    Kuantan, Malaysia

    26 de mayo de 2018, Malasia ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Kuantan is a pretty quiet city on the east coast of Malaysia. A former colleague and friend of mine has been living there for 1 ½ years now so I decided to visit her and her family. They live very close to a few very nice beaches which are enjoyed by locals, tourists and monkeys alike. The area is extremely lush and green – much greener than my current home town BSD.Leer más

  • Break Fasting

    28 de mayo de 2018, Malasia ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Visiting Kuantan during Ramadan season is quit a fascinating experience. Many of the city’s inhabitants meet for a communal pick nick before sunset so they can celebrate break fasting together. People first buy what every food they like at the local market and then sit down on their blankets in front of the biggest and most important mosque of the city. Once the muezzin gives the signal, people start eating. Roughly 30 minutes after, people quickly pack up their belongings to go inside the mosque and pray. We enjoyed most of our food just as much as they did.Leer más

  • Exploring Kuantan's cultural diversity

    29 de mayo de 2018, Malasia ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Kuantan is a very diverse city concerning culture. Members of different ethnic backgrounds praying to different gods live side by side peacefully. There are quite a few colourful Indian temples (Tamil Nadu Style) and the impressive Sultan Ahmad Mosque. You find Chinese Buddhist temples as well as Christian churches. Food is just as varied. You can chose from very many different cuisines. I had a simple but very delicious chicken soup with rice. What I found to be very different from Indonesia, is that people actually talk in the language of their country of origin. Next to Malay which is very close to Indonesian, I heard Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese… I can’t tell the difference) and a variety of Indian languages whereas in Indonesia, everybody just speaks Bahasa Indonesia or English, but most people of Chinese origin can’t actually speak Chinese.Leer más
