right here these days and we stay at least two nights.    Leggi altro

    Wi hat ihren platten Reifen geflickt und Jo sein rechtes Pedal auseinander genommen, dabei sind die Kugeln wild durcheinander gehüpft. Das Zusammenbauen hat dann mit Weglassen einer Kugel funktioniert.

    Mittags ging es an den Strand und in das vom Wind aufgewühlte Meer.

    Abends ging es mit Ruci, einer Rumänien die in London lebt, in ein lokales Fischrestaurant. Mit neuen Tips für Rumänien ging es Anschließend ins Open Air Kino des Film Festivals. "Under the Tree" (ein isländischer Nachbarschaftstreit Film) ist auf jeden Fall zu empfehlen.    Leggi altro

    Zu dritt unterwegs

    Um 5.30 Uhr wurde in der Morgenröte aufgestanden, das Zelt abgebaut, um den Katamaran um 7 Uhr zu erwischen.
    Auf der Fähre trafen wir Mark aus Hamburg, der auch mit einem Cyclocross unterwegs ist. Wir beschlossen zusammen zu fahren und kamen schon um 15 Uhr nach 92km im Ort an und füllten unseren Energiespeicher in einem Restaurant mit Wels auf. Anschließend ging es zu unserem Campingplatz, wo neben uns noch Laura aus den Niederlanden ein Gast war. Sie ist mit ihrem Hund (und seit neustem noch einem adoptiertem Straßenhund) unterwegs. Wir hatten ein interessanten Abend zu viert mit zahlreichen Moskitos, vor denen wir in Lauras Caravan Schutz suchten.Leggi altro

    After breakfast at the camping ground with Mark and Laura, the three of us continued to Constantas holiday resort Marmaia. In Marmaia, the beaches are so much crowded with people that it is stunning. So many people on such a little bit of sand. The panorama is full of naked flesh, hotel bunkers and chemical industry park. The air smells of gasoline. However, it is nice to have a swim. But for sure, we'll continue south tomorrow.Leggi altro

    Morgens ging es nach Constanta. Direkt an der Promenade beim bekannten alten Casino aus Kaisers Zeiten, welches aktuell leer steht, wurde eine Militärshow(/Übung) abgehalten. Der Einsatz von Fregatten, Kampfjets, Helikoptern und weiteren Booten wurde für die Passanten an der Promenade mit Marschmusik untermalt. Laut einer Passantin gibt es regelmäßig die gleiche Show.
    Varma Veche ist der Strand, wo sich die Jugend von Rumänien trifft. Hier wird am Strand wild gecampt und abends direkt am Strand zur Musik von den Beachbars getanzt.    Leggi altro

    Perfect views

    Today was a lot so see. In the morning it takes forever to get ready. Marc left in the early morning to catch his flight in Varna, so we're two again. We talk a lot with Astrid. She is 62 years and travelling since 10 years and just started to do it by bike. She quitted her job with 52 and lives from her earnings until retirement. She only owns three boxes at friends and her travelling gear and always sleeps in a tent. Wow. very minimalistic.
    When we want to start, Wis tire is flat. Again. So we exchanged the tire. It is already super hot.
    Then we cycle trough mid day heat and cross the boarder to Bukharin in 5 minutes. We passed very impressive rocks of the Northern Bulgarian steep coastline and climbed a bit. Then, we pedal to the Kaliakra fortress and enjoy the wonderful views from the fortress ruins seeing the coast.
    In the evening, we went to a famous mussel farm Dalboka. I can only recommend! Hint: Theres a copy directly next to it with the same name. But the original one has a website ending with .bg. The copy ends with .eu.bg.

    Tag der Pausen

    Um 10 Uhr ging es los in die 5km entfernte Stadt zum Frühstücken/Brunchen. Nach weiteren 10km wurde eine Bade-Pause eingelegt. Anschließend wurde im nächsten Ort im Cafe an der Promenade angehalten.
    In dem Ort war die Promenade verhältnismäßig schön, doch außerhalb des Ortes leider nicht mehr funktional. Die Beton Straße hat sich in große Stücke zerteilt und rakte in alle Himmelsrichtungen.
    Der nächste Ort war Albena. Klassischer pauschal Tourismus in Hotelbunkern umrandet von Freizeitmöglichkeiten. Nach einer kurzen Pause ging es weiter nach Varna, der dritt größten Stadt Bulgariens, in ein Self Check In Hostel ganz ohne Personal und einer Zimmergröße von 3qm. Interessantes Konzept. Varna überzeugt mit einem schönen Park oberhalb der Strandpromenade an der sich Restaurants die Hand reichen.    Leggi altro

    We had the choice: Take the road that is partly highway OR take small paths in undefined condition.

    We started the first half of the day on the highway with lots of traffic. We made some way but it definitely sucks to cycle there.
    After a relaxing lunch break at the beach in the shade and a swim, we changed our strategy and moved on to the small roads...

    ... which lead us into deep forest. The path was very steep and going up and down. Stones and sand change with potholes and bumpers. The first flies arrived and we did not realize early enough to better have returned ... until ...

    ... we were fully occupied by thousands and thousands of small black flies. The were everywhere. Trying to fly into nose and eyes. Trying all parts of our body. The summing noise in our ears was like a swarm of mosquitoes. We tried to breathe trough clothes. We tried to cycle away. We tried to wave and shake. But they just came and stayed. It was horrible. It was hard to not panic. Our pulse was too high. It was too hot. And far too many flies!!!!

    The only hope was to endure this nightmare and to reach the next city. It took around 30 minutes. But we made it.

    Loss of today:

    We started early today and finished the part up hill before the heat. Only some flies today and we were prepared much better. So, luckily it was no problem. Our host told us later the flies are coming out in the heat only in August. After lunch, the way was going down until the vibrant city Burgas.
    At the beginning, we saw many people with dark mud all over their bodies and having a bath in extremely salty water next to the sea. They told us it's healthy.

    Then, we watched the local kite surfers and miraculously did not go surfing ourselves, even though we could have. (Maybe because of the 70km, the heat, not tooo strong winds...but I'm still not sure why). Instead we went to the beach.
    Burgas seems to be a very lively city worth to live in so far!    Leggi altro

    Aus der Stadt raus gab es den ersten längeren Fahrradweg, an der Küste, der auf einer alten Straße mündete.
    Auf der ersten Brücke schmiss Wi, nach einem kurzen Fotopause, ihren Helm samt Kopfhörern in den Fluss und durfte hinterher schwimmen, um ihn zu retten.
    Für mittags hatten wir von unserem Host ein Geheimtipp. Nach einer Abkühlung im Wasser, ging es in ein schattiges Plätzchen mit schöner Aussicht. Dort bereitete eine alte Dame in einem schönen Bretterverschlag fangfrischen Fisch zu.
    Anschließend ging es zur nächsten Bucht nach Sozopol, der ältestesten Stadt Bulgariens mit engen Gassen. Zum Sonnenuntergang kamen wir auf einem kleinem Campingplatz 10m vom Strand an. Hier bleiben wir zwei Nächte, da morgen Freunde aus Wien ankommen.    Leggi altro

    Bye Bulgaria! See you hopefully soon. After a long and hard ride up the hills (all day 107km and 1.950m height!!!!!) trough the dense Bulgarian forest with again - a lot of flies - we arrived in Malko Tarnovo.

    It's a sleepy, lovely town with decreasing population next to the Turkish boarder. We eat the last Shopska salad while talking to a nice Finnish guy. He was a happy to have a small break from his Bulgarian wife's family ;) The boarder control takes only 5 minutes and we are in Turkey!

    First impressions:

    - No flies, no forest
    - Awesome streets, broad, straight, no holes
    - Car drivers greet a lot
    - New max speed Wi: 78km/h
    - A shepherd gives us fresh berries from Rhus Coriaria bush
    - We have a coffee and a cake for less than one Euro
    - Hear the first calls for prayer by the nearby mosque
    - unpronounceable language: teşekür ederim = thank you

    Nach dem ersten türkischen Frühstück (zur Abwechslung mal im Hotel) ging es in das nur 50km entfernte Lüleburgaz. Dort ist seit Langem mal wieder ein Warmshower! Inanc hat uns abgeholt und zu unserem Schlafplatz gebracht.
    Die Bike Academy. Es ist die erste in der Türkei. Dort gibt es 8 Schlafplätze für Radreisende und ein Cafe. Fahrräder können hier eine halbe Stunde kostenlos ausgeliehen werden, um das Fahrrad fahren zu lernen oder zu trainieren.

    Ansonsten haben wir den Abend mit Inanc verbracht. Es gab den ersten Döner in der Türkei. Wir haben eine Moschee besucht und die Stadt gezeigt bekommen.    Leggi altro

    Reunion in Istanbul

    David und Paddy, aus der Heimat, sind auch gerade in Istanbul :). So haben wir den Tag gemeinsam mit Sightseeing verbracht. Eine beeindruckende Stadt!
    Abends ging es dann noch in das Sceneviertel (Besiktas), wo wir ein cooles Biker-Dachterrassen-Restaurant gefunden haben. Anschließend sind wir ein zweites Mal in die Jokar19 Bar gegangen, weil die Cocktails einfach so gut waren.Leggi altro

    Hospitality

    Hospitality of the people we meet is overwhelming. Our senses get flooded with impressions in this vibrant city. Even though it was Bayram, the center is packed with crowds. (Bayram = official holiday and many shops closed and people are in Mekka or with their families.)

    'You can stay as long as you want' our warmshower host Ahmet tells us and even gives us all his keys for his flat! :D Thank you, we are absolutely astonished :):) And we hope to host back another day!

    After a typical turkish breakfast with Ahmet (Simit, Tea, Tomatoes, etc.) Jo's hair and beard gets cut while Wi get served Turkish coffee and cold water. Service level is on the very top end in Turkey in our perception. We would like to bring a bit of it home. ;)

    We stroll endlessly with Paddy and David on the Grand Bazaar, read Arabic books and then continue on the Spice Bazaar today. It is so colorful, lively and tasty! A pity we can not take much on the bikes but it was successful shopping.

    Then, we are invited to the brother of Wis friend who lives in the east of Istanbul. We have an impressive dinner and get to know his family. We feel already offered soo much but of course they insist to even bring us to the metro station and we cannot pay for the 'taksi'.

    After that, we are happy to meet our host again. He takes us to local street food places and shows us the Taksim square and Galata tower. Again, crowds of people, more arabic influence, impressive views.

    Ahmets Stadtführung

    Nach einem Brunch mit Ahmet (hat sich mit Ahmet der Terrorist vorgestellt, in Anlehnung an das deutsche Puppenspiel), ging es zum versunkenen Palast.
    Unnützes Wissen: der versunkene Palast wurde 500 n. Chr. gebaut und diente als Trinkwasserspeicher 100.000 Tonnen). Nach der Eroberung von Istanbul durch die Osmanen im Jahr 1453 geriet die Zisterne langsam in Vergessenheit. Die Osmanen bauten ihr eigenes Bewässerungsystem. Ein fließendes. 100 Jahre später kam ein holländischer Reisender nach Istanbul, um die byzantinischen Ruinen zu erforschen. Durch die Erwähnung der Zisterne in seinem Reisebericht, erlangte diese fortan an Bedeutung. Seitem wurde sie mehrfach saniert und ist seit 1987 für die öffentliche Besichtigung zugänglich.
    Danach hat uns Ahmed über 8 Stunden durch die Stadt geführt, er hatte uns vorgewarnt. Durch seine fröhliche Art und sein enormes Wissen, hatten wir einen sehr schönen Tag.    Leggi altro

    We are still tired today and leave Istanbul very late. Even though we take the tram to the last station, we cycle a one hour along the Bosphorus to finally leave the central part of this gigantic city. We pass some nice villas. Ahmet recommended us to take the boat to the other side, so we enjoy to travel to the Asian continent on the water.

    Directly on the other side, it leads up the hill so steeply (20%?), it is impossible to ride. So a lot of walking and sweating changes with great panoramic views and small villages with a lot of fruits and vegetables. The black fig trees just get ripe and pomegranade trees grow here as well. Both are fresh absolutely delicious.

    By chance we end up at Marias place in Polonezköy. The village is a polish enclave in Turkey. Maria is 74, runs a pension and speaks perfectly German. The village is based on polish ancestors, is mainly catholic and they eat pork. We learn about the history and how her relatives have build the village from nothing after fleeing the war. Once, her sister even danced with Atatürk. We even get a tour by the mayor (relative of Maria) in his private museum. Very interesting :)

    Auf dem Weg zum Mittagsstop in Sile begegneten uns auf der sonst so leeren Straße sehr viele freundliche LKWs. In Sile wurde das erste Mal auf türkischer Seite im Schwarzen Meer angebadet. Östlich von Sile ist die Autobahn noch nicht fertig. Hier wird fleißig gebaut. So durften wir die zahlreichen Brücken und Tunnels bergauf und bergab im Slalom umfahren.
    Abends auf dem Campingplatz trafen wir ein Ehepaar, Didel und Hartmut mit ihrem Geländecaravan, aus Ratzeburg. Es war schön mal unerwartet jemanden mit Moin Moin begrüßen zu können. Wir wurden prompt bekocht! Es gab so viel zu erzählen, dass der Abend wie im Flug verging.    Leggi altro

    After the many ups and downs the day before, Wis legs are so empty, they burn like hell just after the start. Far too much anaerob energy was needed the day before on the steep roads.

    Along the way we see the first hazelnut fields and people who dry and clean the hazelnut harvest. We ask to take a picture and they give us a bag of hazelnuts :D Faar too many to eat! Black sea coast is called: 'Hazelnut-coast' in the east part as there are a lot of plantages.

    We have a lunch break with a bit of swimming in one of the nice beaches. Then we find beautiful rocks and climb around. Suddenly there is a full herd of cows on the street (cows in general are no surprise on the street to us any more) but there is a friendly sheppard guarding them. We give him the hazelnuts and are happy to give at least a little bit.

    We find a very friendly pension. The owner speaks perfectly German.    Leggi altro

    ... was sich verdoppelt, wenn man es teilt.
    Wir wurden gleich morgens in einem kleinen Dorf zum Tee eingeladen. Lustig: Wenn jemand kein Englisch oder Deutsch kann, wird in Null-Komma-Nix jemand organisiert, der eine der Sprachen spricht. So auch in dem Dorf.
    Ansonsten gab es heute ausnahmsweise mal ein längere flache Strecke.
    Nach dem Abendessen, bekamen wir auf dem Campingplatz eine Tüte mit Tomaten und eine riesige Wassermelone geschenkt, die wir unmöglich auf dem Fahrrad transportieren können. Also verschenkten wir die Hälfte weiter, welche auch gleich freudig gegessen wurde. Der Plan sich schnell ins Zelt zurück zu ziehen, um kein Gegen-Geschenk zu bekommen, ging nicht auf. 15min später rief ein Mädchen: "Hello, hello" direkt vor unserem Zelt. Sie hatte zwei über dem Lagerfeuer gegrillte Maiskolben in der Hand.    Leggi altro
