    Faial

    June 12, 2018 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

What a lovely place Faial is. At first we visit Horta, a small town that is a famous sailor’s stopover situated in the middle of the North Atlantic. The tradition wants that every boat passes through leaves a painting in the harbour somewhere. Now the harbour is literally covered by thousands paintings, testament to the sailors who have navigated the Azores, as the most beautiful museums.

Then we visit two volcanoes. We walk around the Caldeira of the Faial volcano. The ever changing views are always spectacular and make the walk an absolute must. The 7 km long walls are covered by various plants, including beech tress, junipers, moss, cedars, ferns and hydrangeas. And then we climb the Capelinhos, the most recent part of the island. It is only 60 years old and walking there seems as to be on the moon. Absolutely stunning.
