• Down into the Rift Valley

    August 4 in Kenya ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Our second day started cold and foggy.
After a generous breakfast by the host (eggs and pancakes), we took off for what would be another day of rough riding.
The route took us through the mountains covered with dense woods and up to two, probably amazing, viewpoints over the rift valley, from which we had zero views due to the dense fog.

Towards the afternoon, the skies began to clear, and we caught our first rays of Kenyan sun! More or less at the same time, we got stranded in front of a dense field, with lots of busy farm workers. Our route was supposed to go right through it 🫠 Things in Kenya change fast, and this would only be one of various reroutes today.

After a short ride along an unpleasently busy main road, we took a turn back into the woods and towards the hill sides. Following the so-called derailleur trail - a very narrow trail through plantations - we descended down into the valley. Not without some confusion, when the trail started to look like it was getting too narrow to pass. But no, that was still the official route.
Poor Tim fought with the narrow trail and lastly kissed the mountain as he took a wrong step down the slope. But bike and cyclist survived in one piece and without injuries.

Down in the valley, the scenery changed from green and lush to brown and arrid.
In the late afternoon, we had our first large-wildlife encounters as we reached the Kedong Ranch, home to a lot of wild animals such as Zebras, Gnus, Giraffes, and Wildebeests

The final kilometres of the day felt very long and tiring. We finally reached Lake Naivasha, where we pitched our tent at Camp Carnelly's right at the lake front, with views of hippos and a delicious dinner in the local restaurant.
