  • Camp #14 - Pine Springs, GMNP

    September 28, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Pine Springs Campground in Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

I've gone from cooking up paella on a camp stove, to doing instant noodles on the jet boil.

3 different trucks and 3 different types of roof top tents. I'm pretty sure I've got the best truck and tent 👌Read more

  • Camp #15 - BLM sunset reef

    September 29, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

This is a free camp spot on BLM land close to Carlsbad Cavern. It's close enough so we can get back up to watch the bats.
For free camp site, it's great. Each pitch has a fire pit, bbq, bench, shade and bin. There's also a (pit) toilet.

We took one of the tent spots rather than the RV spots and put up our hiking tent to reserve our spot whilst we went out to watch the bat's. 🤞 That we have bat's there unlike Austin.

  • Camp #16 - Oliver Lee

    September 30, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Camp #16 - near White Sands National Park, New Mexico.
Today we got ourself a mattress topper as both of our backs are hurting a lot! This camp ground had the perfect bench for us to cut up the new topper to fit the mattress in the tent.
I opened a bottle of cider and the spiders web around the ladder caught the cap. Although it didn't work on the second bottle.
We ate dinner and then Laura watched the sunset, said: "that ways West. Fancy going to California?" in a few weeks maybe.

Lots of mosquitos again. And for anybody keeping track of costs it was $10 + $4 reservation fee for this site. But flushing toilets and showers!

  • Camp #17 - Coronado camp (Albuquerque)

    October 1, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

We've pulled in here for a couple of nights to go to the international balloon fiesta.
Tonight we're going to attempt sleeping with the tent half down so we can pack up quicker and easier in the morning (like pre-4am) to get there for the sunrise.
Another couple of night's camping along the river Rio Grande.
Also a good little spot to allow me to undertake some drone repairs. I went to fly the drone in White Sands and it wouldn't fly due to a faulty fan. So I bought some screwdrivers, took it apart and hopefully it'll work when I next want to use it 🤞

  • Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

    October 2, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Growing up in Bristol I've done the Bristol International Balloon fiesta a couple of times, but this is bigger on a different scale!
The sunrise take off at 7am was dayed about an hour because of winds. Thankfully we took a blanket and the chairs from the truck. So we just setup camp and waited to see the skies fill with balloons. Over 650 balloons at the event with an expectation of over 2 million visitors during the week.Read more

  • IHOP

    October 2, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

We agreed that we should get breakfast out after the balloon fiesta, considering we were up at 3:30 for it. Although it's now 11am and we've still not eaten, so is it really breakfast? 😂
Time for some pancakes though!Read more

  • Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort

    October 3, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Whilst chatting to Dave Cornwaithe about Colorado he mentioned his friend Torie owned a place called the buffalo Lodge which is a bicycle motel/resort. We stayed the night here where they do bike rides from, rent out bikes and everything is bike themed. A perfect place for us to stay the night in Colorado Springs, shame we didn't have more time to enjoy the bikes.Read more

  • Garden of the Gods

    October 4, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

We walked around the Garden of the Gods before setting up north to the rockies. We did the "Perkins" route (named after some bloke who gifted the gardens to Colorado Springs and not the name of the route because I zig-zagged us around)Read more

  • Camp #18 - Moraine Park (Rocky Mountains

    October 4, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

First night(s) using the diesel heater. It was needed, along with the electric blanket and the down blanket. It did get cold, but the views are incredible.
You can hear Elk (and maybe some moose) yelling all the time, day and night.
We also had our first camp fire here (and made smoores)

Laura wasn't a fan of her summit breakfast scramble meal. So we won't be buying that one again. Bacon sandwiches tomorrow?

Dinner evening 2 was more ready to eat meals (these were better than breakfast) followed by Smores before using the diesel heater and electric blanket in the tent.

Breakfast morning 2 we had those bacon sandwiches finally!

Dinner for evening 3 James is a going to cook. Although he was rudely interrupted during his cooking by Elk!

  • Hike - Fern lake

    October 5, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

Our first hike in the Rockies. We hiked Fern Lake, the route takes you through where some forest fires were in 2020 (you can see the burned trees) and at the top we were rewarded with an alpine lake view. On our way back we ended up walking past a bunch of resting Elk.Read more

  • Hike - Bear, Emerald & Haiyaha lake

    October 6, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

Hike around various lakes in the Rocky Mountain National Park.
We caught the free bus from our camp ground to the park and ride and then switched to another bus that dropped us off at Bear lake.
A quick walk around Bear Lake, followed by Nymph lake, then a hike up to Dream lake and then Emerald lake.
Coming back down there was a split off back up to Haiyaha lake. Haiyaha was the most beautiful milky blue colour.
I got changed and tried to dip in this glacier lake, but it was just too cold for my feet.

  • Vail

    October 7, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

We stopped off in this little mountain town of Vail. We're here between mountain bike and skiing season, so it was a bit of an odd stop, but we grabbed a drink before heading on
